We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Hi all, is the Amex Travel offer (Spend 200 get 50 off) cumulative or applicable to a one off spend only?

  • AFKAE says:

Flew out to the Maldives at the weekend CW with BA. Initially at bag drop we were offered upgrade to F for £379 each, seemed reasonable so agreed. When he phoned through there was only one seat left-momentarily contemplated taking it and leaving Mrs in CW 😉
CW was new club suites, so maybe didn’t miss much. Took the tip from here to go to the B gates lounge which was very peaceful and had serve yourself champagne. Departure was from C gate so it all worked quite well.
Paying for week 1 has triggered spend £5k get 10 k avios on Amex-I wad part way there already!

    • Anna says:

Have a fabulous time – was it actual champagne in the BA lounge again?!

      • AFKAE says:

        Yes, the real thing!
I should have mentioned it was a 2-4-1 ( or the remains of a half used 2-4-1 to EZE 18 months ago!).

    • John says:

The 10000 avios only just about negates the foreign transaction fees though

    • Benilyn says:

Nice, where are you staying? And does Maldives accept self administered PCR?

      • Lee says:

Would like to ask same question. Booked W again for Christmas, anyone had experience for Christmas gala meal?

      • AFKAE says:

Fushifaru for week 1 and Oblu Select for week 2. I’m not sure on the PCR, I live about 15 mins from BHX so went to the drive through there.

  • BJ says:

How did you do it Sprout? I had same issues a coupke of weeks ago but forgot it until seeing your comment.

    • Sprout says:

I clicked on the wallet icon (top right) and selected curve cash. I was then able to remove my last remaining card.

      • BJ says:

Thanks, I had tried that but it wouldn’t let me select curve cash as I currently have none. I think I’ll just mail them to close the account.

      • Sprout says:

OK, it let me do it via the top right icon but not from the bottom left. I do have a couple of £ in curve cash though, which as you say, may be the difference?

  • Tazzy says:

I’ve recently got the personal platinum card. Going to add my husband for a supplementary. Do I get MR points for doing this? Thanks!

  • Paul Pogba says:

Thanks to Metty for pointing out the awesome speedbird.online site late yesterday! So much interesting data in one place – best value redemptions, cheapest business fares, cheapest tier point fares.

    • Metty says:

I have a fondness for those who are clever enough to come up with sites like this, credit to username LCY8737 on flyertalk for humbly pointing us at it.

    • Barraclough says:

      +1

    • YC says:

Thanks for the site – super useful and have bookmarked!

      • Sprout says:

        Same here – thanks.
Not sure how I haven’t come across it before! Anyone know how up to date it is kept – or does it automatically “pull in live prices”. (IT speak is not a strong point of mine :-))

        • Metty says:

There’s a post by LCY8737 over at flyertalk a year ago saying that the fare data is updated every 3 days.

NYC Hotel room rates – have they gone up?

Hi eveyrone – I was dying to plan a week at my favorite NYC hotel (Chatwal) in January for our anniversary celebration. Used to go there almost every year, but I find that room rates at the hotel have spike 75% compared to what I used to pay

Anyone else noticed if NYC hotel room rates have gone up at places they usually stay at?

I had gotten the sense from browsing that they had actually gone DOWN but I’d be curious to know what other people feel

    • Luke says:

I would guess that with travel now being permitted from Europe again New York will be awash with tourists thereby pushing up rates.

    • Andrew says:

There’s an article on the BBC site this morning detailing how US hotels are having significant challenges obtaining supplies of paperwear (toilet tissue), shampoos, shower gels. Pushing prices up, not forgetting a good number of hotels are still shuttered.

      https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-59140960

It’s bound to be down to Brexit. But maybe bring your own emergency Andrex and toiletries in your luggage.

    • YC says:

Worth checking out the option of buying marriott points (45% bonus currently) and take into account the 5th night free

    • Blair says:

Hotel prices have stayed down Nov/Dec as for many ppl, they can’t/won’t travel long haul from Europe at short notice. And they also believe the hype of airline ‘sales’ to the US so will have waited for a ‘sale’ fare Jan onwards. I’ve never seen Christmas prices so low for so many decent hotels so will be making my way there. That does mean braving MAN security though.

    • Mike says:

I’m looking at Jan too, seems a big price difference between the cheaper range of hotels and the expensive ones now. More also have the resort fee. May settle for Innside and use my discount voucher from status from Amex Plat card.

  • Richie says:

BTW BA A380 G-XLEF has just landed in Frankfurt operating BA902

  • Phil W says:

Couple of quick Hilton Honors queries,

    (1) Several years ago I did the Hilton Diamond Challenge matching from Accor Platinum. Is it possible to do this again matching from IHG Spire?

    (2) Is easy to pool Hilton Honors points from a spouse’s account?

    • John says:

      No, yes.

Caveat to 1, try with different personal details

      • Phil W says:

Thanks John. My home address has subsequently changed. So might change my email address on the account and see what happens.
