We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Adding a car for 5 or more days reduced the net cost? There is massive shortages of hire cars and the rates are generally sky high – not doubting your maths but I would double double check before pressing the button..

And as for your question, I “forgot” my car recently in Jersey as I was pretty slaughtered after two flights and a 2 hour lounge connection , avis cared not…

    • roberto says:

      Reply to MW….

    • MW says:

Yup, surprisingly went down by £30 compared with flight only (CE). Tbh if not for the TPs would have probably flown ET for this trip. Will, of course, double-check. Did you get double TPs and BA Hols Avios?

      • Harry T says:

It’s because BA holidays often have access to cheaper fare buckets for the flights.

  • Tom says:

Struggling with VeriFLY. I’ve signed up and am attempting to add my flight details. I get as far as the drop down menu to select my airline and the only options are Aer Lingus and American Airlines (I’m flying with BA). Unable to scroll or type manually.
I’ve deleted the app and reinstalled it to no avail. Any ideas!?

    • Rob says:

Weird. I just downloaded it myself 10 minutes ago for a flight tomorrow and BA was there.

    • Tom says:

Scrap that! My destination is in Spain and it seems that VeriFLY only supports Aer Lingus and American Airlines customers flying to Spain. Oh well! To check it is… (despite travelling HBO!) 😑

      • Pete M says:

Isn’t Spain one of the countries where BA does its own checks via MMB? (It does for Germany on the outbound, for instance)

      • happeemonkee says:

You can use Verifly for the return from Spain

        • Nick says:

BA uses their own verification process outbound from the UK, and Verifly for the inbound. No idea why but that’s what they decided. Or you could save yourself the hassle and just do it at the desk – if you save everything to your iPad files it’ll only take 20 secs to show them all.

    • Peter K says:

Someone was saying this yesterday. Seems some routes have an issue.

    • Shaw West says:

Flew with Ryanair over the weekend to Alicante. Filled the Spanish locator form, obtained the qr code, uploaded the vaccine certs and the locator form to Ryanair and that was it. Mobile boarding pass did work. At Alicante there was health dept check verifying the qr code. All in all took 5 mins at the ALC airport to clear security and health check

  • TGLoyalty says:

It always says that and always pay out anyway.

    • Anuj says:

      Thanks

      • Anuj says:

How long does it usually take for the money to credit on virgin ?

        • Andrew says:

On my Virgin Money account, it’s 30 days, then you choose where you want it to be paid too.

I’ve got 10% and 5% on BoS and MBNA at the moment.

    • K says:

Do you need to save these offers on Virgin CC (like AMEX) or are all the offers “tailored” and already saved onto your account?

      • Reney says:

No need to save. Yes they are tailored, I don’t have this offer this time round.

  • GT says:

I’m considering upgrading to BAPP card to take advantage of increased Club World availability using the companion voucher. I’m wondering if there is indeed increased availability on the LHR-SYD route when you have a new style voucher and would appreciate any reports from contributors here.

    • Harry T says:

If there’s a certain degree of I class availability on that route, then theoretically you should see more Avios seats with the new voucher (see Rob’s recent article).

Redemptions to Australia are usually poor value vs a decent cash fare though, or at least they were when it was actually possible to fly to Australia easily.

    • Sam G says:

I just clicked through a few weeks in April on expertflyer and LHR-SYD is I9 pretty much every day – so in theory should be good. need someone with the voucher to double check though

Jury is out on whether they’ll even operate SYD again so could be a nice way to use a 2-4-1 on Qatar 😉

      • Paul Pogba says:

I checked for August/Sept 22 and it was pretty poor, two CW seats each way once per month at odd times (making for a trips of around 5 days or 6 weeks) and they priced at about 315k avios + ~£1600 fees. I’d probably be happy with that as a 241 redemption if I could find better dates but I guess availability won’t get much better when more people start thinking about travel down there.

        • GT says:

Thanks Paul that’s exactly the information I was looking for. It doesn’t look like availability’s going to be much better than with the old vouchers.

  • Navara says:

    May stack with Airtime

  • Hotinnewcastlesays says:

Staying in Vienna at Marriott Courtyard on the Work Anywhere Stay Rate at the weekend, contacted reservations to confirm early check in and late check out and got told Breakfast not included – this article states breakfast included – is there any official website/link/document (cant find any except hfp article) to persuade the hotel to reconsider.
    Link – https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/01/marriott-launches-new-work-at-hotel-packages/

    • Memesweeper says:

The Work Anywhere page on the Marriott website has gone too… is this over ???

  • Char Char says:

Tesco, Morrisons and Asda all run discounted gift cards through work schemes for between 2-5% and have been for many years, a lot of the schemes like instore and Airtime are basically pocketing the differences.

The 10% offers are usually limited time offers which must be funded by the stores, no idea why especially when they claim there is a supply chain crisis, unless they are trying to get people to stock up now rather than closer to christmas

    • Toby says:

My suspicion is it’s to help with trading updates — I think they run these to help massage their turnover numbers to hit certain targets/expectation.

      • JDB says:

Tesco’s H1 turnover was c. £27bn; I don’t think a few enthusiastic gift card buyers will make much difference.

  • aviosnewbie says:

I have booked a return CW ticket using an FTV that includes a companion voucher. Is it possible to cancel the return leg after we have flown the outbound segment? And will it give me another FTV with the companion voucher again? Thanks!

    • JDB says:

No! The companion voucher is already used on the outbound and bookings also be have to be cancelled 24 hours before the first flight to get the Avios back.
