Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • Alekun says:

Is there any bonus for applying for a Platinum Supp Card for the partner?

    • Optimus Prime says:

      Yes, 5000 points.

    • Rob says:

5k as long as you don’t do it during the original application.

      https://www.americanexpress.com/uk/benefits/supplementary-cards

      • Harry T says:

Just be aware that no one seems to be getting the points for adding a supp at the moment, so you might have to chase.

        • Ryan says:

Just give it more time and it should come through (was quoted up to 90 days)

          • Jimbob says:

I’ve been told 120 days (having previously been told 30 days). Currently c.105 days after hitting spend target

          • Harry T says:

I don’t trust Amex when they say to wait a certain number of days. That’s just them trying to delay your complaint for a while.

          • Mr(s) Entitled says:

The T&C’s are 90 days in “rare” instances. Once you are at 91 days I’d raise a compliant because otherwise they will continue to fob you off.

Also note, the T&C’s specify that you must not have had this offer before.

I’m at 42 days and I don’t have the points but I have had them previously, albeit in excess of two years ago now. No idea if they are enforcing this, or just being slow to attribute the points to me.

          • Katie says:

@Jimbob whats the connection between a supp bonus and a target spend, you should have got. your target spend within 30 days (after next annual payment)

        • Luke says:

I added a sup cardholder to my Gold card when HFP were running an article… 2 months ago. The 3k odd points were added within a few days after, and the additional 3k odd points were added last week. Took a few months but they eventually arrived without me chasing them.

  • Grimz says:

I have a BA Avios 241 booking and the return leg was cancelled, we was due to return 27th November. I now want to rearrange my flights for outbound on 5th November 2022. Do I wait till after 5th November 2021 (1yr) or do I wait till 355 days out (15th) to call BA and try and get my flights changed as the new flights won’t be available book yet? My original outbound this year was on the 20th November. I guess BA won’t agree to this change as they are now going with the booking date and not with the departure date as per earlier comments on HFP.

    • TedL says:

@Grimz, see my comment on page 4, a new flight booked today has ticket validity 12 months from flight date NOT booking date. But how they will choose to interpret their policy in your case is anybody’s guess, they seem to change stance as frequently as their aircraft leave Heathrow!

      • John says:

Please tell me where I find the ticket validity date?
I cant see anything on my booking

        • TedL says:

i think this is a new development, havn’t seen it on previous bookings. Its in the “Payment Information” section immediately below the ticket numbers on “Your e-ticket receipt” e-mail.

  • John says:

My wife and I both have 500 Shangri-la points expiring at the end of December.
Can we simply get USD$50 dining credit vouchers each or do we need at least 1,000 points each before we can get a dining credit voucher?

    • The Original Nick says:

I’m in the same boat. I’d like to know this too.

    • Froggee says:

I just logged into my Shangri-La account and it would let me redeem for a $50 voucher for 500 points so I don’t see why not. Do you have this option under redeem points? I have 9,000 that are expiring and doubt I’ll be in London any time soon and can’t be bothered making a 400 mile trip for a slap-up dinner so I think I’ll need to take Singapore Amazon vouchers and send my colleagues there S$350 of toilet paper.

      • John says:

        thanks Froggee
just noticed on the desktop version of the website I can change the voucher value to USD$50 (I couldn’t see this on my phone).

        • Froggee says:

Glad I could be of help. If only I had a friend who could spend $900 on dinner at the Shard for me!

    • Nigel W says:

Similar boat. I’ve seen you can gift the points to someone in case they need to use the points asap.

  • r* says:

Anyone been to iceland recently? Does the test before arrival need to be an in person test or can it be an at home upload the photo lateral flow test?

    • Harry T says:

      https://www.covid.is/sub-categories/certificates

      “Self tests are not accepted”

Of course, your test certificate is unlikely to say if it was self administered. The Chronomics tests I’ve used before don’t say they are self administered at home. So it depends on your risk tolerance/assessment.

      • Harry T says:

Addendum: I haven’t been to Iceland. I’m just referring to chronomics tests I’ve used before for predeparture.

        • Kevin C says:

And the double vaccinated don’t need a test do they?

          • Jonathan says:

For entry to Iceland all tourists do:
“Rules for travellers without a network in Iceland: Vaccinated passengers, and those with prior infection of COVID-19, need to present a negative covid-19 test either a PCR or Rapid antigen test. NB. self-tests are not accepted.”
            https://www.covid.is/sub-categories/vaccination-and-antibodies

          • Harry T says:

Double vaccinated UK travellers don’t need a predeparture test to return to the UK any more, but I think all travellers permitted to Iceland require a predeparture test.

