HfP news: new office, new (old) staff

Today is my first day back at work after ten days away, and I’ll be heading somewhere new.

From today, Head for Points is based in the iconic 1 Poultry building, directly above Bank station. Our neighbours include the Bank of England, The Ned, Bloomberg and the Royal Exchange.

Architecture fans will know it as one of the few postmodern buildings in the UK (and one of the youngest listed buildings), whilst food fans will know it for the Coq d’Argent restaurant on the roof.

We spent just under four years in Moor Place at Moorgate, but took advantage of a favourable break clause to leave as soon as covid hit. Rhys and I have spent most of 2021 hot desking, primarily in Victoria, but we wanted our own dedicated office again. We also needed somewhere we could send our online shopping orders ….

We are also delighted to welcome Sinead back from maternity leave. She will oversee the commercial side of the site, effectively becoming the trade ‘face’ of HfP as far as marketing and promotions are concerned.

Rhys – who has done an excellent job in covering for Sinead for nine months, especially as he came into it with no marketing experience – will now go back to focusing on editorial. He will also oversee special projects, including the long promised forum, social media management and events.

The net effect of all this is that I can hopefully do a little less writing (my name has been on 90% of the content published this year) and have a bit more time for strategy and stuff – or checking out the restaurant on the roof, which is included in the Amex Platinum £200 cashback offer ….

Rob great news – are you going to do a review piece on Sandy Lane

    • Rob says:

Might do, might not. I will cover the Fairmont though as that is Accor.

  • JandeW says:

Good luck in the new office to you all!

  • MariaJ says:

    Congrats! Great news!

  • MD says:

Congratulations on the move. Coq d’Argent is a lovely spot for a drink on the roof terrace on a summer’s evening. Why not see if you can do a deal with them to take over the whole restaurant for the HfP summer party? 🙂

    • Lady London says:

Have they put a fence on that balcony yet at the Coq d’Argent? I gather a couple of people fell off it there.

I still mourn the Mappin & Webb that used to be on the corner ground floor there. It was ‘Old City’. All gone.

But at least you’ve got Tesco (and grrr the rather nice shops in the Royal Exchange).

      • Lady London says:

PS Wonder if the other travel bloggers hang out in such luxurious premises?

        • MD says:

Yikes, really? Didn’t know that. Better not tell my acrophobic other half if Rob does hire it for the summer party then…

And I very much doubt it – but then we expect nothing but the best from Rob 😉

      • JDB says:

If you want ‘old City’ there is still Sweetings round the corner, or the Old Dr Butler’s Head!

  • L Allen says:

Congrats on the office move, and welcome back Sinead!

Welcome to the ‘hood. My top cheap and cheerful lunchtime tip is Porterhouse Butchers’ deli at Watling Street which does the best baguettes for a fiver in a 5 mile radius. Deli Box at Cheapside does great curries for a similar price.

Obviously plenty of upmarket spots to choose from, but I’d favour Brigadiers and Madison out of the lot. Sweetings also an institution…

    • Rob says:

It’s been my hood since 1994, albeit with a few years over at More London inbetween.

I was in The Ned two weeks ago and got chatting to one of the managers in the lift – she couldn’t believed I’d actually used the building when it used to be Midland Bank (the investment bank staff used to walk up from Lower Thames St to use the staff restaurant, because we didn’t have one).

      • George K says:

I should have known better! I’ve only ever known the old Midland Bank headoffice to be shut during my early London years, as I seem to recall they moved to Canary Wharf in… 2001?

Must be weird revisiting the old haunt under a new guise.

Th queue outside the butchers on Watling Street a couple of weeks ago was a sight to behold – and definitely suggested that things were getting back to normal.

In terms of top picks nearby, I would have to give a shout out to the Merchant House Bar. Delighted to see it survived the pandemic.

      • chabuddy geezy says:

My favourite lunch spot around there is Assenheims on Great Tower Street.

    • Patrick says:

For those near Barons court, go for HG Walters, it was our go to place when living in the area 🙂
Much better than Porterhouse if my taste buds recall correctly

  • Oh! Matron! says:

If you’ve not done https://www.londonmithraeum.com/ it’s across the road from you under the Bloomberg building. It’s thoughtfully done, and fascinating that, even 2000 years ago, there were cults! You’ll be able to do it in a lunch break, and it’s free

    • Bagoly says:

… but has (or had to) be booked some time in advance.

      • ADS says:

it’s usually not busy – so if you forget to book in advance, you can just book it online on your phone there and then !

        a great little escape

    • Rhys says:

I have, it’s great! Although the light-smoke experience wasn’t on the last time I went due to covid/

  • mr_jetlag says:

Waving hello at you from Becket House (the Mercers’ building) across the road!
