We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • Geoff Foster says:

How do I transfer my Flying Blue miles to ALLAccor points? I know it is not very good value but better than losing them

  • Mco says:

In regards to the Platinum offer on One Fine stay. Some properties price up for a one night stay so can I book a night and the other half book a night with her add on platinum card? Would both cards get the cash back? Or say if you book 3+3 on both cards would you get 2 sets CB?

    • Anna says:

Do you mean your OH has a supp card on your account and you both have the offer? If so then this would absolutely work but depending on the hotel/property they will usually split the final bill over two cards anyway if you tell them you want to do that. I don’t know how OFS works but it’s worth asking.

    • Ollie says:

Out of interest, what properties have you found that allow you to book a 1 night minimum stay?
Pre-COVID, I think I worked out that the only ones were in Bali, at £180/night, so in theory you could stay for free if you hopped between these every night! (cos of course Amex refunds up to £200 per booking)

      • Polly says:

Yes, we booked 6 nights that way, as had the offer on our gold cards and supps also

  • Ja says:

    I need help

Flying to Toronto tomorrow. I have done ArriveCAN and Verifly. When I try to check in BA comes up with I’m not authorised. Can anyone help please.

    Thanks

    • James says:

I flew there last week with air France and it said something similar but that documents needed checking at the airport. All was ok though as long as you’ve done everything required

      • Ja says:

        Thanks James

I think I have done everything. I’ll just turn up at checkin a bit earlier

    • Jen T says:

Strange – for us, we did everything and could check in online. You might just be unlucky.

      • James says:

I thought it was odd when I got the same message as well and wouldn’t allow online check-in but they did it straight away once the documents got checked at the airport!

    • Iain says:

Hi my son just travelled to Canada and could Not Check in on line ,as per other comments the documents were all checked quickly and easily at the airport .

  • Boi says:

I left it til late…. I need to spend 3K on my gold by today. Of the fully refundable things which one can I book which can be charged immediately?

    • Mick S says:

I doubt anything will work, because the transaction will be “pending” for a day at least.

    • Peter K says:

Not refundable, but gift cards for the supermarket you normally use.

If your have the Morrisons offer, you can lock in 10% off gift cards for other retailers.

      • Anna says:

Do they have Morrisons in Canada?!
Presumably it’s several hours earlier there so a transaction might go through in a business day?

        • Boi says:

Gift cards won’t work for reasons by Anna🤣
I thought even if it is pending for a day or 2 it will still show transaction date as 16th?

    • SteveJ says:

Doesn’t have to clear today surely, but needs to be processed today.

      • Boi says:

Yes, that’s exactly my question. What can I do that is likely to be processed today (no guarantees)?

        • Tom says:

Anything online that will ship today. Amazon would be a good shout. As long as they charge your card today you will be fine.

        • Leo says:

Gift cards – supermarket (Sainsburys gift card – get the digital version so you can load it on your phone and use in store)/Amazon/Deliveroo/Uber gift cards. They will be recorded as processed today which is the key thing. Amex will count these towards your 3k spend, even though the transactions will be pending and clear a few days later.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Unless you plan on immediately cancelling the card you’ll lose the points as soon as it’s refunded. So ensure it’s something you can actually use.

£3k Amazon might be too much even if you can cash out via other means.

  • Anuj says:

Hyatt place east through amex travel and the £50 off £200 spend is the cheapest I could fine.

  • Anuj says:

I don’t really follow BA prices in business class. What’s a good price for Business class to Delhi? Does it ever go as low as £1200 ish? Currently £1700

    • Anuj says:

Additionally is it possible to book business one way and then a low cabin on your return with cash flights? I know you can do that using avios.

    • Aston100 says:

I find Google Flights is a useful starting point.
You’ll see a message suggesting whether the current price is high or low.
As an example, if I select a random week in Feb 22, it gives me some prices with BA / Virgin and Air India (in the £1900 – £2000 range) with a message that this is currently high and that “The least expensive flights for similar trips to New Delhi usually cost between £1,300–1,800”

  • Ikaz says:

I have an IHG Ambassador free night voucher for up to 40k points, does anyone know if I can already use this + points for a stay (hotel is 43k points)?
Voucher is currently attached to a different booking for a hotel that is now sold-out, so don’t want to risk loosing that stay if new booking doesn’t work out

    • Phil W says:

There is no automated way to do this AFAIK. The IHG website did appear to suggest this was possible a few months back when I was searching for somewhere to use mine but once you got through to the room selection page, it only offered cash rates.

Potentially, you could email a hotel and ask them if it is possible directly. They may be willing to fudge it to make it work.

  • SteveJ says:

Creation statement has dropped, xxx “points earned this month” (their words). 0 “points transferred”.

Cue query to customer services to ask why no points have been transferred. Followed by a complaint following their inevitable reply.

    • Jonathan says:

I’m wondering if they’re trying to use this as a negotiation tactic. Give you absolutely nothing & hope you then accept earned points as a halfway house for the voucher/fee refund. They cannot genuinely believe they have a leg to stand on over earned points though.
