Restaurants going missing from the list for the American Express Platinum £200 dining credit

American Express is currently running a very generous offer for holders of The Platinum Card.

All cardholders have been given £200 to spend at any of the restaurants on this list. Even more generously, Amex has – so far – been giving the credit to new Platinum cardholders too. This could change, but so far so good for HfP readers who applied after 1st September when this deal launched.

If you haven’t used your credit yet, be aware that the list of participating restaurants is NOT fixed.

Core by Clare Smyth, which has three Michelin stars and was one of the highest profile restaurants on the list, has quietly disappeared. Reader Anthony had a booking here and rang Amex when he spotted this, and they confirmed that it has been removed.

Given that visiting Core generally requires a booking well in advance, this seems unreasonable. I would assume that the majority of cardholders who book this offer do not keep checking back to ensure that the list is unchanged.

It isn’t clear why this happened, but Core is very popular and very small and appears to be virtually full between now and Christmas. If it has been removed due to limited availability, we may see other restaurants also disappearing as we head into December.

The lesson here is that you should double-check the restaurants taking part in this offer on the day you are planning to visit.

UPDATE: Since this article was published, American Express has confirmed to HfP that they will honour the £200 cashback even if a property is removed from the website.

I’m loving Lando, so cool 🙂

  • JW says:

Didn’t know about this. How do you enroll?

    • Rob says:

It will be in the Offers section of your card’s online statement. If you’ve just got the card, you may need to call to get it added.

  • Fly1A says:

May I suggest checking your restaurant booking the day before you are due to dine as most top end places have a 24 hour (or longer) cancellation policy….

    • TGLoyalty says:

The thing is this is incredibly poor form.

Why remove it just because it’s now fully booked. I’d be complaining to Amex that you planned in good faith (have you tried getting tables at the other places on the list apart from the many Ivys?) and they’ve pulled the rug from beneath you so to speak.

      • Sam G says:

I’m thinking they maybe remove it from that page, but the offer would pay out anyway? Perhaps they just want to stop people enquiring at the restaurants if they’re fully booked. Bit of a dumb way of doing it if so!

  • Mucky says:

Does the amex dining credit apply to the platinum business card as well? I haven’t seen it under the offers section.

    Thanks

  • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

Worth noting though that there is no provision in the terms for the participating restaurants to change. The general offer terms only allow changes before the cardmember saves the offer. I think you would have a very compelling argument that the list of restaurants is locked in when you hit save. If I had a booking at Core, I’d try my luck in the complaints process rather than cancelling.

Nice suggestion, sounds like a good way to put an end to offers like this

      • Rob says:

To be fair, there will be plenty of people who booked Core for 2-3 months ahead based on this offer and didn’t bother checking back.

      • Mr(s) Entitled says:

That’s not really fair. The T&C’s work both ways and both parties should be bound by them.

  • Jenny W says:

What a fantastic start to a Sunday morning watching the Lando video, what a lovely thing to do 😊

  • Mrs_Fussy says:

    Loved the video ! Priceless

  • RTS says:

Does the business platinum get this too?
