We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Just a heads up for anybody interested.
Fri Nov 12. BBC .11.55pm. That Clooney film, ‘Up in the air’, guy trying to rack up 10million miles, but of course, love gets in the way.
Worth a watch with a couple of G&T’s to hand.

    • John says:

Very underrated movie, covering economics/downsizing, and love/lust in middle age (and at Anna Kendrick’s age) as well as frequent flying. Great way to spend a couple of hours.

  • Kevin says:

Got Shangri-La points expired end of the year. Would that possible to convert them to vouchers to be used at restaurant/bar at a later date eg. 2022? Or to be used in Asia if managed to get in during Dec.

  • Nick says:

Does the Amex travel additional MR offer apply to both Gold and Plat, or just Gold (like the airline bonus?)

  • John says:

I’ve got a re-re-rebooked cruise with P&O Cruises next year and they ask for the following before boarding (failure to do so voids the holiday with no refunds – so pretty keen to sort this one out!):

“ Your policy must include medical cover of £2 million minimum that includes cover for emergency evacuations and medical expenses related to COVID-19. You must also ensure your policy includes cover for repatriation, cancellation and curtailment and full cover for any and all pre-existing medical conditions worldwide, or as a minimum, in the countries you are due to visit. ”

And, “ Standard travel insurance is generally meant for a land-based holiday and as such, won’t cover many of the elements of a cruise holiday. A cruise holiday requires more specialist cover, for example if there was a need to be medically evacuated at sea”

Anyone know if Platinum Amex travel insurance covers this? I’ve not long had the card, does anyone know what they’re like in answering specific cover questions like this?

    • Anna says:

I think it’s underwritten by AXA, you need to call them and ask anyway!

    • Reney says:

I think it does, however none of the documentation says the word cruise. When I went in the summer, I was worried that someone would not accept the insurance documentation so I ended up buying separate insurance just in case.

  • Tom says:

Creation have blocked my card for fraud AGAIN after a small order with a craft brewery even after entering my SMS confirmation correctly. The transaction was under £100.
I can’t unblock it without ringing them due to their IT systems from the 1990s.
Debating if I can be bothered or if I just wash my hands of the card and the totally inept company…..

    • Anna says:

Well don’t commit fraud then (or don’t write ambiguous posts, 😂)
Depends how much rinsing you had planned for the next 4 weeks I suppose.

  • Bobri says:

Does anyone have Natwest Premier? How strict are they about having the salary paid into that account vs. just transferring it from another bank?

  • BP says:

Marhaba Family arrival service Dubai. Is it recommended when arriving at 00:45 with a 2 year old? Price is £78 for all of us.

    • Tarmohamed says:

I’ve always found that Dubai arrivals / immigration is always empty… most people are actually on connecting flights. There are porters at baggage claim who are cheap.

    • MisterE says:

I think that’s good value and well worth it for a family and 2 year old, especially if you will be tired after travelling and aren’t very familiar with DXB

    • John says:

It’s only 2045 UK time – and Dubai is a 24 hour airport. Depends on your child’s sleep patterns I guess.

If you’d use it during the day then go for it

  • Mco says:

I got BA revenue tickets that had some AA flight cancellations. Being told by BA that since this is a mixed ticket between AA and BA they can only offer free changes 2 days before or 14 days later. She double checked with her manager.

This is incorrect right? I want to fly in December for March tickets.

    • Jonathan says:

What’s the exact itinerary & which flights are cancelled? EU261 won’t apply for internal AA flights on the return leg as operating carrier of cancelled flight (AA) not an EU/U.K. airline and route is to EU/U.K.

    • Sam G says:

      Is correct -3/+14
AA themselves would be even less generous

      • meta says:

Do you mean MIA-PHL or PHL-LHR? Makes a difference really.

        • Mco says:

Both. MIA-PHL cancelled and rebooked 3hrs later. PHL-LHR cancelled from BA metal and moved to AA 45 mins later so new flight numbers on both flights.

          • meta says:

I’m afraid no EU261 will apply. You have no right whatsoever. The time changes are not that much. 3hrs is nothing. If it was longer than you might be able to get somewhere.

          • meta says:

Sorry I mean no right in respect of EC261. I mean you can ask for refund or ask to be put on a BA flight rather than AA for PHL-LHR and then get duty of care post-flight.

          • Mco says:

I would have though the cancelled flight on PHL-LHR would mean EC261 kicks in?

          • meta says:

@Mco you could try arguing extra-territoriality as per EU case law, but it’s really not tested for non-EU to EU/UK with mixed carriers. Only EU to non-EU. You would have to go to MCOL and it can go both ways there. You really need to have a really good reason why you wouldn’t be able to travel at that time. It’s not like the flights are next day or two days later, it’s only 3-4 hours delay or slightly longer.

You can get EU compo though if final delay is longer than 3hrs because originally your operating carrier was BA. So you need to fly to claim that. Though not officially announced by EU authorities, it seems a growing cases proved that the pandemic excuse no longer applies, so the onus is on the airline to prove that the cancellation was for covid reasons.
