Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • Shaw West says:

Booking Premium and upgrading using miles saved me Points and cash than booking Upper class with Miles and Cash.

    • Andrew says:

And will also earn you points for the base premium ticket. Same with BA – much much better option than booking flights with points/avios outright.

      • BJ says:

Also gives you change fees plus difference in fare plus the avios £35 which can all be very painful if it becomes necessary. BWC currently provides a sweetspot though.

  • @mkcol says:

How do I upgrade a BA cash ticket using Avios? I’ve tried all ways I can think of online & am getting nowhere.

    • David says:

Is it an upgradeable ticket ? Some eco tickets aren’t
Is the redemption available on the date you want ?
      Hope this helps

      • BJ says:

This the case with some BAH bookings but shouldn’t be so with flight. Nothing much working at BA tgese days, need to call I guess.
        .

        • MW says:

Last time I checked Q, O and G tickets were still not upgradeable though, as well as some bookings classed as “travel agency” fares (both third party and BAH)

          • ChrisC says:

BAH bookings can be upgraded using avios. Need to call them

UUA – for all booking types – explained in the guide to spending avios on the BA flyer talk board.

  • Louie says:

My sister has just heard back from BA CS, denying reimbursement after they cancelled the route she was booked on and refused to rebook them on an alternative flight, leaving them no choice but book with another airline. I know LadyLondon has (and others have) many times explained how to pursue this, but without a search facility (and yes I’ve tried site: headforpoints etc), I’m struggling to find one of the “idiots guides”. Has anyone bookmarked one of these discussions and could guide me there please?

  • Pete1968 says:

Straw poll. Who has been shoving Avios points into Nectar? Ie hard cash credit good for Ebay/ Sainsbo/ Argos vs the airline miles that are due for a devaluation sometime soon. Perhaps.

We have shoved about £3K into Nectar but keep the rest in BA tender.

(Have also shoved all Virgin miles into Hilton.)

    • Andy says:

Yeh, I’m slowly moving them over and funding other spending with them

    • Mattb says:

Nectar is incredibly insecure, I would leave more than a few hundred in there at any time.

      • Pete1968 says:

They are supposed to be good at refunding security breach losses, though.

I keep our £3K locked up ie the cards, we have a couple £hundred sitting at Ebay but you have to use them within 12 months or expire.

Don’t forget Nectar points expire after 12 months/ no card use.

    • BJ says:

Very fluid in my case, they have run back and forwards depending on how much avios I have freely available and how much are tied up in flights. Virgin to Hilton was my default for years but now collecting Vrgin miles for first time on account of ANA one way redemption changes.

    • Mr(s) Entitled says:

I’ve moved 100,000 Avios in Oct split 50/50 between eBay (Curry’s eBay store) and Argos. That got me £800 to put towards Christmas presents and represented a real saving of my own cash.

It was about 20% of my Avios balance but I am struggling to use them so will likely move more in due course.

  • Ant says:

Been a good day today managed to speak to someone on BA chat with within 15 min this morning and sort out a booking. And then this afternoon called the 0344 number and got through within 5 min.

    • BJ says:

I was also surprised to get through in only about 15 minutes on Saturday.

  • Triath5 says:

Looking at Thailand flights over winter…they involve a stopover in two nordic countries (on departure and return).

How do we feel about Thailand being put on a Nordic country red-list? Does that even exist? This really is beginning to give me a headache…all this planning SE Asia trip in Covid times.

    • Pete1968 says:

The whole world is rapidly getting over Covid-19, most pandemics are 2 year phenomena.

Go ahead and book without any fears whatsoever.

Coronavirus is going away right now and has probably already mostly gone away from the Western world. Apart from a few sniffles for the vaccinated. If you’re unvaccinated – tough. More fool you.

      • Char Char says:

        Average age of death 83.

      • Memesweeper says:

“you’re unvaccinated – tough. More fool you.”

Or more unlucky you. There’s plenty of folks out there that are unvaxxed because they cannot be. The unvaxxed refuseniks are putting them literally in mortal danger. The “too relaxed” vaxxed who won’t wear masks etc aren’t helping either.

        • Harry T says:

How many people genuinely can’t be vaccinated for legitimate medical reasons?

          • Memesweeper says:

I know three. Or knew, one of them was killed by Covid about six weeks ago.

        • Char Char says:

Eh it’s clearly not immunity and most people never had symptoms anyway

  • meta says:

Anyone looking to book Park Hyatt Kyoto, the availability for next year just opened up for many dates, including sakura season. It probably won’t last long, so I’d lock some dates in.

  • Simon says:

    Meta/Lady London

Would you have any aversion to Rob letting me contact you via email? Or else you contacting me via vikingsfanuk AT hotmail DOT com?

I just wanted to our ask your collective advice about the sh1t shower BA has crapped on me from on high?

    Many thanks in advance
