We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Hotels through Amex travel… is there any way of forcing/guaranteeing Amex charge my card instead of paying locally? Trying to trigger the offer but it’s not playing ball, the one I thought would do it ended up being confirmed as pay on arrival.

    • TGLoyalty says:

I believe FHR and then the ones booked via Expedia allow paying now

What are you trying to book?

      • Nick says:

Thanks TG. I’m trying to book a weekend in Eastern Europe, got to the screen with card details and it looked as if it would be fine, but then the confirmation page said it was pay on arrival. Fortunately I could cancel. No decent FHR available so it was just a normal one. May try a different hotel and see if that works.

  • Mikeact says:

I see that Quatas frequent flyer members have spent four billion points in just two weeks, after Qantas opened the flood gates to Award bookings, equalling 15000 Business trips to Londand back ! Amazing.
I wonder how that compares to Avios now that burning is back.

  • xcalx says:

    BAP voucher question.
Hit the spend last week and voucher is in my BAEC account. Just had £800 + of flight refunds which has left the progress banner showing “Spend £162 by 10 Sep 2022 to receive your Companion Voucher”
I will have quite a few refunds over the next month, will the voucher be toing and froing from Amex to BA. Thanks.

    • Yuff says:

Nope, once it’s in your account it can’t be returned to Amex.

    • Froggee says:

How quickly did the voucher hit your account? I’m trying to time mine for 31 December and am looking for as many data points as possible! Thanking you kindly.

      • ATP says:

Took me about 72 hours to get mine in my account. Although, it did trigger on a weekend and I’ve seen others say there’s a delay if triggered over the weekend vs weekday.

      • xcalx says:

        Saturday spend, email Tuesday evening.

        • Froggee says:

Thank you. I’m hoping to fly 29th June 2024, possibly 30th June 2024 so timing is everything on this one! I’m trying to decide on doing the spend on the 28th December or 29th. I’ll trigger it buying an Amazon gift voucher as payment tends to go through immediately for these. I have 2 x 241s currently tied up in FTVs that we have booked for the summer but I’m not sure we’ll necessarily use and will earn another that can then be used for the 2024 trip so it could work out perfectly with the six month extension!

          • Marina says:

Flights only open 355 days before why triggering 2-4-1 so early ?

          • Froggee says:

I’m limited by my card year. So I can trigger it in Jan/Feb and have an expiry of Jan/Feb 2024 or if I time it perfectly at the end of December it will have an expiry of end June 2024 (because of extra six months policy that ends 31 December) and be able to use it for summer holidays as school year in Scotland ends 28th June 2024. It’s all in the planning!

    • AJA says:

Just be aware that if you keep the card beyond your anniversary and you have negative spend towards this year’s voucher due to refunds that the negative balance gets added to next year’s target so instead of 10k you will have to spend more.

  • Peter says:

Apply for the platinum card today or is there gonna be a better offer soon? Was was the best bonus ever on Platinum? Thanks

  • Mikeact says:

Anybody having any issues logging into Nectar App or Web or have I been robbed ?

    • Youllnever says:

      All good here 👍🏻

    • AJA says:

No problems here. Sorry if you have been robbed. Call Nectar they are usually good at restoring points if it’s due to fraud.

  • KP says:

Just received my 25k bonus avios on Barclays Premier. Super happy !!

  • John says:

Cannot make a VAT payment to HMRC this morning via Curve or by a debit card.
Anyone managed to pay HMRC this morning ?
    Thanks

    • Katie says:

      metal or non metal?

    • Cramondben says:

had problems yesterday, went through ok this morning.

    • Char Char says:

If you are getting stuck on the secure 3d/number check then try a different browser, seems there are issues sometimes with certain browsers like chrome

      • Jonathan says:

Good shout, Char Char. I was having problems with Chrome so switched to Edge and payment went through fine.

  • NSL says:

I don’t usually track hotel prices but I would like to stay in the Intercontinental Monterey in 2022. The dynamic IHG pricing seems to change by the hour (for little reason) but prices are still way to high for my liking and no reward nights are available.

Is this price likely to decrease during any IHG sale (if there is one) or shall so just look elsewhere. I appreciate this is a bit of a black box so was just wondering if anyone had ever seen a price drop previously?

    • NSL says:

Typo: *shall I just look elsewhere

    • JDB says:

Have you checked whether there is anything going on at the time you are trying to book? Public holiday, major event etc. there could be a glitch, but there might be a good reason that might also affect other hotels as well.

    • ChrisC says:

Check points bookings for each day of your stay rather than the entire stay

Example from my experience where I wanted to book a hotel for Thurs – Mon on Points

Searching for that = no availability

Seaching for each night individually shows availabilty for every night apart from the Saturday.

So I booked Thur/Fri and Sun nights using points and Sat using cash. Booking each night individually means if the rate goes down I can cancel and rebook and get some points back.

      • berneslai says:

Thanks. It doesn’t appear to offer any award nights, ever. I was planning on using my IHG weekend voucher but the one night rate (late July) is still astronomical.

    • Chas says:

It won’t help you with your specific query, but we stayed here for one night in 2019 and loved it. My wife was really keen to have a sea-view room which weren’t available when we booked (6+ months out), so I booked the highest room category room available (it was expensive then too – on cash). I took out Ambassador and we were then upgraded to a (partial) sea-view suite which made my wife’s day.

    • Andrew says:

      It’s a great hotel.

Cross check all the options. We paid for the hotel with Avios in 2016 – something that is rarely recommended. On that occasion, we got 1.5p per Avios value on booking, but on check-in were upgraded to room worth 2p per Avios.
