We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Looking at booking Marina Bay Sands in Singapore for a couple of nights in Jan.

Any tips/tricks to bring down the cash price? (I’m so used to using points at most places!)

    • HH says:

I don’t recommend it, when Singapore has so many superlative hotels. I’d suggest going for lunch at Spago on the MBS rooftop and you’ll see the zoo that is the infinity pool on your way in…

    • ATP says:

Don’t bother paying extra for an expensive view. Seriously not worth it. Recommend one night as pool is only attraction and you’ll spend all your time there anyway not the room, but don’t expect to relax there. Rest of the hotel feels like a zoo so spend only a night there and move next door to the MO. Breakfast in the lobby felt like eating at a cafe in a shopping centre.

Yes, we plan lunch there next week, we hope, staying at the W.

    Ryanair flights & lockdown

I’ve booked some (cheap) flights with Ryanair to Vienna. However, there is no point going to Vienna due to lockdown / I am not allowed to travel to Austria for tourism. Is there anything I can do to get the money back etc?

Also, is there any way to insure that this won’t happen in the future? I have some bookings for Jan & Feb with Ryanair and other airlines.

    • Rob says:

      Only via your travel insurance.

If the flight departs, Ryanair has done its bit.

      • T says:

What travel insurance do you recommend? Always thought it was quite difficult in terms of lockdowns. The only one I currently have is the Revolut (premium acc) one

    • Gormlesstraveller says:

      What about going to Bratislava?

      • T says:

They are planning to have a 3-4 week lockdown too apparently. Also, I’ve been there back in September for 2 days and it was more than enough

    • Anna says:

Is Ryanair not allowing changes any more? I changed from mainland Spain to Tenerife back in August when the former was still red or amber (can’t remember which but it affected our travel insurance) at minimal cost.

      • Sandgrounder says:

I think you needed to book before the end of September off the top of my head, although it appears they have reintroduced a very limited policy for bookings between 20 Nov and 4 Dec.
