We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

On the Platinum £400/£100 travel offer – a welcome double MR points also posted. Perhaps that’s always been a thing that I had forgotten – been quite a few years since I’ve booked with them.

  • Chrism20 says:

    Airtime promo “SCAIRTIME”

Spend £5 before midnight Saturday for £1

Limited to 1000, posted on Facebook about ten minutes ago

  • Sammy says:

What’s the current referral bonus (for one who refers) on the free BA Amex card?

  • vlcnc says:

Does anyone know if the welcome bonus status bar on the Amex App is accurate? I have Gold Card and have around 2800 membership rewards but the bar is saying I have to still spend over £600 when surely should only be about 200?

    • PMG says:

You might have got double MR on some spend?

    • QFFlyer says:

Depends whether you’ve spend £2,800 – just because you’ve earned 2,800 MR doesn’t mean you have, you could have bonus points in that number. But yes, it’s usually accurate ime.

  • Safety Card says:

Has anyone had any experience recently with wifi on the Virgin A350’s. Is it going to be strong enough to stream podcasts /netflix?

    • ChrisC says:

I’d be downloading the things you want to watch / listen to before the flight.

Airlines often either restrict access to streaming sites full stop or throttle them plus it simply may not be wirking the day of your flight.

    • Roy says:

The only in flight wifi services I’ve encountered that are fast enough for streaming have had tiered pricing where you pay a premium for the faster services.

I think generally the really fast in-flight wi-fi is using ground-based relay stations rather than satellites (although I’m sure fast satellite connectivity will come). Obviously, ground-based relay stations have limited range, so the geographic coverage of such systems is limited (and notably doesn’t include oceans).

  • His Holyness says:

What’s a Miles and More mile worth? A ticket I paid £100 for ending up earning me 5000 award miles. Is that actually profitable?

    • Guernsey Globetrotter says:

Probably around a penny a mile so there’s at least £50 value there, which is certainly disproportionately good for a £100 flight. Share the scheme pls!

      • Jonathan says:

Refer to most recent earning article for Miles and More that the HfP team posted

You won’t normally earn that many points from a ticket not costing much

    • marcw says:

I think Miles&More had a promo over the summer/autumn/winter with a bunch of extra miles

      • His Holyness says:

Only status miles. Thanks for the info, I thought I’d done well 😉

  • LS says:

    Freedom of information response time!!
Possibly badly worded request, but it looks like NS&I did not exert pressure on curve to stop deposits.

I have followed up asking for any communication on the subject, regardless of whether they ‘exerted pressure’ or not.

    ====
Thank you for your email of 1 October 2021, requesting information about any communications exerting pressure on financial providers who allow users to invest in NS&I products with a credit card.

Firstly, I should explain that NS&I has a policy of not allowing deposits from our customers that are identified as being sourced from credit cards. Any deposits that have been accepted and later found to have been sourced from a credit card is an issue between NS&I and our customers only.

In view of this, please find detailed below the response to your specific requests.

Please provide any communication between yourselves and curve regarding this matter.

There has been no pressure exerted in any communications with Curve and therefore I can confirm in accordance with section 1 (1) of the FOIA that no information is held about this.

Please provide latest briefing or summary created by/for your executive team regarding this matter.

There has been no advice or discussion related to ‘exerting pressure on financial providers’ in any briefing presented to our executive team and therefore I can confirm in accordance with section 1 (1) of the FOIA that no information is held about this.

    • Andrew says:

Curve is over, accept it and move on.

      • LS says:

No doubt. But this isnt about that. I am interested to know what went on behind the scenes (and for how long) before it died…

        • Sandgrounder says:

          My guess what went on:
Creation are losing money from the IHG contract but can’t walk away just yet.
Creation looked for ways to cull the most expensive customers.
Creation got rid of the bulk of the MS crew by doing a trawl for Curve use.
Gold rush over. Gravy train derailed etc etc
If only everyone would have stuck to Bendy and Solihull none of this would have happened 🙂

    • JDB says:

It would appear you may have asked the wrong question and/or didn’t consider there might have been an intermediary! The response, as you would expect, is carefully worded. You will have observed from all the changes to T&Cs etc. the whole issue the cash advances/disguised debit cards etc. has been discussed at an industry level rather than between individual parties. Tesco Bank stirred all this up a long time ago when they started charging fees on all Curve transactions, which was around the time Curve agreed to transmit MCC codes, causing Tesco to reverse its decision.

      • Anuj says:

That’s my suspicion too, they will not include stuff that may be revelant but that doesn’t fall under an FOI, it isn’t a public service to them it’s more of a public burden.

  • CF Frost says:

Bound not to be only to have been only person left scratching head here, and doubtless solved here in chat x1000, but the gov.uk advice for kids (who are, obvs, unvaccinated) and who return to the UK is a little vague and leaves it open with a mention of their having to take a 2-day test. Doesn’t specify which. If you are to follow the logic that are unvaccinated, this would spell PCR. But then again, how could they be vaccinated yet, it surely would be specified if so, and the blighters don’t quarantine – so lat flow is ok? Pedantic I know but wife will not believe me.