          • meta says:

I’ve been in September. Yes, you need an in-person test. The test will need to show the manufacturer, so Chronomics one won’t work. The test result is thoroughly checked on arrival. The border agent spent at least a minute checking all the details on the test. I would play it safe and book Collinson or similar in-person. Results in 15-30 minutes and has all the details required.

          • meta says:

Here’s the link for the current requirement on tests. Chronomics PDF result one doesn’t satisfy all the info needed.

            https://www.covid.is/sub-categories/certificates

          • r* says:

Bah, was hoping I wouldnt need to do an on-site. I think I’m going to have to do one the day before flying tho as the flights at 625 from luton and collinson doesnt open until 5, I doubt that would be enough time.

          • Kevin C says:

Thanks all. Maybe St Pancras for us then.

  • idrive says:

I referred some people to apply for Amex.
1 of them got me a reduced bonus (in comparison with the others).
How many points shall I have received? Sent out Platinum referal, they applied for Gold.
To my understanding it should be 24k for each approved person, irrespective of the card they get, do you agree?
what is your experience, with bonus these days?

    • K says:

I had similar problem, he to call and speak to Brighton about it, they adjusted it. Chat was not useful

    • FFoxSake says:

Did you hit the annual 90k per annum limit maybe?

      • idrive says:

Sorry for double comment, it it seems that the limit was reached indeed (by doing some maths). this is a bit tricky but still better than anything!

    • Katie says:

Yes you will get the full bonus, when they activate the card.

  • Zara says:

Hi- does anyone have a view of the best Amelia family resorts (young children under 5)? I purchased the media points when they had that offer on but have not been able to use them so am considering something for next year. Possibly Spain and there seems to be a nice one in Morocco but the points value isn’t great. TIA

    • David D says:

Can’t think of any, though if you need to extend them you can purchase a further 1,000 for €5.

      • Zara says:

Do you have a link for it? I’ve been trying to find it on the melia rewards site for over an hour to no avail. I keep going round in circles!

  • Harry T says:

Has anyone flown from Schiphol to the UK since the UK abolished the predeparture test for vaccinated passengers? I last flew from AMS to NCL in September and it was a bloody clusterfook, with all UK passengers being corralled into some awful area for document checking and processing, even after checking in at the desk and already presenting documents. I just want to know if I can expect the same this weekend, as I’ll allot extra time at the airport for bureaucratic nonsense.

    • Phil W says:

It was the same doing FRAEDI. I would have described it as an Omnishambles, designed to increase the propensity of transmission but clusterfook would’ve been apt and more concise.

      • Harry T says:

Sorry to hear that. Most airports abroad currently seem to be trying to increase the chances of airport based covid transmission as much as possible, by forcing you to queue to check in at the airport, and through other ill thought out measures. Schiphol, Madrid and Heraklion stand out as the worst offenders recently. It’s probably unfair to include the former two with HER, as they at least had air conditioning and facilities you might find outside of a third world prison 🙂

        • Michael C says:

Harry, I’m flying back from MAD tomorrow. Am I right in thinking all check-in etc. is at the “main” building (T1,2,3), then get the shuttle train to the satellite terminal 4S?

    • den says:

If you are referring to the gate D8 I think they send you to to check everything about six times then yes my wife still had to go through this last Sunday flying back to Newcastle but it was day one of the new testing rules for the UK so may have changed since.

      • Harry T says:

Thank you, hopefully I get to avoid spending hours being coralled through D8.

        • David D says:

More likely to be D6 at AMS for the bus transfer to an Embraer. Check in end of last month was fairly straightforward (used Sky Priority lane). Other than that, the bus gate is still a pain. Re-check only of the passport and boarding card, then the boarding card again to get on the bus.

  • rjn21 says:

Some Amex offer timing data points:

Spend £1 get 50/100 avios. Triggered Wednesday 27 October, avios received Tuesday 02 November.

Spend £5k get 10,000 avios. Triggered Saturday 23 October, email confirmation Friday 29 October, avios received Tuesday 02 November. I had various PayPal payments and they counted.

Morrisons, nothing yet from the current offer. In the September offer, between 10 and 16 days from spend to rebate.

    • idrive says:

Amex Referral: I referred some friends to apply for their new card. One of them got me reduced bonus.
As I read the terms, it should 24k per approved person, irrespective of what card they apply. Do you agree? i just read the terms again and it seems so.

if you went over the limit of 90, you basically get the difference (ie. 90-24-24-24-18)
      When is the limit resetting?

    • Whisper says:

Did spend on the supplemental card count towards the £5k get 10k avios? Mine has not triggered, and now I’m wondering.

      • rjn21 says:

Supp card spend does not count to a spend £5k get 10k avios offer saved to the main card.

A supp card may have its own separate spend £x, get y, offer, but that’s exclusive to that supp.
