We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Just cancelled 3 First tickets to Dubai on 27th Dec if anyone want to grab them

  • BLT says:

Anyone had any problems using the old tesco debit card (account closing end of this month) with vanguard? Works with HL but wont process with vanguard. Any ideas?

    • Nigel W says:

Interesting to hear this. Had planned on doing a deposit over the weekend to VG via Tesco

    • BLT says:

Well after trying numerous times, it seems to work today using chrome browser!

  • Luke says:

What’s the best BA number to make a booking using a companion voucher? The flights I want to book are available from London, but when I try to book from Edinburgh only the return shows up

    • ChrisC says:

If you have status use that number – available when logged into your account.

Otherwise it’s persist with the the general avios one.

    • Colin MacKinnon says:

Try booking with a Yes to the stopover question, and then just choose the flights you want. That sometimes fixes it.

  • Idrive says:

Hi! I am trying to price an Etihad flight, is there still a 10% discount for Amex(Plat)?
Old articles i found did not lead to discounts on Etihad website. Any ideas?

  • Liz says:

One of our 241’s is due to expire on 3rd Dec. I am a bit late in booking a cheap one way flight to try to extend this through to Sept 2023. If I book today for a flight in Nov can I just cancel it online after the 24 hr cooling off period and request a FTV? Thanks

    • Liz says:

I remembered Rob did an article on this – it says book a return ticket – does it have to be a return ticket or is one way ok – then use for a return ticket in the future??

      • AJA says:

A one way ticket is fine. You will need to call anyway to redeem the FTV when you eventually want to use it and can add the return flight as well as pay extra Avios at the same time.

  • Cheshire Pete says:

Anyone managed to find a way to track the progress on the spend £5000 get 10,000 Avios on BAPP offer which end November 30th? These things used to track in the past but I don’t see anything on this offer!?

    • Duncan says:

I downloaded all transactions for the offer period as a spreadsheet, removed rows that were repayments, and just got the sum of the remainders. That’s an easy way to get the net spend after any refunds or amex offers etc.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Amex offers don’t net off against spend or spend £100 get £20 back is counted as £100 spent not £80

        • Duncan says:

Ah, I didn’t know that. I figured “better safe than sorry”, but that’s good to know.

    • AJA says:

I’m just using the spreadsheet I use to track Avios earned on my card. Start date was 23 August I believe so it’s just anything after that date.

    • Waddle says:

No tracker. I just counted everything manually.

    • elguiri says:

I went into the app under transactions, chose the cardmember and then just totted up since the start date.

    • BJ says:

Just use the appropriate filters in your app monthly statements, add each together, subtract any refunds since 23/8 and any spend before 23/8. Should just be very simple arithmetic. few

    • James says:

I asked Amex through the online chat function; they manually added the transactions together for me.

    • Paul says:

As it happens, received an email this morning… “Spend £5,000 anywhere, get 10,000 bonus Avios
We noticed you used your American Express® Card ending 57000 at Avios. If your transaction meets the offer terms, your credit should appear on your statement within five business days (however it can take up to 90 days from the Offer end date). ”
Browsing my statements, looks about right as the total, so just waiting for points to post…

      • Chris says:

I recently received my BAPP but I don’t see such an offer under my offers tab. Any thoughts?

  • Waddle says:

Has anyone stayed at the Bahia del Duque in Tenerife? Looked nice so I’ve booked a stay via Emyr Thomas. Wonder if space-available upgrades include being put into a Casas Ducales level room.

    • Anna says:

Not been in the hotel but the setting is very nice above a lovely beach with good facilities and awesome views of the sunset over La Gomera. Quite near to shops and bars so can get a bit busy but it varies depending on the time of year, of course.

    • ankomonkey says:

Stayed about 10 years ago (so lots of time for things to change). Found the hotel buildings and grounds impressive and the food very good, but felt the whole place was overpriced. It’s nice, but not nice enough to warrant what they charged back then.

    • xcalx says:

I still use the old brown beach towels for the garden which must be 20 years old now (shamelessly removed from the sunbeds) The little beach bar which we affectionately call the bar on stilts is great for apeople watching and few drinks with lunch. Beware, the sea can drag you back in when trying to exit.

  • Rich says:

Pretty painless day 2 test from Simplytestme just now.

Ordered in advance and received by Royal Mail on Day 0. Easy to upload photo to the website, and result back in 90 minutes (not that that bit matters, but would happily use them again if I needed a certified LFT for any reason).

One of our party got caught out trying to book the day before travel. One managed it in the morning, but after midday it wouldn’t accept a second booking. (I think you could probably just give a later date for your arrival in the UK in this case.)

    • FatherOfFour says:

Ironic that their diagram of an LFT shown on their website banner is that of an invalid test!

    • James says:

We’ve used Chronomics a few times now, previously for Test to Return and now for Day 2. What baffles me is how, each and every time, the text confirming “your result is ready” pops up literally the same moment you’ve uploaded the photo!

Every certificate I have has the identical “received at lab” time to “result ready” time! I’m assuming some form of AI is used to auto validate the uploaded pic. £17.09 with the BA discount (no need to be flying on BA, just type in any random Booking Reference and it’ll accept it!)

      • Jane says:

I’ve just done the day 2 tests with Chronomics, the upload seems a bit of a faff… is it completely necessary ?

        • John says:

In practice, doing the test is unnecessary.

I suppose they want you to upload it so they have a record of the results in case the authorities accuse them of not sending out the tests
