We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Received email from IHG re status extension

“Elite Status Extended through February 2023

“Your current IHG® Rewards Elite status will automatically be extended through February 2023. And as a reminder, points never expire for Elite members!

“Keep in mind these exciting changes might not be updated in our system as soon as you receive this email. We’re working to make sure our members’ accounts are updated within the next few weeks. “

    • Tony1 says:

Elite Gold not worth much – not excited – but hey anything is a bonus …

Got Creation letter yesterday … not what I was expecting, credit limit increased to 20k£

    • BJ says:

Got that too, I wonder if we will get another free 25k spire points this year 🙂

      • ChrisC says:

Hopefully. Will probably appear early next year if we do.

        • BJ says:

Yes, likely so. Could do with them now as I need to buy IHG points in the promo this week. Now kicking myself that I failed to get creative with IHG preferring to channel all energy through HH. Now finding IHG the better option for USA value next year and stuck without the points that are amongst the hardest to get other than stays.

          • Dean says:

What’s deal with the HH earning card. Does it need Bendy in between?, or are there other ways to ramp up miles on it?

          • BJ says:

@Dean, Bendy4me but I stopped playing in spring when things started getting noisy.

    • Olly says:

No word on whether Ambassador status will also be extended though

      • Doreen says:

Royal Amb & Inner Circle renewed – guess plain old Ambassadors too 🙂

    • Andrew says:

Excellent news. I was considering buying AMB to extend my Spire before the end of the year, glad I held out, saved me $200.

    • Lee says:

Free night from credit card issued in 2021 also extended to the end of 2022

      • Ben says:

The email breathlessly talks about ‘exciting news’! Give that my status was due to expire end of Dec 2022 its not really that exciting (albeit welcome). More exciting would be retaining my Creation IHG card.

      • Rachel Robinson says:

Did it say credit card nights were being extended in the email? I didn’t see that. Would you mind pointing me to where you found that?

        • Lee says:

Don’t think I can post link here but here is what says on IHG website:
IHG Rewards Club Credit Card Anniversary Night Certificates awarded in 2021 can be redeemed through December 31, 2022. Your account will be updated soon.

    • Froggitt says:

I’m no longer Elite, I received a different email about points expiry…….

“While we initially shared points would begin expiring in December 2021, we have extended the pause on points expiration through 31 December 2022.”

    • Louie says:

For those of us without status, I’ll add that points expiry has been paused to 31 December 2022.

  • Tony1 says:

Morning all you insomniac hfp ers

Any rumours of Black Friday Hotel offers ?

    • BJ says:

It’ll be all the same variations on the usual suspects. Media points have usually been the pick of the bunch if used wisely. The really stunning deals that have popped up grom time to time are often difficult to get or the restrictions limit their appeal. With many of us here getting quite creative in recent years it’s sort of difficult to get excited about regular hotel promotions 🙂 100% points bonuses have been near constant during the pandemic and these can easily return 3 nights for 2 on flexible terms. So all in all I’m not too fussed about BF hotel promos this year.

    • Andrew says:

Is Black Friday even still a thing? Very 2015. I think things are always on promotion now anyway.

    • Blair says:

Worth looking for intern rates which can pop up. But only at hotels you actually want to stay at. 25% off a hotel that’s not for you is no real bargain.

  • lee says:

Just received Email from British Airways downgraded My return leg From First to Business Class Hong Kong to London at the End of Jan .
(Im just Transiting through Hong kong )

Its an Avios 2 for 1 booking
What are my options ? am I entitled to be rebooked on another airline Or to be rerouted say from Singapore to London ?
    Thanks in Advance

    • John says:

You need to get rebooked anyway as you’re not allowed to transit HKG on separate tickets

    • Thywillbedone says:

Hong Kong tightening borders it seems. I have a Cathay flight from BKK to LHR via Hong Kong booked around New Years and they have just moved the first leg to three days before the second leg! It was an Avios redemption – will have to cancel as it doesn’t work with such a layover.

      • The Streets says:

We were treated like zombies when we landed at Hong Kong airport earlier this year. Such a memorable experience I will never forget even though it took us 5 hours to exit the airport and start our three week quarantine!

        • Froggitt says:

Sounds like Heathrow earlier this year

        • Thywillbedone says:

Yeah, I was looking at cash fares with Singapore Airlines to get home …would involve a c.12 hour layover in Changi …which I thought might be acceptable (explore airport/stay in affordable airport hotel etc), until I read some of the stories …

          • Dubious says:

What storys? I’m interested to hear them.

You can book the airside transit hotel at Changi – preferable to using the transit holding area – but I don’t know if they have restrictions on the country of origin.

          • Dubious says:

            (Origin of the flight)

  • BJ says:

In practical terms your options are constrained by the relative stubbornness of you and the BA CSA you deal with. Cut a long story short, there remains a lot of flux in aircraft deployment at the moment so any guarantees of F are worth little, therefore, I’d accept CW and target the 75% downgrade redress. However, if you do want something else go after it with the right attitude (which is not entitled!) and see what is possible. Contrary to some of the horror sties on here I have found BA brilliant throughout the pandemic, my only frustration being with calling issues lately.

  • babyg_wc says:

Yay won a Hilton/McLaren paddock pass for Abu Dhabi, thanks Rob for not posting, I’m sure this kept the price down 🙂

  • Claire says:

Anyone received Amex / Morrisons 10% credit yet?

  • Andrew says:

Lots of new Amex offers today – Selfridges (in-store and online this time), Fortnums, Valentino, Melia hotels.

  • KBuffett says:

I’m currently abroad in South Africa.
I wanted to send some Diwali sweets to friends in UK. Can anyone recommend where I can order a good quality/authentic selection box with guaranteed next day delivery?

    • KP says:

You can try desicart.co.uk or guptas or poojasweets. But most places will be closed for diwali orders now I believe.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Barfia (very good barfi) still guarantee Diwali delivery if ordered by mid day today.

    • Igloo says:

If you are looking for something a bit fancy then Barfi Bites is lovely, although I am not sure if they will be able to dispatch before Diwali now.

Barfia, which has been recommended already, is also a really good shout. They do some really interesting flavours.
