We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

    Avois -> Nectar -> Argos

Looking at purchasing an item in excess of £200 from Argos using converted Avios. Any recent reports of problems with my plan to buy multiple Argos gift cards in Sainsburys using Nectar Points and then making payment at Argos online?

I dont mind moving the Avios to Nectar because I can always then spend the points on food and use the cash saved to buy the item outright but that is a slow burn and I dont usually shop at Sainsbury’s. Gift cards are a lot easier if applicable.

Thanks in advance to the hive mind…..

  • John says:

Can someone please confirm that to visit Norway from England, I don’t need to do anything other than show vaccination proof? Is paper or app better?

And once there, no vaccine passports needed anywhere and masks voluntary? So pretty much like here but their case spike has dropped.

    • Mark says:

I asked the other day, but got shot down with “do your own research”.

      • Niall says:

You simply asked. John is asking for confirmation and demonstrating he has checked but just wants someone to confirm his understanding. Somewhere where a lot of questions are asked, this makes a difference.

  • Bach says:

My Amex referral link leads to an error today – amex chat has been useless – can someone confirms if their link is working (so something wrong with mine) or if it’s an issue with Amex application website?

  • TGLoyalty says:

Looks like the scariant reporting is having an effect … media will never learn.

#Morocco is to suspend flights from and to #UK from 23.59 Morocco time tonight, until further notice, in an effort to maintain its low infection rates. Flights also suspended to #Germany and #Netherlands . @ThePCAgency

    • John says:

I doubt Morocco based its decision on media reporting. Furthermore I don’t think the decision is because of the scariant (Ay4.2) but just generally high case numbers.

Ay4.2 is a subvariant of delta which is slightly more infectious than other subvariants. It has been prevalent in India and then the US for many months. The vaccines are effective against it.

As Morocco is only 57% fully vaccinated, this measure could be justified as an interim measure to slow infections until higher vaccination coverage is achieved. The counterargument could be that benefits of tourism are worth the potentially increased infections.

    • Anna says:

Low rates or low figures …?

    • David says:

      Scariants?!
Funny. Are you 5 years old or a covid denier, because that’s the language you’re using?

  • Aliks says:

How much extra will I pay to use an Amex card to pay an EUR100 bill compared to an FX free card such as MBNA?

Presumably I will pay EUR 2.70 Amex fees, but is there an FX surcharge on top of this.

Amex spend would be useful to hit a welcome bonus, but not if the fees are excessive

    • John says:

Where did you get 2.70 from? Isn’t it 2.99%?

The fees are the surcharge. The Amex rate is around 0.25%-0.75% worse than the interbank rate. MBNA is a Visa, right? Visa’s rates tend to be 0.5%-1% worse than interbank.

  • Jamie says:

I’m getting confused from people’s comments over rebooking a cancelled flight. Are BA still doing it 12 months from ticketing or original flight date? I am screwed if it’s ticketing again

    • Matt C says:

I just tried the same with a F cancelled booking from August this morning. You First insisted that I could only rebook based on the ticketing date and not the flight date. Reluctantly chose for a full refund of cash and avios.

      • GT says:

A BA agent told me at the weekend that the policy was changed again on 13 Oct back to 12 months from ticketing.

        • meta says:

Again total disregard for any laws and their made up rules which have no basis whatsoever. I’m tempted to take them to civil court next time it happens to me for failure to disclose EC261 rules to customers and if they wish to settle ask them to spell out in T&C for all tickets moving forward that EC261 rules override any of their T&Cs. If the regulators can’t force them, then I guess the consumers will have to at some point.

          • Grimz says:

So can you refuse to take the refund and then go to there legal department and then onto MCOL/CEDR? I have flights to reschedule later in November due to a cancelled flight and was told to call back before my outbound on the 27th November which I am going to do but I want to reschedule for November 4th 2022.

      • Anna says:

Were you not prepared to go to MCOL/CEDR?

  • Vit says:

Hello all, needs to travel from Norway into Scotland tomorrow. Anyone able to provide a quick list as what to do and any test required? I will have a look into the gov. website later but just trying to get a some idea before start searching. TIA.

    • Duncan says:

This site has all of the relevant info for Scotland: https://www.gov.scot/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-international-travel-quarantine/pages/overview/

Basically: complete a passenger locator form and book / take a day-2 PCR test.

      • Vit says:

Thanks Duncan. Yes, that’s all I have found as well. Of course I think need to get the fully vax proof as well. Anyone has preferred self-pcr-test provider recommended?

        • Patrycja says:

Duncan is correct, you only need PLF and day 2 PCR test. We used both, CTM booking portal and Randox to book tests. CTM are more expensive but you can use Royal Mail boxes to post the test back which makes it very easy. Randox arrive quicker and you get a confirmation email with reference quicker than CTM. They are also cheaper. There are however only 3 drop off boxes in Edinburgh so you would need to check if there is one near to where you’ll be staying.

        • Dave says:

Expert Medicals or Nationwide Pathology. You’ll get the number for locator form but not always guaranteed to get test on time

  • Mike says:

How long does it usually take for the 3000 Avios bonus for adding a supp to a BAPP to appear?

When I did this for a Plat it was pretty much instant. It’s been over a week
now since I added a supp to my new BAPP and no sign of the points. Also, 3.5 weeks and £1.5k of spend in and the only offer I’ve had so far is ‘add a supp’, no spend offers!

    • Biki says:

After 5 weeks the Supp bonus still hadn’t been added for my platinum, so I called and they added it on manually, which was noted as goodwill adjustment.

    • scott says:

A delay with mine too, for the Gold card. Used instant chat, they confirmed eligibility for the bonus was OK, so couldn’t explain why it hadn’t appeared, apart from try activating the supp card and adding to online account (which I thought was bollocks, as I’ve had it before without doing anything with the card.) Told them I’d try this and get back in touch if still no joy.

    • Alex says:

Platinum supplementary bonus, 7 weeks and counting!
