We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • Pete C says:

Morning all, does anyone know the cancellation/flexibility policy with regards to UUA? Can I pay £35 to get the Avios and cash for the upgrade element back, and then apply for a FTV for the base fare?

  • Alex says:

Does anyone else find AMEX offers slow lately?

AMEX Travel, no email and the offer still saved after 3 days. Same for the Amazon offer.

    • James says:

Email confirmations are not sent anymore. Morrisons offer is extremely slow

    • Mick S says:

I’m finding the annual renewal bonus points for the Gold card are slow to post. In the past they have posted within a few days. I know the small prints says upto 60 days, but next weekend will actually be the full 60 days. Never experienced it this slow before.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Always taken until atleast first statement after passing the years for the 10k bonus to post.

    • Js says:

Ye, Its been taking longer lately

  • WaynedP says:

What happened to the piece on Virgin Atlantic discounts on travel bookings to South Africa in yesterday’s “Bits” article ?

    • Rob says:

Virgin emailed to say that the offer had been scrapped at the last minute (they just hadn’t bothered to tell us).

      • WaynedP says:

Oh dear, that’s a bit of an oversight on their part.

Hadn’t checked website yet, as was looking to use your link so that HfP could get any recognition.

You might want to remove the article from the “Virgin Atlantic and Flying Club” category, seeing as it now contains no reference to either.

Possibly an offer postponed, not cancelled, otherwise an indication of healthy traveller demand for flights to ZA.

VS call centre slick as anything this morning.
Needed an open jaw, booked with points, and upgraded using CC voucher. Answered phone in 21 mins, completed booking after 27 mins. Even though I had to be handed from standard to upper class team member.

    Pretty impressive.

  • davef says:

Does anyone have experience using the dedicated BA carhire website? The discounts are pretty impressive.
It doesn’t ask me during a test booking for my BAEC number so how do they know what status you have? Do they ask on pickup?
I’ll be silver when I collect but the gold discounts are huge.

    • Jen T says:

Never been asked to provide evidence of my status or membership – pre-COVID, I probably rented 8-10 times a year with Avis using that website. There is always a risk that they charge you the full rate. The only time I have chosen to show them my BA Executive Club card is when they try to charge me for the additional driver (free with membership).

  • Greenpen says:

Sorry as I know the answer must be here somewhere, but if I have spent £11,000 on the blue BA Amex and upgrade to the black, will the 241 be triggered immediately based on that being over the £10,000 requirement for the new black card?

    • C says:

Yes though there are reports of people only being issued with a voucher with 1 year validity (18 months currently) rather than the 2 year one. The upgrade application page says this might happen too and you should contact BA to ‘discuss extension’ – any data points recently on whether the extension is always granted? Hopefully so but the wording sounds a bit like it may be handled with discretion! I’m in the same boat and want to upgrade to get the better voucher. Understand it is better to upgrade before spending 10k but hey ho. Also wondering whether I should do this before the 13th Nov outage or after?!

    • Rob says:

      Yes

  • NP says:

I had booked some BA flights only to Dubai, but I now want to switch it to a BA holiday. Does anyone know if can call up to cancel the flights for a voucher and immediately book the holiday over the phone?

  • pigeon says:

Already hold Amex Gold, want to get basic BA Amex too. Do I get the sign up bonus? Website says “I understand I will not be eligible for any Welcome Bonus award if I hold or have held any personal American Express Cards in the past 24 months.” whereas for the premium plus it says “I understand I will not be eligible for any Welcome Bonus award if I hold or have held any personal British Airways American Express Card product in the past 24 months.” Reckon it’s just a typo but not sure!

    • pigeon says:

Ah never mind, found the answer!

    • Youllnever says:

No typo – the terms are correct for both.

    • Rob says:

It’s NOT a typo. If you’re willing to pay £250, Amex is willing to give you a bonus. If you’re just after some free points from a free card, you can clear off!

      • pigeon says:

The free points would be nice, but I’m really after a second card to split personal and expenses spending (to make sure I don’t forget to claim anything! Especially foreign spend fees which need to be claimed separately in my system).

        • memesweeper says:

Get the premium Amex, hold until you have obtained your £ 250 of value, and then downgrade?

Alternatively, get a second Gold card in your own name, just for expenses. You can generate a separate spending report just for that supplementary card.
