We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Cancelled a hotel on hotels.com yesterday afternoon that had been pre-paid. Money already back on my (cancelled) Amex this morning. Very impressed!

  • Patrick C says:

Has anyone contacted creation already about the IHG points they are yet to provide for last month?

Or are they pretending that those don’t exist?

    • Aston100 says:

      No absolutely no one.
Never gets mentioned in these comments every day.

      • Aston100 says:

Sorry that was a bit harsh.
Yes lots of people have, and there are comments in here practically every day.
Creation aren’t transferring any points and you’ll need to raise a complaint (phone them to do so).

    • Char Char says:

      Yes no response, rude people!

    • Steven says:

I conctaed them yesterday and they insisted that they had and are transferring points and any complaint needs to be raised directly with IHG and not them

    • Neil Spellings says:

Yes, and they said they wouldn’t be due to the account going to be closed by them in December. Complaint raised.

  • BuildBackBetter says:

So if the news of Visa increasing fees from 0.3% to 1.5% is true, that’ll make credit cards more profitable and we can see new cards introduced?
Looks like good timing for Chase!

    • Youllnever says:

Doubtful, since that only applies to cross-border transactions I believe, and most people spend domestically…

      • BuildBackBetter says:

From what I read, it applies to all transactions. Why would amazon uk worry about cross border transactions?

        • Youllnever says:

It would apply to all UK buyers purchasing from Amazon. All of these transactions would be classified as cross-border as I believe Amazon does not have a UK business entity.

        • Rui N. says:

It doesn’t apply to all transactions, only cross-border. In the UK it’s still 0.2% for debit cards, 0.3% for credit.

    • Harrier25 says:

Not very profitable when the largest retailer in the world, Amazon, refuses to accept your cards due to the higher fees!

    • Aston100 says:

Won’t it lead to higher prices though?

      • BuildBackBetter says:

Yes, merchants accepting cards will put prices up by the higher fees.

    • BuildBackBetter says:

I’ll take back my comment then.
I actually think government should push these cross border fees up to 5% to force amazon and Apple to move operations to uk.

      • Andy says:

Is there even a cap on cross border interchange fees at the moment? I suspect they went with 1.5% because that’s what they think they can get away with. In which case there’s nothing for the government to do…

      • Ls says:

I would double VAT on items bought from retailers who are based abroad for tax purposes.

    • Oh! Matron! says:

Amazon to stop accepting Visa credit cards in UK https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-59306200

  • FFoxSake says:

In keeping with the subject of credit cards today… some memories of Access for older HfP-ers…
    https://www.accesscreditcard.info/flexTvAds.aspx

    • Harrier25 says:

      Did Access become MasterCard?

      • FFoxSake says:

according to the PPI info page on that site “In essence, all Access cards issued after 1973 were MasterCard plastics, but in the early days, the UK-centric Access brand had dominance over the MasterCard brand (and its predecessors, the Master Charge or Interbank brands).”

  • Can says:

So, the car insurance is up for renewal. I was with Bell for years, they accept Amex.
Now, they gave me a high quote — punitive for loyalty. I searched alternatives and literally none accepts Amex: S’buryBank, Hastings, Aviva, LV etc..
I’d prefer this on my amex to hit the Amex Acc Biz bonus sooner.
    Any advise?

  • Rh says:

Morning all, I raised a request to have my Iberia account erased on the 01/11 and I had confirmation today that this has been completed. I was worried that the -90,000 might be reflected on my BA Executive account after the changes they are doing at the moment.

    • Jonathan says:

Asking for your account to be erased doesn’t mean they have to delete all your data. They are allowed to store data for accounts where they have a valid reason to (which would include a negative balance).

You may well no longer have an active Iberia Plus account for earnings but still find they have a full record of the -90k & your name, d.o.b., address, passport number etc.

      • Yorkieflyer says:

I’d love it if these chickens came home to roost. We used our 90k legitimately in IB

  • trader363 says:

Mr_Jetlag, kindly replied to my post a couple of days ago saying there is only 1 VTL per day on BA.

I was of the understanding that all BA flights are VTL? News outlets claimed all of them are VTL flights, but nothing on BA’s website to confirm nor deny.

    • BuildBackBetter says:

Don’t go by news articles. I believe airlines can choose to designate some flights as VTL depending upon demand. They could choose to convert all flights to VTL if there’s demand for other flights.

    • Sam G says:

The VTL currently only runs up to end-March, there is only one BA flight – the BA11/12 which is always VTL. What happens for summer and beyond is still provisional currently – depends on Sydney I imagine. But since you need to be vaccinated to travel there I suspect all BA flights would continue to operate as VTL until such a designation isn’t required.

      Other airlines operate a mixture

    • trader363 says:

      Thanks all!

  • Sam says:

If I cancel my BA Amex today, do the Avios earnt transfer at the end of the month as normal?

    • AJA says:

I don’t think so. Best to stop using the card and cancel after Avios have transferred. Weigh up value of Avios vs 1 month extra fee.
