We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Have just seen an update from BA on the 3 day outage. Apparently it won’t be possible to make changes to any Avios booking during the 3 days, even if no more (or refund of) Avios is required. That sounds odd to me knowing what should be possible, but that’s what it says so just putting it out there!

The Amex Gold annual 10,000 point bonus – does spend on supplementary cards count or must it be from the primary cardholder? I can’t see any restrictions in the T&Cs but my wife’s tracker hasn’t updated for some recent spend on the supplementary card.

    • stevenhp1987 says:

I believe it includes all spend, including supplementary card, much like the spend £10k on BAPP.

The tracker might just be a little behind?

    • BuildBackBetter says:

      All spend

      • jj says:

Thanks, both. I’ll wait a couple of days and keep watching the tracker.

  • Ant says:

I need to book flights for Bahamas for Oct next year using an FTV with companion voucher. I guess i will need to call to do this?
Can I also apply evouchers to the same booking? What are the chances of the avios flights disappearing before i get through on the phone? And should I wait for the return flights to be available?
    What should be my strategy?

    • SteveJ says:

Yes you need to call to use FTV. I’d suggest two calls, once when outbound is available, secure those seats. Then call again to add return once they open up.

    • Anna says:

Ant – this is also the GCM route so we use it every year in normal times and find availability generally excellent, even for 3 of us in years when we all travel on award seats (and especially in mid-low season). I think it’s at least partly due to it departing LHR which isn’t as popular as LGW for leisure travel as I understand it. It’s worth monitoring availability for a few weeks before you book to see how quickly seats are being snapped up but I usually find they’re still there for a couple of days after being released as I need to wait for the next day MAN connection to appear as well before I swoop.

      • Anna says:

Also – the taxes aren’t massive on that route, so if you wanted to book your inbound online then call for refund of half the avios it should only cost you about £50 pp extra in CW.

    • John says:

      No evouchers on avios bookings

  • ash says:

Anyone any idea how long it takes for the amex plat £200 dining offer takes to be paid once used

    • SteveJ says:

Seems to vary, had a transaction on 23rd and the offer posted by 26th. Another on 24th still hasn’t posted. Now it’s over a week I’ll be getting in touch with them on chat.

    • Cats are best says:

Fastest credit was next day, slowest 7 days.

Didn’t seem to depend on the venue, I had a few breakfasts at Colbert, time to credit varied 1-4 days.

returning from Maldives. have an under 10.Travelling via Etihad.Q : does the under 10 need a pre departure negative PCR ?
Etihad didn’t need a test for him when we went to Abu Dhabi(so presuming they won’t need , no specific wording I can find that under 12s don!5 need) and UK gov doesn’t need one.Maldives govt website weirdly asks if has had a negative test although that can be just left blank I guess.any experiences?

    • Benilyn says:

No experience but would be interested if you find an answer. I’m doing MLE to AUH with Etihad soon and have a baby

      • Ali M says:

will report back whether denied boarding or let in 😂😅 we have looked at resources and believe it ‘should’ be ok.

Anyone flown into/out of Edinburgh Airport recently? Wondering how busy it is with COP26.

Also, what’s the current situation with priority pass lounges in the airport? Flying easyjet from Edinburgh

    • Chris says:

I flew 10 days ago on the first day of School holidays and it was really really busy but operating really slickly

Ignoring all the hype I imagine school holidays will have more impact than COP

well apart from in 30 minutes or so when AF1 lands 😂

    • Rantallion says:

Flew out of Edinburgh last Friday lunchtime – it was exceptionally quiet.

    • Darko says:

I flew to Edi on Wednesday 20th and returned on Thursday 22st. I didn’t notice anything in particular with how busy the airport was. I had BA lounge access, I believe PP uses Aspire so don’t know about it.

    • ianM says:

Flew last Wednesday, pretty quiet and secure car parks remarkably empty whilst it was rammed during holidays. Bit of a queue for security but they only had one lane open. Plenty of space in the Aspire lounge

    • Phil W says:

New Aspire definitely open, operating as normal.

    • Peggerz says:

Biden has just flown in to EDI according to the BBC. I suspect that’s not too unusual given the Edinburgh Hotels are block booked and COP26 delegations are mainly staying outside Glasgow.
I’ve noticed Devon & Cornwall, Northumbria & Cheshire Constabulary vehicles in the last 48 hours in Edinburgh.

      • AnotherUser says:

Thanks – that all sounds positive! Hotel prices/being booked out had me worried how busy the airport would be

      • John says:

Not very eco-friendly for Devon and Cornwall to drive all the way there…

      • Andrew says:

They usually fly POTUS into Prestwick. Guess he isn’t staying at Turnberry.

The Sri Lankan president is staying at the Dunblane Hyrdro, there are British Transport Police and protestors on the Perth Road outside

      • Gavin says:

Mutual aid between forces. East Devon was being policed by Cleveland police over the G7 weekend

      • Brian W says:

I flew out of Edi this morning Air Force One is parked up there.

        Aspire open for PP.

    • Rhys says:

I was in the new Aspire lounge there last week. Second time there and I really like the lounge.

    • David D says:

I flew out on 23 Oct and it was very busy – Aspire lounge full – couldn’t get in

      • David D says:

Different David D here, I have travelled from EDI a few times recently and you have the BA lounge on the way to gate 4 or the “new” Aspire lounge in the new area upstairs between gates 11 and 15.

Early in the morning the lounge is fairly quiet and gets busier throughout the day as it is the only third party lounge open at the moment.

Hot food is back and self-service is back for the food. Hot drinks and the soft drinks are self-service, with alcoholic drinks served from the bar.

Still a nice lounge space though.

  • Mark says:

Off topic, but any recommendations for a cheese subscription club? Looking for a monthly delivery of assorted artisan cheese, with the option to buy more if my taste buds are excited.

    • JDB says:

      https://www.finecheese.co.uk/

I don’t have a subscription (which they offer), but regularly buy cheese from them. They have a very wide and interesting selection and everything I have bought has arrived in good condition. It’s expensive but so is all good artisan cheese.

    • Reeferman says:

I’ve used WelshCheeseCompany (dotcodotuk) for regular ad-hoc purchases. Some terrific cheeses – but it’s all down to individual taste, of course.,

    • Mel T says:

The Cheese Shed (dotcom) did our wedding cake ( yes I do like cheese a lot) – really good selection of cheeses from the West Country region and they do a subscription. Worth a look?

  • Pete M says:

OT: For Itsu fans out there – they have a (newish) app with a loyalty function now. Spend over £5 7 times and you get anything from Itsu free, including the £10 sushi platters. Decent-ish return!
