We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Voi scooters £2 back on £10 spend on Amex, go to the link and it’s an “Awesome idea still being worked on”….really?

  • Deb says:

Hi how do I know if my platinum Amex has the offer you mentioned of £200 ? Thsnk you

    • Rob says:

They all have it – all personal U.K. Platinum cards.

Will show under ‘Offers’ on your online statement page. You must opt in.

    • Marina says:

Mine did not show when activated card (Saturday) tried a spend on card to push it through, but then contacted Amex via chat Sunday morning only took 5 mins just asked for the £200 dining offer to be added to my offers and they did straight away. Now to decide where to use it 😁

Due to a delay in a big house work bill, I’m falling behind on hitting the SUB on my card. Don’t want to spend for the sake of spending so looking just to bring forward bills. So far all I got is council tax, energy provider won’t accept amex (tbh not sure I want to put too much credit there) otherwise possibly prepaying EE contract, has anyone done that with their credit card? Also any other suggestions would be great! Thanks!

    • Spurs drive me mad says:

Put some of your bills for work on house through Billhop. Yes there’s a 2.99% fee but only you know if that’s worth it or not.

      • kitten says:

        Amazon credit
Gift cards in your favourite store that has an offer, get a selection
Prepay Council Tax via Paypoint (works a lot of coops depending which)

    • Reney says:

buy gift cards for the supermarket you normally do your food shopping? Start any Christmas shopping now.

    • Sam G says:

EE accept Amex and allow you to overpay it so that’s an option. Gift cards are another or Amazon credit if you use that option. You can get gift cards for things like Netflix and pay off a years bill etc. But the easiest way for a major quick boost is Billhop if you’ve got any bills to pay and just suck up the 2.99%!

      • Nick says:

Energy credit is protected under regulation. Might take a couple of months to get it back should your provider disappear but you won’t lose it.

      • Stephan says:

Thanks all for all the suggestions! I think prepaying EE is great given I still have 1.5 years left and the rest I’ll add to gift cards.

    • BuildBackBetter says:

If u r sure if flying BA in the future, book a ticket, cancel it and take a voucher.
If planning to replace mobiles, you can buy Apple or JL gift cards. Train season tickets, Amazon top ups.

    • FCP says:

Hotels.com BA or similar. Book a fully flexible, refundable trip (s) for in the future, earn the SUB and then cancel them later, offsetting against new spend.

Now that Alitalia have ceased flying and been replaced in part by ITA, I was wondering what has happened to the Mille Miglia points.

Apologies if I missed a mention on the site. I’m presuming the points are lost. I have so few it’s no concern, just interest.

Finally managed to use my Marriott £400 credit (x2) from last year… Had a really great stay at the Langley over the weekend. Could not fault the service, food or spa. Did not want to leave!! Seems like the issues in robs review from 2019 have been resolved.

    • Jonathan says:

So they let you roll dates forward? More generous than they were with points bookings!

      • meta says:

No need to, you can always prepay the hotel and it triggers the offers.

      • Lev441 says:

Yes, kept on having to rearrange due to the various lockdowns and the hotel remaining shut until may. Think it was my 6th or 7th date change!

Pre-paid the rate on both my cards before the offer ended. No difference in room rate even though they’re now charging a lot more per night than when I booked.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Was actually there on Saturday night (booked on Thursday night for 50k just before it returned to 60k) and upgraded to a lovely main house suite on the second floor.

Dinner service in Cedar was great on Saturday night but at breakfast you could tell the staff were flustered by the nearly full house and it wasn’t quite as slick as it could’ve been. Be sure to mention if don’t like your omelettes well done too!!!

Prefer if they brought back proper menus rather than QR codes and the continental buffet would be a well return aswell!

Spa is very nice but unfortunately the steam room was out of action and completely flooded for our time slot and the staff didn’t seem too concerned about getting it fixed any time soon.

Personally while it’s worth 50k points and it’s deffo worth £800 of free credit I wouldn’t be entirely satisfied if I paid the £550-600 a night they are currently asking.

  • Anna says:

Pleasant stay in Edinburgh this weekend. I don’t like The George as much as the Kimpton, we were upgraded to a superior twin but it felt quite small and looked onto a side street. Shower screen leaked badly. As ambassador we got 2 x 18 year old whiskey miniatures plus the usual edible goodies, and a £15 F & B credit. Toiletries and Lemon Melt biscuits replenished on request (best thing in Club Kitchen). Using the Ambassador free night was a bargain as we booked when Friday was £279; by the weekend the same room was £383 per night! Looked to be a very expensive weekend if you booked late, even the HI was £300.

    • Michael C says:

Yikes, Boston prices! Hope you had a nice break anyway, Anna.

      • Anna says:

Thanks, yes we did! Managed to visit the Kingdom of Scotland section of the National Museum at last and also did the Harry Potter walking tour which was fun and I would recommend, especially if you have a Potter fan in the family!

      • Anna says:

Ironically Boston prices have dropped a lot recently!

        • Michael C says:

Yes, also rebooked! Seaport Hampton an insane $450 (?!) for Sat., so one night points then $180…

    • BP says:

I liked the George better than the Kimpton but maybe because I got upgraded to a Junior Suite. The base rooms at both hotels are very small.

      • Anna says:

Yes, if I stayed again I’d probably book a suite, I was with a friend this weekend so we needed 2 beds so the twin was fine in that respect. I think we were very spoiled at the Kimpton last time, we’re back at Xmas so I hope it’s not disappointing!

      • Clubx says:

Have to agree with this. Their junior suites are excellent and comes with open bar! Perhaps BP and I got lucky but we never know. Spire AMB as well.

      • David says:

Junior and main George Street suites are fantastic, much nicer than the Kimpton suites.
Also prefer the building and decor of the IC but that is just down to personal preference. Base rooms at IC can be small and a little disappointing.

  • Brian says:

I have spend £180 on Finnair, get £40 back on my Amex Gold.

  • Junior says:

Have I missed any news on the Virgin Clubhouse vouchers? I think the last update from them was in August unless it’s totally passed me by.
