We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Can I use BA phone line to cancel Avios redemption now?

  • Paul says:

Would anyone expect any issues with receiving a (large) credit balance refund from Creation, beyond them likely taking their leisurely time, after the closure-for-most on 4th Dec?

    • Blenz101 says:

Based on reports on here of how they operate, yes. Almost all credit card providers take serious issue with credit balances, particularly if caused by overpayment so you are going to be on the back foot anyway.

If you have a credit balance now I would start the process of getting it refunded. If you are expecting a refund in the future I would try to get it back to any other card or by cheque.

If they are dealing with several hundred FOS complaints over closure, free nights and points each at £750 a pop you are going to be at the back of the queue on a rapidly sinking ship.

      • Paul says:

What issue can they take, on a ‘soon to be’ closed card, don’t they have a duty to refund, eventually? It’s Creation so I’m expecting some hiccups

        • Blenz101 says:

From memory I think it is something to do with the way they are regulated that prevents them carrying a positive balance. I think maybe as a way to somehow prevent money laundering? Any way could well trigger a KYC check when you ask for a refund. Do you want to be corresponding with them proving source of funds and sending of hard copies of utility bills to get your money?

How confident are you in the FOS won’t prevent them trading when everyone lodges their complaint post 4th Dec? How well capitalised is the UK business, just 2000 complaints is a £1.5m they need to find. What if Martin Lewis covers it, how much would the fine be then?

Yes, you may get your money back eventually, perhaps via a compensation scheme, but what a hassle for a (large) credit balance. Equally, they may just send a cheque in the post but you asked about issues and with Creation there could be plenty.

There are also plenty of reports of them writing off debit balances, I’d much rather chance them zeroing off my outstanding balance than owing me money.

Hello, newbie IHG booking question please. Booked a few nights at Indigo Wireless Bangkok but also want to try out the Kimpton Malai too at Xmas’ eve. For point booking cancellation, how soon the points are refunded back to your account? Cheers, Vit.

I applied for the AMEX Platinum card a few weeks ago and ended up hitting the £6000 spend target much quicker than expected. I now have the 60,000 MR points and have used the £200 dining credit offer. I now have to decide whether to keep the card or get a pro rata refund on the membership fee.

Does anyone have a handy reference on which benefits I retain if I cancel the card? I understand I keep hotel status, lose Priority Pass & insurance. What about lounges where the AMEX card is shown – Plaza Premium, Centurion, Eurostar, Delta? What about Hertz status and the 4 hour grace period? Thanks.

    • TGLoyalty says:

No lounge access to centurion or plaza premium as both swipe your card and it must be active.

    • Anna says:

You keep the hotel statuses until they naturally expire, or sometimes even longer!
My OH got a 50k retention bonus via chat a couple of months ago when we were genuinely intending to cancel …

    • Jim says:

You can continue using the Amex Platinum CDP code after cancelling. However, Hertz may ask for proof so keep the card.

  • Gothbe says:

Anyone know how BA wine shows on Amex? I have an offer from BA wines and a £25 cash back on £100 spend from laithwaites on my bonvoy card. If it processes as laithwaites it could be very attractive

  • Gothbe says:

Any Black Friday offers on EasyJet plus membership?

  • Sal says:

Hi all just some guidance please. I imagine this has been covered time and time again, so apologies. I have a ba companion voucher expiring end of December. How does the refund voucher work. Is the idea to book a 2for1 ticket to say Manchester and then cancel it. How do you then use the 2for1 voucher in the future? And does the second person have to travel in the future on the ticket?
    Many thanks

    • Anna says:

Yes, book cheapest redemption you can find then cancel (same day if you want) for the FTV, valid till September 23.
Same people have to travel, and you have to call BA to redeem the voucher, so it depends if extending the 241 is worth that to you!

    • TGLoyalty says:

You book a 2-4-1 fight for you and your chosen +1 then take a voucher.

You have to book any new redemption over the phone and yes the second persons name is fixed.
