We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Have been offline for a while so not up to speed with recent postings.

I trust it’s a known issue for those who’ve have the Creation letter cancelling their IHG card(s) on 3 Dec haven’t had their earned points swept over to the Rewards Club account?

Related: was there an enhanced earning rate of points for foreign spend?

Unrelated: I have a BA e-voucher which I recently tried to apply to a booking but the site repeatedly refused to accept the surname & reference on the voucher which was in the email in front of me. Twitter “support” say the only way to use it in future is to phone reservations – any thoughts how to get around this?

    • Anna says:

Re the points, people have been told that they won’t get them, or that it’s a glitch and they will get them, and someone has even been given cash compo so it’s far from clear what Creation’s intentions are. It might be worth flicking back over the past few days chat pages if you have the time and the inclination!

BA voucher – some can only be redeemed by calling or emailing BA holidays, what does it contain, exactly?

      • ChrisC says:

Does the evoucher start 125-2 or 125-4?

125-4 are useable online. 125-2 need a call to use

        No way around this.

        • @mkcol says:

          Yep it’s a 125-4xxxxxxxxx voucher.

Guess I can always lodge a complaint online then go from there.

      • @mkcol says:

Thanks, as below it’s a 125-4xxxxxxxxx voucher so ought to be able to be redeemed online. Nevermind I’ll just make a complaint.

As for Creation – I’ve sent them a simple query asking where the bonus points for foreign spend have gone & when they will be transferred to IHG Rewards Club. If I don’t get a satisfactory reply it’ll be formal complaint & prepared for FOS complaint if no resolution.

    • @mkcol says:

To clarify I was trying to use the BA e-voucher on a flight only booking at point of booking online.

      • BlueHorizonUK says:

Sometimes its the surname of the other passenger on the booking (if it was originally for more than 1 person)

    • David says:

If you have the black IHG card, foreign spend attracts 4 points per pound. This is standard and not an offer (they did have an offer for Sept where they waived – in practice credited back – foreign usage fees). Think the Marriott card had a bonus points offer though.

It’s a bit of a jump to describe the apparent balance write offs as compo as the two (?) people that reported this seemed bemused as to why this had been done, i.e. it wasn’t clear whether this was by accident or design and if the latter, they weren’t given any real explanation from Creation?

      • @mkcol says:

        Yes the black card.
Thanks I had 4/£ in my head, which is why I’d put 2 ViaRail tickets on The Canadian through it instead of elsewhere.

      • Anna says:

One of the posters said that Creation told them that the balance write off was to compensate for the loss of points and free night, or at least that’s how I read it.

    • Steve says:

I remember some comments that vouchers had been tagged behind the scenes to the name of another passenger from the original booking, even differing from the name shown on the voucher e-mail. Have you tried a fellow passenger’s surname to see if that works (assuming there was a different surname)?

      • @mkcol says:

        Urgh

There were 8 others on the booking to JER.

        • Anna says:

Trying 8 times online is nothing compared with trying to get through to BA on the phone at the moment!

      • Lady London says:

There was a bug in the booking system at the time, for some strange reason I think the last name entered on a multiseat booking of around 5 or more pax, ended up as the lead passenger sometimes

  • BP says:

Datapoint. Just had another Marriott BRG approved for Dubai. This time for Le Meridien next to the airport. Half board for £112. Ideal before our 7:30am flight. I was planning Jumeirah Creekside but this is too good a deal.

    • Gareth says:

Sorry maybe daft question what’s a BRG?

      • TGLoyalty says:

Best rate guarantee – if you find a better rate than Marriott direct on like for like terms they’ll they either give you points OR beat the better rate by 25% (usually always best to use this option unless it’s a cheap stay)

    • Pauline says:

Hi who did you compare with?

  • Benilyn says:

Curve Metal CDW – do you need to book with the Curve card?

  • Shaw West says:

Flying Virgin in a couple of days. Will the car hire buses drop off at the Upper Wing? Would it be easier to drive to the upper wing, checkin and drop of the Car?

Plenty of luggage to manage. So would be ideal if check in and then drop off would work.

    • John says:

Buses cannot drop at Upper Wing.
I try family/luggage off at Upper Wing and then drop car.
Bus then drops you at normal check in and you check in at Upper desk.
Once tried getting a taxi from car hire drop off – waited over an hour !!

    • AL says:

Uber will drop you, though – get one from a local hotel etc and they’ll drop you at the UC wing just as if you were using their Add Lees.

      • Shaw West says:

Thanks guys. Luggage wouldn’t fit an Uber 🙁 So I think I will drop off OH, drop off the car, take the bus and check in myself as John suggested

  • mart says:

If book using a 241 companion voucher in business class, then later want to upgrade to first using avios. Does the companion voucher on the existing booking allow you to effectively upgrade 2 for the price of 1?

  • Pete1968 says:

I bet the Londoner carless are laughing: £1.47/ litre (diesel) down here today.

Good job I get my Mozzers 18% discount, I bet some people with more multiples than Amex + Virgin are doing better.

    • Mike says:

I just paid 1.59 for super diesel 10 mins ago – £150 a week on fuel at the moment

      • Pete1968 says:

18% discount would make that £1.30/ litre – I hope you got in 🙂

    • TGLoyalty says:

I pay just under 16p per KWH …

    • Roy says:

OTOH have you looked at the value of your car? May depend on how desirable your make/model is, but s/h prices have gone through the roof. Combination of a shortage of new cars (due to the chip shortage) and perhaps also increased demand due to people shunning public transport during the pandemic.

      • Pete1968 says:

yes – my ‘worthless’ badass Toyota 4WD (it’s pretty old, maybe could have got £1K for it last year) – is now worth about £8K.

I like it, so keeping it, just got the MOT renewal.

        • Polly says:

My old Volvo C70 is20 yrs old in feb and still going strong. Had someone literally offer to buy it from me last week in the high store. Nuts.

    • Ryan says:

21% via Admiral Rewards / AT and VS+

Very nice knowing you’re getting fuel at a huge discount

  • LessCleverAndrew says:

Apologies if this has already been asked but is there any way to attest a day 2 lateral flow test result with Randox apart from using their Randox Certifly app?

    • Pete1968 says:

Sure – you can do it all online, standard PC.

      • Roy says:

You sure? The email I got from Randox said I *had* to use the app. (And the Android app was an APK I had to download – not on the Play Store yet, I guess. I bet this is going to confuse a lot of non-techie customers.)

        • Pete1968 says:

We did Randox several times, my wife used the app for her & the younger kids I guess but I was purely PC (+ my elder son).

I don’t like apps/ mobiles etc as big PC + 27″ monitor + mouse + big keyboard is so much faster.

Plus you can see what you’re doing.

  • Chrisasaurus says:

Anyone know how Craig got on yesterday in the rain?

    • Pete1968 says:

Thanks for the motivation earlier, managed to get round the Lincoln 10k swim. By far the worst weather I’ve ever run in, it was wet until 7k then the heavens really opened. The irony was the sun coming out and a rainbow as I walked back to the car!!

1:14:22, 10 minutes quicker than 2 years ago and 8 minutes slower than my PB.

    • Lyn says:

He posted afterwards in yesterday’s chat.

    • Craig says:

Thanks for asking, still alive and was actually a great atmosphere. Flew to Lanzarote and back today, just what I needed, 9 hours sat down with no room to stretch!
