We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Aviation is always used as a gold-standard for safety in my industry, but I’ve got to say sometimes one wonders… Was reading the below report from the Office of the Inspector General at the US Department of Transportation on AA and their oversight by the FAA and some of it really isn’t ideal…

“American flew an aircraft with an inoperable emergency evacuation slide for 877 days before reporting the non-compliance to FAA.”

“The team found multiple issues with maintenance manuals and training, but the team also identified a pattern of improper risk categorization, risk control ineffectiveness, and missing hazard identification documentation.”

    • Anna says:

I kind of wish I hadn’t read that now, but it surprises me with the USA being such a litigious nation!

    • Paul Pogba says:

I’ve been watching Air Crash Investigation on Disney and the number of faulty instruments that are reported by flight crew and “maintained” by taking out and blowing on it or switching it on and off is fairly alarming.

      • AL says:

I flew a BA domestic flight a few months ago with duct tape applied to a flap as a quick fix.

You’d be surprised how much critical national infrastructure is resolved by turning it off and on again, blowing on it or taking it out, turning it around and putting it back in again!

        • Rui N. says:

That’s not duct tape. It’s called speed tape, and it’s a pretty common and effective way to do minor repairs.

          • AL says:

I’d have no issue with speed tape – I use it day in, day out. As you say, super efficient and works wonders to get a frame back in the air. This was duct tape to hold down flaking safety livery at the end of a repair as a quick fix – the speed tape was, and is, a different colour.

    • Travel Strong says:

There’s the aviation industry, and then there is America.
USA safety culture undermines the standards across many industries.

May have been covered but can’t find – transfer Avios to Nectar. Email states could take up to 10 days. Real world how long should I expect?

Slightly annoyed as the Avios is debited immediately so why Nectar balance can’t be updated similarly I don’t know!!

    • John says:

Anti fraud measure, should take 10 days

      • Mr(s) Entitled says:

I did two transfers towards the end of October. One took 12 days, the other 11 days. Note, not business days. Actual days.

    • Chris says:

Does anyone know if the Exec Club IT fixes will impede these transfers? Should I wait until Exec Club comes back online before initiating a transfer?

  • David says:

I have been on courses where ex airline pilots have talked about using the aviation way of thinking to avoid never incidents in dentistry – actually really useful – sorry bit off topic!

    • Anna says:

      Duct tape? 🤣

    • Jonathan says:

Google Elaine Bromiley. Her husband is an airline pilot & a frequent guest at medical conferences where he lectures on human factors in the airline industry vs healthcare. Fortunately there is now much better awareness of these issues in the medical world in no small part due to Martin’s determination to create some positive legacy from a tragic situation.

  • Mart says:

We have a Qatar flight Manchester to Doha to maldives in a few weeks.
Maldives require a test 96hrs before but do Qatar airways require a test to board at 72hrs or are they just looking at the requirements of the destination? Also can anyone recommend a fit to fly PCR test company we live over 2 hrs from nearest airport – Newcastle, so postal would be better ?

    • Anna says:

Won’t you be driving down to MAN the day before anyway? You could book a test there if so.

      • Mart says:

We will but if test positive we would have more options to rearrange with 3-4 days notice before than 1

        • Anna says:

If you are doing LFTs in the week running up to your PCR test and isolating as much as possible (the new normal before a holiday 😬), you should be fine.

  • Danny says:

Is there any way to use Avios (or any other Amex MR transfer) for American Airlines flights between US and Caribbean? They don’t seem to show on ba.com and I can’t see how to get the points into AAdvantage. Thankyou

    • blenz101 says:

You can’t get the points in to AAdvantage. Quite possible no seats are available on the dates you are looking at. You need the lowest saver rates to be available.

Alaska flights could be another option, no sure if these are bookable online yet. When I used them a few years ago you had to call to book.

      • QFFlyer says:

You can get MR into AAdvantage, you just have to go via Marriott Rewards first.

  • Danny says:

Scratch that. It is doable on ba.com, there were just no seats available

  • Chris says:

Amex Plat dining offer – it’s 6 days since my transaction and no sign of statement credit. Is this normal or too long?
It’s certainly longer than I’ve had for previous Amex offers.

  • Ben says:

Looking to book the IC Edinburgh for extended family trip in mid-December for 3 nights. I’d need 2x double rooms and 1x twin, plus a single occupancy, interconnecting room for my 12 year old.

Any tips for getting a good deal on the single occupancy room or am I dreaming?

I’m fine with rates on other rooms. IHG reservations no help.

    Thanks in advance

    • TGLoyalty says:

Did you contact the hotel directly ?

Mention the number of rooms you need and see what they can do as a group booking? Perhaps they’ll throw in other perks rather than money off.

    • Chrism20 says:

May be one Emyr can help with if it’s a cash stay and would probably get you a few other perks of he can help.

      • Rob says:

This is very much the sort of thing where you should involve Emyr because he will talk to the hotel before you book to confirm it can be done, and then call them again on the day of arrival to ensure that it is happening.
