We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • Sam says:

I’m probably being stupid, but can someone tell me the exact phone number / option to add a return flight to an existing avios booking? Spent an age on hold this morning only to be disconnected once I was being transferred to the correct line. I have no status.

    • Anna says:

There isn’t one unless you’re in F on one of the legs, you have to take your chance with BAEC like everyone else!

      • Sam says:

I actually am flying first on the outbound, will You First be able to help? even though the return I’m looking to add is in Club? Only asking as I don’t want to waste my time on hold.

  • Matt says:

Email from Post Office savings – no longer able to pay in by direct debit after March next year. Going to make switching bank accounts more irritating.

    • Andrew says:

Why not just send by Faster Payment instead? That way you don’t lose out on the 4 days (meagre) interest in the process.

      • John says:

The only use of the post office savings account is to have a direct debit to qualify for switching and other offers.

        • Genghis says:

I used to have a few of them back in the day – Tesco x 2, BM and PO – all for £1 pcm.

    • Toaster says:

Plum, Moneybox and Paypal are useful for creating some DDs for one off and ongoing use. If you need them only for a switch then there are charity ones available or onepounddd

  • VickyTM says:

Hi, any recommendations for a hotel in Liverpool. Preferably IHG or Marriott.
    Thanks

    • Ikaz says:

I wouldn’t recommend the Aloft after an unsafe stay last year, I quite like the Marriott although the hotel is dated, a great team there. The Indigo is modern, but I didn’t get any benefits as spire except for welcome drink over multiple stays last year, I have not tried the other IHG hotels (the Pullman, Radisson and Doubletree hotels are quite good too). Parking a car is a challenge at most of them, although the Marriott typically waves the parking charge for elite members

      • Sandgrounder says:

        Why was the Aloft unsafe?

        • AL says:

The Aloft used to be the best of a bad bunch, at least in 2016 when I was there for work.

        • Ikaz says:

With Covid they failed to do complete clean between giests. The room was tidy enough for me to only notice on day 2, after I had slept in the same sheets than the previous guest… Completely unforgivable

      Titanic

    • Diydegsy says:

Have stayed at Aloft the last 2 times in Liverpool and it was great – no problems, excellent upgrade and great breakfast, loved it.

    • Red Flyer says:

Crowne Plaza has plentiful parking and right on waterfront next to 3 graces. Lots of roadworks in city centre at the moment and this is just outside where they begin, so will save you some hassle (as will the Indigo which is a 2 mins walk over the road).

    • John says:

I like the DT (Hilton) as long as it’s returned to its precovid service levels which may not be the case yet.

    • Don says:

      Staybridge Suites in Liverpool

      • Olly says:

I second the Staybridge Suites having stayed there in the summer for the first time with the brand due to needing a dog-friendly hotel. Stayed there for a week and found it very good – service very friendly and studio well equiped. I’m Spire so got a great upgrade and given parking in the basement after the first night. Still had to pay but preffered to public parking. It was only a couple of minutes walk and reasonably priced for the public one however. Breakfast included was okay but a bit samey. Ideally located for the city being in the Albert Docks is a few of minutes walk into Liverpool One et al.

I’m trying to book using avios on AA from Miami to Rio next year. Miles availability is showing on AA, but when I try and book via BA, it’s just showing no availability, in any class, on any date. I followed the instructions in the HfP article from earlier this year, but am I missing something??

    • ChrisC says:

Are you seeing the lowest ‘saaver’ awards on the AA website?

Those are the only rewards you can use avios for.

    • Sam G says:

Is it saver availability? Usually there isn’t much of this on AA in biz

      • Lula says:

Oh, didn’t notice anything about award types, but couldn’t see any availability in any class via BA. I’ll try again. Thanks for responding!

  • H says:

Has anyone applied for / received a Qatar travel voucher? If so how long did it take from cancelling the flight? Any experience applying the voucher to flights?

  • Pete M says:

After shunning Verifly for ages, I tried it out flying from BER on Sunday and was very impressed – scanned my vaccine and PLF QR code, got automatic immediate approval, which unlocked online check-in. One quick glance at the Verifly app by the agent on boarding and was done. I gather mileage varies depending on the airport you’re using, but this was impressive.

    • Ben W says:

I travel HBO and Verifly has meant no faff at Heathrow, Lisbon, Malaga, Barcelona or Valencia so far.

  • Pete M says:

I don’t think they could, but it’s limited to £5, no? If you’re referring to the Tesco Express offer?

  • Phil W says:

Had a similar situation with HI Salzburg. Checked in on the 29-Sept and as we were checking out 1-Oct, I asked to pre-pay the bill. Due to the fx movement, my carefully planned spend target landed on my Amex pending @ £199.34. Raced down to the bar on as soon as I saw that, bought a beer, charged it to the room and immediately went and settled the bill at reception. Luckily the cost of beer showed as 30-Sept and the £50 statement credit was processed.

    • Pete M says:

Definitely worth the hassle for the £50 I’d say in both cases! 🙂

      • Magic Mike says:

Last winter I had to buy an emergency bottle of wine on checkout as I had miscalculated my bill at the Moxy Southampton…
