We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Question re Finnair “Economy Light” flights, as a BAEC Silver. Looking to buy some super cheap tickets but they don’t include a checked bag.

Does my status give me and my partner a checked bag? Or is this equivalent to a BA HBO fare where I literally have to buy the suitcase (priced at £100 each way!).

    Any input appreciated – thanks.

    • Andrew says:

BA is the only One World airline not to offer a free bag when you have a hand baggage only ticket and Silver/Sapphire status or above. It even specifies this on the One World website status benefits page. Finnair also offer a complimentary drink from the buy-on-board selection to status passengers on short-haul economy – this includes the small bottles of champagne and is for you+1. Now if only BA treated us like that!

£100 amazon giftcard for Halifax customers taking out life insurance. Pays out within 30 days of third £5/m minimum premium. Available at online accounts and within the app.

    • BJ says:

Probably also at all other LBG sites and apps.

      • Sloth says:

        Yup also via Lloyds

        • Pete1968 says:

My O/H & I both got this already (Halifax) – a simple 10 minute process to apply – but you can only apply on mobile/ tablet, not desktop (unless you have an emulator, I suppose).

So £200 of Amazon credit for £30 – plus life insurance included for 3 months.

  • BJ says:

Sorry if covered already but there is up to 15% off available on Iberia giftcards, just Google the key words to bring up the page.

    • Matt says:

Anyone used one of these before? Specific question is can they be used for taxes on redemptions? Dollar denominated too… how much of the 15% are they recouping via FX?

    • Jonathan says:

I got the email as well

      • Matt says:

I didn’t get email. Googled following BJ’s post. I can’t see any mention of exclusions for taxes but…

  • Can says:

Is there any way to save or get miles for National Trust memberships?

    • BJ says:

Just a hunch but check if National Trust Scotland membership is cheape and if it will cover all UK.

    • Ron says:

I’ve never worked out a way to get any further discount or extra Avios. Only thing is don’t set up a direct debit and pay by credit card every year.

      • Can says:

My problem is that there is a lot places I wanted to re/join after the lockdowns: Key Gardens, Nat Trust etc and they really pile up :))

    • Genghis says:

If a higher / additional rate tax payer, get some tax back on part of the membership (tax return if fill out already or through tax code if don’t)

    • Tracey says:

Join National Trust New Zealand, cheaper than the UK but gives you access to the same properties.

      • stevenhp1987 says:

        Doesn’t include parking though?

      • Pete1968 says:

But no free parking included (NZ membership) where the local carpark enforcers like to see the UK NT windscreen sticker. In practice, I don’t think you’d face any penalty or other parking charge if you show the membership were you to be challenged.

  • Joints&Piles says:

May be old news but Jurys Rewards now has Virgin Wines as a redemption partner.

  • Shaw West says:

Is there a tax element to upgrade virgin from PE to UC? Is it better to buy a cheaper PE ticket and upgrade to a UC ?

    • ChrisC says:

There won’t be any proper government taxes to pay but there will be additional VS carrier surcharges

Do some dummy bookings for PE and UC and that will give you a good indication of the additional costs.
