We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I’ve seem a few comments recently that Bendy backed by Beardy to Ernie isn’t working, is this the case for all or only some?

    • Paul says:

….and do we even need to use the code words anymore? Apologies if it’s annoying. Ps. Gentle Paul. NOT Paul the Destroyer

      • TGLoyalty says:

Right because it’s not the endless people not using the code that caused the issue …

        • SteveJ says:

MI5 have been aware all along. They cracked the code and created a top secret task force to get to the bottom of it.

          • TGLoyalty says:

Interpol was given the name of the cancelled 2000 before the letters landed on doorsteps.

          • Paul says:

Hahaha fair enough! What is the situation though currently with Virgin to NS&I via Curve? Dead or only dead for some?

          • TGLoyalty says:

Personally the curve + NS&I route is dead for me.

There’s more than one way to skin a cat too.

    • Ashish says:

Waht abouy paying Amex, need metal?

  • Phil says:

Worth noting that making Marriott redemption bookings for after March next year (when dynamic pricing is introduced) DOES NOT lock in pricing if you don’t have sufficient points to cover the redemption fully.

“The points rate for your reservation may increase or decrease until you have deducted the points from your account to cover the reservation.”

    • Paul says:

To be fair I assumed that would be the case, and is pretty much the case now up to a period / limit

      • Phil says:

        Agreed, it’s not unreasonable.

AND I’ve just had another look at dates and same redemption has now gone up from 280k points to 560k points!!!!!

        • Paul says:

Really, where is that for? I thought the current category peak cap still remains through to the end of ‘22?

    • TGLoyalty says:

Points advance bookings stopped locking in rates over a year ago. You can only have a max of 3 points advance booked too I believe.

Re doubling in rate I suspect it’s now a premium room booking.

      • Phil says:

I can confirm that the issue in this case lays between the keyboard and the monitor…

I selected two rooms instead of selecting two people in a room…

        Idiot that I am.

New platinum winter events released – for any Harry potter fans there is a unique christmas experience at £250 a head but also a great family experience at the National Theatre for Sleeping Beauty at £86 AN ADULT/£43 UNDER 18 YRS.

  • Phil W says:

IHG Promo Query – Is the start date (1st Oct) based on Check-In or Check-Out date. I know the end of the promotion is usually always Check-Out. The reason for my query is this:
    (1) Stayed 29-Sep – 1-Oct Holiday Inn Salzburg
    (2) Staying 18-Nov – 21-Nov IC Estoril

If the Holiday Inn Salzburg stay counts as #1 in the promo, then it will be worth my while doing a mattress run to trigger triple points on the IC Estoril stay. If it doesn’t, it isn’t!

    TIA

  • Pete M says:

We don’t talk about the theatre on here often, but there’s a 24hr sale for Magic Goes Wrong on TodayTix, with £25pp tickets in the stalls (https://www.todaytix.com/london/shows/16088-magic-goes-wrong). With Christmas coming up you may find taking the whole extended family to see a silly play in January a better option than buying them pointless gifts or vouchers!

    • stevenhp1987 says:

Shame I’ve seen it already, such a good price!

      • Jane says:

I noticed this the other day on in Bath.. is it any good and is it child friendly ?

        • The Savage Squirrel says:

My 11yo thought that both Magic and Play that go wrong were hilarious; crying with laughter. 8yo enjoyed them but not as much. I’d say 8 is about the lower age limit as there’s some deliberately hammed up gore and creepiness but young children won’t get the irony – or indeed the whole show within a show concept.
People I know keep wanting to go so I’ve actually seen Play That Goes Wrong three times now without planning to do so; it stands up pretty well on repeat viewings to be fair; even on the 3rd go I wasn’t bored.

    • Graham Walsh says:

Thanks Pete. Just booked for Jan. My kids 8 and 10 loved the Play that goes wrong and we’ve been looking for tickets for this. Top find.

  • Simon says:

Replacing luggage – always been a soft sided case man, but seriously considering going hard-sided. Concerned the extra empty weight (5KG v 2KG ?) negates any perceived benefits though…. Which is only really an issue if not travelling biz… Any views either way?

    • KP says:

Hard cases for hang lugagge. Soft for check in.

There was a long discussion on this tooic on the article re. Rimowa amex offer.

  • Can says:

Slightly off-topic, so apologies. Moving house from London to London. It is about 15min driving distance only. And I need movers, preferrably those who also pack. Any recommendations?

    • Rob says:

We moved 2 minutes down the road, didn’t save anything on the moving cost! We used Anthony Ward Thomas twice and had no issues – they packed everything inc disassembling beds etc and then put it all back together. Obviously not cheap and perhaps better suited to full house / 3+ bed apartments.

We’ve also used Gentleman And A Van before with no issues.

    • Sam G says:

I used “Aussie” man with van / removals before to move our London office next door – no van required! – few years ago now but did a good job and competitive price

    • Phil says:

Whatever you do, don’t be tempted to do it yourself. We moved 5 minutes walk down the street and it nearly killed us moving stuff ourselves – even with the 10 friends that turned up to help.

I had a couple of week gap between properties when I moved and used https://www.kellystorage.co.uk – they drive to you with a large storage crate; will optionally pack it for you (highly recommended); and will do the reverse when you’re ready for them.

We were quoted £3.5k by a “normal” moving firm. Kelly’s did it all for around £600.

      • John says:

I’ve moved by myself many times, using a black cab, Zipcar then my own car.

The storage unit is a good idea even if there is no time gap, I might use them next time.

    • Can says:

Thank you all, I’ll give them all a call.

    • Igloo says:

We’ve used a company called Light Rock removals a number of times and they have been great. https://www.lightrockremovals.co.uk/

  • Kai says:

Just got a platinum after a gap of 2 years. I wanted to change the payment due date to suit my pay day but I was surprised to find out from the Amex agent that the period to pay back on Platinum is just 14 days apparently becuase it is a charge card, but the period for credit cards is 28 days. This wasn’t the case if I recall correctly when I took a 2 years break. Is it a new change?

    • Can says:

I’ve got mine 3 years ago, and it was like that 14day or so pay back period as it is a charge card.

    • A says:

Officially, yes it is 14 days, and beyond that you will get an email that your payment is overdue. Card is never suspended or blocked.

Unofficially (and certain agents at Brighton will happily confirm this to you) it has to be paid by the next statement date. I still do this on my platinum – statement is the 8th, I pay it on the 7th, usually nearer midnight. If it isn’t paid by the 8th, thats when you start to get the red message on the app that it is overdue and must be paid immediately.

      • Can says:

        and no interest charged?

        • A says:

No interest (because charge card), no late penalties, and no ding to credit score. I have never- and i mean genuinely, not once – paid it by the earlier ‘soft’ date shown on the statement.

    • Peter K says:

Always been shorter pay by date on charge card in my experience.
