We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Data Point – Downgraded from Curve Metal to Curve Blue via app. Easily done, they even suggested a refund of pro-rate annual fees. Hopefully it turns up, I was anyway nearing my annual renewal date, so not expecting much.
    Cheers to them.

  • Tw33ty says:

I definitely activated the offer ten or fifteen minutes after buying a few things in selfridges and it tracked and paid for me, which I was surprised about.

  • AngryOctopus says:

Data point on amex offer redemption email notifications.

I know someone who received an email confirming they redeemed their FreeNow offer, but no subsequent emails for other offer redemptions (Selfridges offer/HN recently)

I myself have not gotten any email notifications for months now, not even for the FreeNow which we both redeemed on the same day.

  • Matt says:

Hi all advice on SL GC points please. The website says Jade members get $1.25 per 10 points to redeem for restaurant/bars. Does this only get applied to instant rewards? When you select dining voucher it only offers the standard rate i.e. $50 for 500 points.

DP on BA 241 50% cancellations. Got a response from BA cust relations for my complaint 16.9.21 when online chat refused to move our cancelled flight beyond 12 months of booking. Now BA say it can be moved 12 months from ticketing – but I must phone in, they even almost say ‘good luck with that’. Not sure whether to accept this as resolution in first instance given BA refused same request 3 weeks ago. Flights are Tokyo so inclined to push back and assert EU/UK 261 and request 12 months from cancelled travel date (Sept 2022). Thoughts welcome. Thanks.

If you have time on your side and determined to get what you want then why not push back?

Car rental. Work policy lets me choose Avis or Sixt. For years, I’ve used Enterprise so I’m less au fait with the Avis/Sixt options – is one better than the other?

    • Rob says:

Avis earns Avios, Sixt earns Virgin Points – although check that corporate rates count. Sixt refused to pay out on my last rental because, erm, I used the Virgin Atlantic discount code.

      • jj says:

Car rental is full of cowboy operators, hidden charges, false claims of damage and dishonestly applied extras. Since once having had my fingers burned (Europcar in TFS, I am looking at you), I always read reviews of both the brand and the local agency before booking – that’s much more important than earning a few points.

FWIW, Which readers consistently score Avis much higher than Sixt in the annual survey of rental companies Of the big boys, Alamo/Enterprise are consistently rated top of the pile when you’re spenfding your own money.

        • Super Secret Stuff says:

Avis now don’t own or operate any of there cars, so you achieve virtually nothing by going with them…

        • Pete1968 says:

@jj – agreed – proper insurance is a must, there are potentially rip-off charges at various levels that you can avoid very cheaply, check out insurance4carhire and similar providers. Last time I used them with a rental, the very small cost (a couple of £s a day) covered the excess waiver (so easily paid for itself) and any damage claims that might have been sprung on you, spurious of not, eg try £500 for a scratch that was maybe there when you hired the car but was not noted on your contract. I think Amex Plat covers this as well (for free) but check the Amex T&Cs.

        • HBommie says:

I agree, although I don’t bother with reviews that much. A worldwide excess cover gives me more peace of mind.

  • John says:

Well nobody responded that I saw when I asked about Norway but I can confirm that I was able to olci with BA and get a mobile BP, on arrival the immigration officer scanned my screenshot of the 2nd dose QR code (no need for NHS app) but wow so many questions for everyone on a British passport, 3-5 minutes each, glad I was near the front.

Once you’re in it’s like covid doesn’t exist, even the plastic screens are mostly gone, and only Chinese tourists wearing masks (yes there are a few) though a handful of coughing Norwegians also wore them which is quite responsible

Return flight I used verifly, uploaded the NHS app PDF file and scanned the PLF QR code. Was then able to olci and get a mobile BP ahead of time. At the gate they wanted to see the verifly selfie and/or printed PLF

Can u transit to Bangkok via Singapore airlines if its on One ticket without quarantine ?
    Uk passport and double vaccinated

    • blenz101 says:

There is an approved list of airlines for transit in SIN. I would suggest you do your own research and come back and ask only if something isn’t clear.

Any advice given will not know your full circumstances or those of others reading it who may also follow it. It is far better you look on the relevant airline / embassy / FCO websites in the first instance rather than ask a stranger on the internet.

    • Clive says:

Singapore Airlines has a good information section on transit. Basically if on one ticket you are chaperoned to a special waiting area. You will require a RT PCR Test within 48 hours of departure.

      • Sina says:

I transited from LHR-SIN-PKT two weeks ago and they gave us purple wristbands allowing us to go anywhere in SIN airport and SQ lounge. But when you come back to SIN from BKK they will keep you in a premium waiting area until your flight (assuming business class)
