We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Apologies in advance as a bit late on this and couldn’t find a clear answer on best course of action for IHG Black Card cancellation.

I’ve been issued with the cancellation and have used my IHG card through curve, mainly out of convenience, but with no MS. Anniversary is July and I’ve already spent the £10k and so naturally disappointed with losing the annual fee plus the free night.

To be honest the fee doesn’t bother me providing I get the free night as I’ve been able to get enhanced value over the last few years. Equally, if I lose the free night then in principle I’d expect at least a pro-rata refund to Dec 3rd cancellation.

Does anyone have a similar situation and what is the process of chasing Creation and is it even worth it?

    TIA – Michael

Call up, ask what happens about free night voucher.

Get scripted “you won’t get your voucher or pro-rata refund” response.

      File formal complaint.

That’s as far as I know anyone has gotten thus far. The more formal complaints are made the more likely that they will back down as it would be costly for them if we go via FOS afterwards.

+1. I cancelled one of our booked free nights so I could get a screenshot while re-booking showing that it could be used at a very expensive hotel, alongside the cash prices. Unlike the Ambassador free night, the cc free night voucher needs to be unredeemed to check this. I think it’s important to show exactly how valuable this was in case Creation tries to say it’s only worth £150 or something.

        • stevenhp1987 says:

I have taken a similar screenshot for my Paris Kimpton free night last week! Was going for ~ €500 a night!

          • Anna says:

Ha – Kimpton Seafire is £711 pn night (not to mention $85 resort fee!!) during our visit next July, and that’s in low season. But I think it might be easier to argue for a date when we have booked a holiday at the destination so it doesn’t look as though we just picked a random very expensive hotel!

Paying off Brighton with Bendy. Never done it before, and am wondering: a) whether to do this or not, b) which cards play nicely with it and c) whether repercussions from Brighton are more likely than underlying cards (or both).

I have VA+ card and a couple of US CC. I could also use Che in the middle if it reduces risks, though I still wonder if Brighton would get upset.

    Any thoughts?

    • Anna says:

I think VA will charge you for any such transactions. If Brighton gets upset they simply decline so you will know. Bendy not really worth the fee, IMO, whichever way you incur it.

    • Tariq says:

I use bendy metal with Hong Kong for this.

    • Reney says:

I have been very reluctant to use my US CC with curve after all the Creation cancellation as I won’t be able to open them again if they are closed as no longer a resident.

  • Rebecca says:

Does anyone know if the TAP status match is still running? The page isn’t found, though it was there a couple of weeks ago..

    • Ikaz says:

I applied in June when it was still active and still haven’t heard back from TAP…

  • Russel says:

If you cancel your amex, how long do you need to wait until you apply for exact same card? (Understanding you don’t get bonus)

    • TGLoyalty says:

As long as you feel happy … there’s no set criteria

      • Paul Pogba says:

Does this work with BAPP; if I earn a 241 cancel the card and then a month or so later regret my decision, can I apply again and get another 241 in the same year?

        • TGLoyalty says:

Yup you can earn an unlimited number. But doing it every month might piss Amex off

    • Guernsey Globetrotter says:

As a data point, I got the Platinum Personal card in January for a referral / SUB earning and also the £200 Waitrose shopping offer. I then cancelled in March as I couldn’t justify the annual fee… re-applied last month because I wanted the £200 dining offer and got accepted no problem. Have also been able to earn a few 24,000 MR referrals and will be cancelling again v. soon (unless they make a retention offer 🙂 )

  • FlightDoctor says:

QQ about GUF1. I have one that’s been extended and is now about to expire unless I redeem it. Am I correct that I can use it for ex-EU fares? Thinking of booking BCN or MAD to USA next year as prices seem good in J and we could save a little bit more by upgrading from W. Can I do this on the website or do I need to ring BA in the U.K. or Spain?

    • Chris says:

If its the GGL ones you can use them ex eu; or at least you could 2 years ago last time I did it.

    • H says:

Yes you can apply the GUF to an ex-EU itinerary. Probably best to book first then apply the GUF unless you can get through on the phone, it can error out or provide a higher fare than required online.

      • FlightDoctor says:

Yes I tried a dummy booking on line and it came in over twice as expensive. Thanks for the tip.

  • JC says:

For those with a IHG Creation Card – In October, between the 9-14th there was an outage on the Creation App where if you made a payment to your credit card it wouldnt show until the evening of the 14th.

This made my monthly payment late (due on the 11th last month and paid on the 9th) and they charged me the interest for the full balance. Worth checking your statements – tbf they have reversed the interest after reminding them of their outage.

  • Clive says:

Could someone suggest a reasonable price RT PCR Test facility in London maybe around the Victoria area

  • Anna says:

Virgin cc newbie – does the app show the Flying Club points you’ve earned, and why are none of my transactions since Thursday showing?!

    • Jessica says:

      it shows up next month

    • stevenhp1987 says:

      There is no running total.

The flying club miles section in the app will update on your statement date showing how many you earned last month. It’ll also be on your statement.
