We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Any suggestions on a quick and cheap way to get Shangri La Jade status please?
Status matcher site didn’t seem to think this was possible with IHG or Hilton.

    Thanks

    Amex Travel spend £400 / £100 credit.
Prices in Thailand are so ridiculously cheap that a hotel I am thinking of booking is coming up at £390.
Assuming the spend can be cumulative, can anyone suggest the cheapest possible thing I can book to take me over the £400 threshold?
I feel you used to be able to book experiences in the past, but that is not currently visible to me.

    Any suggestions welcome.

    • Ryanfozzie says:

Are you able to add an ‘Experience’ to your booking? Maybe transfers?

      • Aston100 says:

I can’t see experiences any more.
The only options are air, hotel, car, bundles.
If there was a hotel + car bundle, I might have considered it. It is however cheaper for me to book a car directly with an international hire firm rather than (the same car & firm) through Amex Travel.

One night in a hotel in Goa, random day in Jan prices from 5.89.

      • Sandgrounder says:

Actually there are a much better selection around the £10 in Bangers.

        • Aston100 says:

Yeah but I’m not likely to be visiting, regardless!
Though I suppose the £2 saving compared to a 2 night booking in Goa might give me a warm feeling.

      • Aston100 says:

        Fantastic. Thanks Sandgrounder.
Hopefully, no issues if I don’t turn up.

I usually fly one-world airlines but have two Virgin Upper Class flights coming up – are Virgin miles worth having and should I pay for extra miles with miles boost ?

    • Andrew says:

Definitely worth collecting, you’ll get a few Greggs Bacon rolls and cups of coffee out of two upper returns.

    • yorkieflyer says:

I have before and if used for VS reward flights good value but ended up transferring them for Hilton points, so not so good. I guess the moral of the story is plan what you likely would use them for

    • Degsy says:

Defo worth having but personally I only do Boost if there’s an offer, which in the past has been 30% or so. And which happens every six.months or so (pre-Covid). Otherwise, only if you need them for a specific (time-bound) reason.

    Nooooo! Netflix is down 😭

  • Grimz says:

BA cancelled a leg of my booking on 2nd December back from San Diego. I want to rebook for 5 – 22nd Nov 22. Can I let BA know I won’t be travelling and will call back early December to rebook when my flights will be available.

  • Save East Coast Rewards says:

AA domestics – From my understanding baggage for ‘main cabin’ domestic bags offer zero free bags for regular, one free bag for ruby (BA bronze), two free bags for sapphire (silver) and three free bags for emerald (gold). Is this information still up to date as when I booked I can now select main cabin extra seats for free as it recognises my status but it doesn’t show the increased baggage allowance

    • bafan says:

Yes that’s accurate. They’ll recognize it at the airport. I flew AA today.

  • Vit says:

Hello all, need a bit of advice please — I have both mbna (the one with 0.5% cb) and free blue curve (virgin backed). I normally use amex while spending for work abroad and use mbna for own expense to avoid fx fees. I’ve seen Hfpers using curve abroad without any fx fees. Is this applicable for all countries? (Planning to use the card in Thailand). Below is what I’ve seen from Curve website.

Curve Blue (free) – Spend up to £500 per month fee-free. There’s a 2% fee for any more spend. Withdraw up to £200 per month from foreign ATMs. There’s 2% fee or a £2 charge (whichever is higher) for any further withdrawals.

    • yorkieflyer says:

I’m really not sure its wise to use Curve with any underlying card or bank you wish to maintain. I’ve used Curve for FX use abroad incl occasional ATM use and been sent packing by Creation (IHG) as most others.
Basically, Curve is subverting the business model of other card issuers. First Amex and now Creation. I’ve unlinked my Virgin card and binned Curve and hoping for the best. Caveat Emptor
