Vueling to charge for bringing larger cabin bags and cuts Avios earn rate

Vueling is IAG’s low cost carrier, operating primarily from a base in Barcelona. It flies a number of routes to and from the UK from regional airports.

You can earn and redeem Avios on Vueling flights as we explain in this article. It is a similar structure to Aer Lingus flights – you can either:

  • book at vueling.com and get a fixed value per Avios to discount your flight (you can pay 100% of the cost if you wish) or
  • you can book via iberia.com and redeem via the standard Avios reward charts
Vueling to charge for bringing larger cabin bags and cuts Avios earn rate

Vueling announced two changes this week to its cheapest ‘Basic’ fares.

The first change is to do with Avios. The rate you earn is cut from 3 Avios per €1 to 2 Avios per €1. Optima, Family and TimeFlex fares will continue to earn 4 Avios per €1 spent.

The second change is baggage related.

If you buy a Basic fare, you can no longer bring a larger price of hand baggage into the cabin for free.

Basic fares will come with an allowance for one piece of underseat baggage which must be no larger than 40cm x 30cm x 20cm.

Interestingly, you can check in a larger piece of hand baggage (max 55cm x 40cm x 20cm and under 10kg in weight) for free.

If you want to bring a larger bag into the cabin on a Basic fare, you will to need to pay extra or book a Space One or Space Plus seat. A larger cabin bag will continue to be included automatically with other fare classes.

This policy is being applied retrospectively so anyone who is holding a Vueling Basic ticket will now need to check it in to avoid an extra charge.

Full details can be found on the Vueling hand baggage page here.

‘piece’ not ‘price’ in the Vueling section.

  • marcw says:

I don’t think you understand the new hand luggage policy for Vueling basic fares (for flights booked from Nov 23rd).

  • Speedbird676 says:

Hasn’t that always been the case with the Vueling Basic fare? I flew to Bilbao with them in August on a Basic fare and could take my backpack on board but had to check in my carry-on although it was included in the price.

    • marcw says:

Exactly. For flights booked from 23rd November, only the small hand bag) backpavk is included in basic fares. For a larger bag, you must pay (not included anymore)

    • Rob says:

No, this is new, as their website says.

      • marcw says:

        No,

            Important notice
On 23 November 2021, we will be adapting our Basic Fare for passengers who want to travel light and get the lowest fare possible. The fare will only include an underseat bag, which means that you can choose to add another piece of hand luggage on board or checked bags, only if you need to.

Only for bookings made from the 23 Nov.

For booking made before that (Basic fare), you can bring underseat bag + your “hand luggage” must be checked in (for free). Form the 23Nov your free checked in hand luggage is not complimentary anymore. Only the underseat bag will be included in Basic fares. For anything else, you need to pay.

  • Susan says:

Not sure it is retrospective. I have flights booked for 26th and they sent an email to say that the changes will not apply to that booking.

    • Mikeact says:

I thought it was pretty clear, as I mentioned a few days back.
@marcw has spelt it out clearly, again.

    • Jan M says:

My OH flew Vueling last week and had to check in his cabin bag free of charge. It certainly isn’t new. So if there is a change it must be that that service is no longer free.

    • kris says:

the new tariff comes into force from 23:00 and applies only to new bookings, they cannot change or prohibit you to bring your baggage if you bought a ticket when it was still included in the ticket price

  • Elguiri says:

Nectar Ts&Cs state “12x bonus points will be awarded on only the first eligible item that meets the minimum spend”
