We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Did I read here that Virgin are being very slow with credit card approvals? For the fee-free FX card I their site said I was approved subject to ID checks but it’s been a week since they emailed saying they’ll be in touch within 5 working days. I’ve got a long work trip coming up soon and would be nice to not have to front all the expenses with cash.

Took me almost 2 weeks to be approved (called and checked) and still waiting for card to arrive…

    Booked a car through SixT.
    Pay on collection.
When I got there I was told they had no cars available, but they could only offer me their apologies. They felt that because I had not paid yet, I didn’t have a firm booking (despite having a confirmation number and several automated emails from them relating to the booking).
After a few minutes of argument (including why hadn’t they bothered to contact me about lack of cars), they booked a car for me from a different branch. I was told to make my way there at my own expense.

    Couple of questions:
    1. Are they correct? Does a flexible pay on collection booking not guarantee you a car (any car hire firm, not specific to SixT)?
    2. Do you think I can somehow claim the taxi fare (nearly £40) through Amex Platinum car hire insurance? (I will obviously be writing a stern letter once I am done with the car).

    Thanks.

    • Roy says:

I’ve wondered about this before (fortunately it’s never happened to me, though).

My thinking is, that if the booking is so flexible that I can simply no-show, and there is no penalty whatsoever, then it would seem there has been no consideration on my part, and therefore a contract cannot exist under English law. Any deposit or no-show fee – even a nominal £1 – would change that, though.

Contact Sixt Head Office while you.still have the car. I’d expect a minimum of costs to get to the other pickup plus a discount for your time and frustration. This feels like 50% off the bill. I think you may have landed a rogue franchisee.

Technically I think hirecar companies can do this to you but I wouldn’t take it lying down. Does travel insurance or card insurance cover this, I wonder?

My Welsh covid vaccine cert has two QR codes, one for each jab. The form for re-entering the UK (The 48hr one) specifically states to only upload forms with one QR.
What to do? I can’t be the only Welsh resident returning to the UK.

    • Rhys says:

You should check my response to your first comment 🙂

    • ChrisC says:

Upload the code for the 2nd jab.

    • Anna says:

Get the covid pass (if applicable in Wales) and upload that one?

    • Andrew says:

The England cert has 2 codes too – scan the second dose code.

    • Phil says:

Last time I tried, the PLF website wouldn’t scan either of my QR codes – so I’d recommend downloading a PDF that you can access and upload – just in case.

Appears to be some clarity on BA ticket validity process with this post from a week last Friday. Don’t think this has been picked up here

    https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/33646518-post203.html

“On tickets that havent been reissued it will be 1 year from the original date of issue for the ticket.
On any tickets that have been reissued it will be 1 year from the date the reissue was completed.
As before on part flown tickets ticket validity will be 1 year from the date the outbound was flown.”

I had a ticket reissued last week due to a rebook after a cancellation.

After seeing the above post I checked and the ticket number changed so my clock for that booking runs 12 months from last week not the original booking date.

I hadn’t appreciated that you were given a new ticket number in these circumstances. Need to update my spreadsheets with my bookings on! Also a good idea to keep all emails relating to changes.

25% off 6 at ASDA again. It’s getting to be like the Sweaty Betty of wine.

  • Manny_D says:

Those who have taken out a new Platinum recently, have you been able to change the annual fee payment to a monthly one?

If so was there anything in particular you said to get this done?

    • TGLoyalty says:

Im not sure it’s a special offer. I just said I was looking to go monthly billing as I heard you could and they said yeah sure.

    • Adam says:

Give them a call. Its very easy to set up.

    • Louise K says:

Yes, I did. Quite easy to sort out over chat.

Had to pay the £575 on the first statement but that has since been credited.

  • John says:

Just received IHG points from creation for this month. No closure letter, used curve but no MS.

    • Magic Mike says:

There seems to be a £1 booking fee with Virgin so need to be spending more than about 40 quid for that to be worthwhile for the points…
