We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

    OK!

  • Blue Mountain says:

G’day all! Apologies if it has been answered before. The Amex Plat offer of “Get 100% back, up to £200”. Have people triggered the credit by purchasing online gift cards from the Ivy? TIA!

    • gareth says:

Won’t work, different processing system and they can see if you won’t have used a point of sale machine in a restaurant if you challenge it

      • Blue Mountain says:

Thanks for the reply, good to know. Would buying gift cards in the restaurant trigger the credit?

        • Andrew says:

No. Question is asked daily. It’s a different point of sale machine in the restaurant.

          • Blue Mountain says:

Thank you for replying again today.

          • David says:

Exaggeration there. Somewhat regularly not daily.

          • Brian W says:

Very over exaggerated from @Andrew as is often the case. Even if it was asked daily, which it isn’t, it’s irrelevant to the OP’s question which clearly irks @Andrew who replies as if everyone should know everything 🙄

  • Kumar says:

Have Amex stopped selling experiences on their travel website. I couldn’t find it on their site now. Earlier i used to purchase unlimited Dubai pass when they have travel spend offer on Amex Plat. spend 600 pay 400 .

    • Hannah D says:

      How much is the pass?

      • Kumar says:

My last purchase in Dec 2018 was 600 for 3 days (2Adults and 1 child) for unlimited Viator pass through Amex.

    • Flyoff says:

They appear to have been removed. I looked a few months ago and there were none available.

      • Paul says:

Yes I too looked a while back having bought in the past and found them seemingly gone.

  • Js says:

Does anyone know what is the best (cheapest) country of residence for car rental bookings?

    • Swiss Jim says:

Thinking of a fraudulent booking and having your insurance invalidated if you have a serious accident?

      • Jonathan says:

You’re not claiming to be resident in the country if you buy off Brazilian or Australian Hertz website.

I’ve done it many times & my address on the booking is always in the U.K. as well as providing a U.K. driving license.

You do need to be aware that country of sale will affect the insurance provided though. Eg. with U.S. POS they remove all insurance as you use your own car’s insurance policy to cover you driving a hire car. This obviously makes the price cheaper. If you read the T&C’s you will notice that in most states they give you the basic insurance free (which is then topped up with Amex Platinum) if you are an overseas resident. This is due to state laws ensuring rental co’s provide minimum coverage for all vehicles/drivers. The benefit is Hertz U.K. POS will charge you for the cover but Hertz USA POS won’t.

It’s all completely legal but you do need to understand what you are buying.

    • Andrew says:

      What a bizarre question

      • Rob says:

Very sensible question. I have saved over £1k over the years booking via Hertz Australia (which doesn’t ask for a home address at all).

  • Scott says:

Are the Premier Inns around Heathrow just a case of driving up and hoping for the best, parking wise?
Not sure whether just to park at a tube station (arriving 10pm on a Tuesday and leaving 9pm next day), or just drive to a hotel and pay the £12 there etc.

  • Aaron C says:

What’s the best Lufthansa lounge for Biz at Munich?

    • John says:

      The one that is open

    • Save East Coast Rewards says:

Just go to Airbrau, all Lufthansa business lounges are a bit depressing!

    • Phil W says:

Airbrau is the way forward if you are traveling lunchtime and beyond.

Not all the LH lounges are open at the moment, so I’d go for whichever one is closest to your departure gate. One thing we found at MUC and FRA recently was that using Amex Platinum we were able to access Senator Lounges. I think this is due to the reduced offering caused by Covid, we saw little difference between Senator and Business lounges.

  • Gary says:

Getting some J tickets LHR BKK for summer 2022. Swiss, Austrian, Lufthansa have reasonable prices for fully flex tickets, but seats on all three looked pretty mediocre which is fine. Hence want to see if any views/preferences on soft product pertaining to these three airlines?

Or should one just plunge for Thai direct with more restricted ticket terms for £500pp extra return?

Never flown with any of the four above so do mention if poor CS (eg one hour phone waits… etc) which would be major deterrent.

    • John says:

If happy to pay £500 extra I’d always choose Thai

    • BuildBackBetter says:

Given the fast changing covid situation and testing requirements, I’d choose an airline that’s flexible in ticket terms.
Have you looked at SQ? They’ve been adding a lot of flights recently and if not too expensive, I’d choose them. Vastly superior product and good customer service too.

    • Rob says:

Is Finnair still £1040 or has that finished by then?

      • Gary says:

Not anymore at least for our dates, but Finnair still the cheapest around. The day flights both directions are a killer (for us anyway)

    • Gareth says:

I booked a businessflex on LH (lH ANA , Cathay, LH) on LH website london to sydney rtn for sept 2022 , yes it was fully flexible and refundable, but turned out only class P not J. Dont care as it was only £3200 ,over grand cheaper than any other fully flex and refundable fare. So may not be J
