Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Is it possible to get a Supp card in your own name? I’m thinking of getting one to have as a spare in case I ever lose my main card.

    • Travel Strong says:

      Yes

    • Andrew says:

And you get a second set of offers on it, which can be useful.

    • Manny_D says:

Brilliant thanks. I assume I would select “other” for relationship to you when adding a supplementary card?

    • Cats are best says:

There’s Amex “additional card”, which is simply an extra card for he same identity (card shows “A.C.” after the name.)

Aside from providing a spare, the AC is plastic and works with contactless, unlike the metal main card.

      • Manny_D says:

Is there a separate way to get this? Or is at a case of just adding via the same supplementary card holder form.

  • Jonathan says:

When booking a short haul international Avios flight with AA (via BAEC) in Economy, is checked luggage included ?

    • Blenz101 says:

      Yes

      • Blenz101 says:

Ah. I’ve always had it but never been below silver. Seems that is a factor!

        • Lady London says:

          Yes 1.
Also some checkin staff forget but silver is an extra as well and both up to 32k. Staff remember when mentioned though.

          • Joe says:

Not 32kg, they don’t offer this in Y even for their own elites. Sometimes they may do it but seen a number of agents at O’Hare charge the overweight fee.

      • Jonathan says:

I thought so, the option it gives is Main Cabin, and not Basic Economy

    • Sean says:

      not always

      • roberto says:

If you have BA Silver or Gold yes from my own experience. There is full details on the AA site, I had reason to double check it recently (BGI to LAS in ecomony) and it all explained fairly well. I am travelling currently and can’t provide a link but search and you will find.

        • Sean says:

my recently booked lax to las as a blue was HBO

        • Jonathan says:

I don’t have BAEC Silver / Gold, so no hope there ! The route I’m also looking at can’t be booked via BA.com, it can only be done via a phone call so it’s easier said than done to get some t&cs for the flight booking…

    • Jonathan says:

After posting this, I’m also very much considering going for AA Business class redemption, Economy costs 9K Avios plus £15.10 for the route, and Business class is 16.5K plus amount of same cash

Anyone got any idea how good AA Business class on short haul International routes and what their MIA lounge is like ? I know there won’t be any truly great seats that go fully flat, but that can always be done another time

      • Mirp says:

AA’s MIA lounge is very large. Was very crowded when I was there. There may also be restrictions on access based on destination. At one point people booking from the US to Caribbean & Mexico were not allowed lounge access. But those going further afield to Argentina & Brazil were allowed into lounges. And there is some difference between AA Flagship lounges and regular old lounges. The AMEX Centurion lounge was ridiculously crowded when I visited.

        • Jonathan says:

          Hmmm doesn’t sound too great

The flight I’m looking at leaves at 10.30am, and is to a city in northern Colombia. I think AA dominates a lot of South America / Caribbean routes from MIA so there’ll be a lot of their passengers in the airport.

There is another flight that leaves around two hours later, but it’s a case of guessing when the most people will be around, how long’s a piece of string !

          Thank you for your insight

          • elguiri says:

Make sure you hold on to your luggage barcode sticker thingy. Except for Bogota, the other airports tend to check you are leaving with your own luggage, by matching your tag in hand with the one on the case. If you’ve lost it, you can be in for a long wait/discussion before leaving baggage claim…

        • Liam says:

AA have changed the lounge access policy, possibly just temporarily, to allow AA Platinum and above, or people travelling in J/F, to use lounges for trips to Mexico and the Caribbean. I flew ORD-CLT-AUA return recently got Admirals Club (AA’s basic lounge) access in ORD and CLT in both directions as an AA Platinum flying in F (essentially domestic F). I don’t think I’d have got Flagship Lounge access in CLT, although I didn’t check because I didn’t have time on the way out and on the way back I wanted to try the Centurion Lounge there.

          • davef says:

This is a good thing!. Last time I was in Lima I had to grab someone who tried to leave with my luggage.

      • Liam says:

What’s the route? It’s possible that what they’re calling “Business” will basically be the same as their domestic F: a 2-2 configuration, a decent-sized seat but definitely not lie-flat.

  • xcalx says:

A few days ago someone mentioned an easy way to record a call on an iphone. I thought I saved the page but can’t find it. Anyone else know how to do it. Thanks

    • Tracey says:

Settings> control centre> Scroll down to ‘Voice memos’ and click the + sign.
To use it, from Home Screen swipe up and choose the voice memo button, swipe down, you get a countdown of 3 seconds which you can use to dial the number. When you’ve finished you call click on the bar at the top of your screen to end the recording.
My iPhone is old, on a more modern iPhone you probably replace ‘swipe up’ with ‘swipe from top right corner’.

  • jj says:

Some great looking places there – thanks, both.

  • John says:

Looking to book three rooms via Hilton ( wife/ myself and two sons/girlfriends)
    1. Do I receive points for all rooms if one booking and I am paying?
    2. I am diamond ( do we all receive free breakfast/club lounge)
    Thanks

    • Blenz101 says:

See todays Accor article for point 1.

Only you and your wife get Diamond benefits.

    • John says:

      1. Points for 2 rooms only

      2. Only your room gets lounge, and breakfast for 2 people. Some hotels go beyond and will give it to everyone in your party.

  • Thywillbedone says:

    Hi all.

Anyone know if AMEX runs discount offers from retailers/hotels etc for cardholders in other countries as they do here? I imagine so but have never held one elsewhere.

    Thanks.

    • Kwisstan says:

I can confirm they do. My German Amex has similar offers on. Not as many as on my UK one though

    • Ikaz says:

Similar offers to the UK ones on my French Air France amex, most of the time it is for the same offers that the UK card has going on. Not as many offers than we get here though

  • Andrew says:

November offers have appeared on Barclaycard. Notable ones are the 10% rebate at Mozzers (stackable with PAW) and a 10% rebate at HIX.

  • Mikeact says:

Just wondering if anybody has considered, or actually flown the 5th Freedom, Milan to JFK with Emirates complete with on board shower ?

    • Rob says:

I considered it as an option pre-covid when availability with BA and VS was nil, but the timing was never great for a same-day UK connection. Not sure if that has changed.

    • Mirp says:

I flew the flight in Business (so no showers) in October 2019. It was a nice flight. Half term treat for my child and to use up some orphan Emirates miles.
