We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • TGLoyalty says:

33% off is still a very good deal

  • Leigh says:

The perksatwork site looks like an US site. Is this the right place to sign up PAW?

    • TGLoyalty says:

If your workplace has access to PAW then surely they provided a link?

      • Leigh says:

Daughter works for NHS and would like to to sign up PAW, but she’s not aware of any link. Will ask her to check. Thanks.

        • StevieKicks says:

Google ‘perksatwork nhs’ and click the first result, shows a sign up page that’s accessible to all NHS staff.

“As a THANK YOU for your hard work and efforts during this crisis, we’re opening up access to Perks at Work to all NHS Workers.”

          • Anna T says:

I joined PAW using my NHS email previously but don’t seem to get the amazing deals mentioned on HFP comments. Should I have joined using that link you mention? Thanks very much

          • Leigh says:

Many thanks. That worked a treat!

          • Lady London says:

I’ve joined PAW as a small employer and it’s full of noise – untargeted offers that aren’t worth even looking at.

All I can say is you probably have to be a large corporate to be let in on anything worth having.

Other schemes mentioned on here have turned up nuggets but this one nevee will for me.

Speaking of nuggets, did you guys see the 3x earning avios offer on Iberia? 3x basic avios (no cabin uplift, just triple on the basic avios) for Iberia flight booked by 21st November for any date of travel, book website/phone or any non-OTA travel agent.

I called AMEX today to request my 2 MR accounts to be merged.
It turns out that my basic MR card is under the name of Mr Brit Bronco and my Plat card is under the name Brit Middlename Bronco. The agent told me I couldn’t merge accounts unless I fill out a change of name form. This seems very petty considering the address is the same. Also I haven’t changed my name, so I can’t upload proof of changing my name.
Does this really need to be done or HUACA?

    • AJA says:

Why not change the MR account with the name Mr Brit Bronco to Brit Middlename Bronco? Send a copy of your passport showing full name as evidence (assuming your passport has your middle name and matches the 2nd MR account).

      • Harrier25 says:

I managed to merge my Preferred Rewards Gold & Green card into one account myself with slightly different verifications of my name without bothering Amex customer services. Sure you can too.

        • Britbronco says:

Can you give any more guidance on how to do this without Amex customer services??

  • Craig says:

    Monese are at it again:

    – £50 gift card for £40: code SHOP50
    – £100 gift card for £80: code SHOP100
    – £200 gift card for £160: code SHOP200
    – £400 gift card for £320: code SHOP400

    • Doug M says:

      Love these, money for nothing.

      • Alex says:

Do they have John Lewis gift cards?

      • AJA says:

Complete Monese novice here – don’t have an account. Am I reading this correctly, you pay £40 out of your Monese account and get a £50 giftcard by using the code?

        • Aston100 says:

          Pretty much.
Can’t recall how long it takes for the account to be setup, so there is a chance these promo codes will have been all taken (think there is usually a finite number).

    • Aston100 says:

      Thanks!
Now, if only Amazon redemptions would return soon.
Might have to continue buying Sabos GCs.

    • SteveJ says:

Never tried Monese, can you top up with Amex/MC/Visa Credit, or only debit / bank transfer?

    • TGLoyalty says:

      Great. Money for nothing!

      • Sundar says:

It isnt for nothing though, you lose the Amex points in lieu where usable ?
Agreed the offer is good though…

        • Aston100 says:

          Sundar.
I just purchased headphones for £159.
I saved £30 cash just now using £150 John Lewis gift cards purchased for £120 through Monese.
I also gained 9 MR by paying the balance(£9) with my Amex Platinum.
This is significantly better than the 159 MR / 239 Avios / 318 Nectar I might have gained had I used an Amex for the entirety of the purchase.

Wouldn’t you agree that £30 cash is better than than around £2 worth of Amex points?

          • John says:

The point was that you’re gaining £30 by losing £2, not gaining £30 for nothing.

        • TGLoyalty says:

No because I topped up with Che and I potentially got 2 IHG and definitely got 1 virgin point anyway.

      • Aston100 says:

        And your chicks for free?

        • Sundar says:

Yep, what John said. I am all for having the 30£ cash outlay benefit upfront but it is not for nothing is the point.

    • Reney says:

I closed my monese account maybe I need to reopen it.

    • Grant says:

SHOP400 now sold out. Others still available at 8pm

    • Paul says:

      brilliant, thanks

    • Matty says:

I’m trying to install Monese but the app is requesting access to my microphone. It won’t let me proceed unless I grant access.

      • Anuj says:

Yes because you have to film yourself saying some random digits to prove your identity, you can always deny microphone access after opening your account.

    • Andy says:

That’s a ~£50k marketing exercise gone in the span of a couple of hours…wonder whether they’ll get much recurring business out of it to justify the outlay

      • Aston100 says:

Well my balance is back down to 50p again as it has been all year, in between top-ups to purchase gift cards via promo codes.

        • Andy says:

Same here, but I won’t complain when it gets me a new iPhone from JL at US prices!

  • Allan says:

Any news on the expiring M&M miles? Did that 1 mile we all got last month for mileage protection mean anything?

  • Aston100 says:

A good use for the Monese gift cards is the Sony WH-1000XM3 headphones for £159 at John Lewis. Excellent noise cancellation and seem to be very popular (alongside the Bose qc35 ii).
An excellent price as it is, but effectively £129 when using Joh Lewis GCs via Monese promo codes.
Not sure if any funds return sites would stack as you’re using (mostly) gift cards?

*disclaimer, not tried yet myself as I don’t need those headphones.

  • Leigh says:

For anyone struggling with the AccorFlying Blue linking and any other promo registration, it’s possibly due to your Accor account being (soft) suspended. You’ll have to call and send an identify document to verify – promo registrations and linking are now working

  • Aston100 says:

Hmm, still got £800 of Monese gift card credit left.
Might have overdone it a bit.

    • Craig says:

Thought I was bad with £550!

    • Peter says:

Keep in mind that they expire in 90 days. Exchange to Asda/Morrisons and swap for Amazon gift cards with 10 years expiry date.

      • Paul says:

^ this. Bag a morrisons gift card and you’re good for 24 months – can delay your decision
