We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Darko, I can’t see the point of testing any more. Covid is nearly endemic now, all our kids have had it or near enough. They’ve got the antibodies. So have we all.

Most of us adults and nearly all the oldies have been vaccinated and we’re now getting the boosters.

Nobody old-ish is dying who wouldn’t have been dying anyway apart from the unvaccinated (and I’m not exactly sympathetic where the anti-vaxxers are concerned, make bed & lie in it springs to mind).

It’s rapidly becoming no worse than the common cold.

    • Pete1968 says:

      sorry, reply to Darko above

    • Andrew H says:

150 to 200 a day don’t die from the common cold.

We don’t vaccinate for the common cold.

It’s way worse than the common cold. It’s still worse than flu.

      • Pete1968 says:

You’re double-counting – well, not you – the authorities. The deaths are mostly either Covid-19 related – agreed, eg complications such as pneumonia etc – or else dying of something else anyway and they happened to have Covid at the same time.

Like my Grandpa died WITH prostate cancer but he didn’t die from it.

Most other countries don’t count the same way as UK.

        • Alan says:

Excess deaths is the only way to establish whether more people are dying due to Covid or whether they would have genuinely died of something else anyway. Whilst this figure isn’t exact, it’s the best method of seeing the impact of Covid.
Of course, the other issue is that of hospital beds being used up by Covid patients. Our local NHS Trust is really struggling. Day patient wards have been converted to Covid wards meaning that day patient treatments simply aren’t being done.
Covid is still having a serious affect in the UK despite antibodies and vaccinations.

Its interesting to see that the area with the highest levels of Covid (the south west) is also the area that was getting the false results from the lab in Wolverhampton. Of course, this could be a coincidence or it could actually be a link between the testing regime and helping to keep case numbers down (and pressures off of hospitals)

      • Yuff says:

The world didn’t close down for the common cold…….
The majority who are vaccinated will be ok, I agree with Pete……get on with everything, sick of media hysteria about overworked nhs staff when they won’t see patients….
Covid suits them when they want to hide behind their desks but not when they want a huge pay rise…..cake and eating it springs to mind

        • Jeff Greene says:

          “ get on with everything,”

Everything has been open for months m8. Not sure what you’re still crying about

    • James says:

Nope there are more double vaccinated in hospitals than unvaxxed. Stop making rubbish up

      • Jek says:

90% of COVID patient on ITU are not vaccinated.

James, of course the majority of patients in hospitals are vaccinated because the majority of the population is vaccinated: correlation is not causation.

        • Jeff Greene says:

“ James, of course the majority of patients in hospitals are vaccinated because the majority of the population is vaccinated: correlation is not causation.”

You’re overestimating the mathematical abilities of the general population. Even with your clear explanation many will struggle to understand

      • Pete1968 says:

        data? evidence?

you don’t have any, do you?

  • Liam says:

@AirlineFlyer on Twitter has highlighted that there are some BA LGW–JFK flights loaded into the schedule but no one knows why.

    https://www.flightradar24.com/data/flights/ba2273

    Doesn’t seem like it’s cargo.

  • Super Secret Stuff says:

How many of the HfP crowd got tickets to the BST / Adele festival?

Also anyone know if its worth going to the Amex garden? Me and the OH will be in the ALL area as that appears to be where to disabled viewing platform is

    • Youllnever says:

Me and my friends are – 6 people in total in the GC area. Didn’t shell out extra for the Amex garden so can’t say. Tickets all sold out now.

      • Super Secret Stuff says:

Nice, can’t believe we got tickets tbh. I thought the amex garden was a free thing?

        • Youllnever says:

According to the BST website, only diamond VIP tickets and higher seem to have access to it.

    • Pete1968 says:

      I’m a Pete

    • Rich says:

Shrödinger’s runway is never dead. It’s both planned and deferred. Nobody knows until they try to land on it.

      • Paul says:

Herr Shrödinger seems busy at the moment. IHG points and vouchers, BA customer service, FTV valuations, Gatwick BA routes, COVID cases……

    • Andrew H says:

      However… it’s the Telegraph.

  • Shaw West says:

Anyone had luck with Europcar oneway rental recently? I keep getting “Sorry, an error occurred, please try again or contact us.”. Oneway rental is not avbl when we call the contact centre

    • Andrew H says:

Enterprise does one way, and seems to be a lot cheaper than Europcar.

    • Princess says:

I got the same, tried many times and even reach out to them with the contact form.. They just replied it is something they don’t control. It was so useful!!!!

    • xcalx says:

It was working about 3 week ago I had a booking for next week that I cancelled a few days ago. I have tried to book again for a new date but getting the same error message.

  • Andrew H says:

How does the overall price compare with Enterprise? If the base price is much higher, one way surcharge of £1 isn’t a bargain…

    • Pete1968 says:

      It’s £1 and that’s all you pay

      • Andrew H says:

£1 *total* for car hire? Must be part of some other deal/membership/points redemption etc as no one can make money hiring a car for £1.

        • Andrew H says:

Ok, I get it now. Surely not very likely to give you a hire time that fits with plans, more the other way round…

          • Pete1968 says:

You’d be surprised. They want people to drive cars back to Heathrow for £1 hire.

            Cheaper than the low-loader.

Sure – you pay the diesel/ petrol.

        • Rob says:

You do if it is a one-way repositioning rental and the alternative is the rental company hiring a car transporter.

  • N says:

Silly question – I have to do a PCR test to enter Dubai within 72 hours of departing from London. If my flight is at 8.30pm on Friday, the earliest I can do the test is Tuesday after 8.30pm. If I do a postal PCR test, how will they know I’ve done it within 72 hours of the flight?

    • Louise K says:

Double check that Dubai doesn’t want an in-person test.

I booked my boss a test on Wednesday morning for a Friday night departure.

      • N says:

Thanks, I checked and looks like they just want a pre departure PCR test within 72 hours of the departing flight
