We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Complicated baggage allowance question. Flying Palma (PMI) to London via Ibiza on one ticket bought with avios (half term week meant the more direct flights not available).

Palma to Ibiza is Iberia economy (no business option) and Ibiza to London is BA Club Europe.

I have BA silver status. On Iberia BA Silver get an extra bag but no allowance for overweight (ie up to 32kg instead of 23kg). I know your often allowed the baggage allowance for the most generous sector, but does this apply for mixed Iberia / BA bookings like this? And does it count if the 32kg allowance on the BA sector is really only due to status allowance?

    • Richie says:

Is PMI-IBZ with a BA flight number?

      • Nick says:

You can actually find this out. If you go to the website of another airline that uses Amadeus (AY, RJ, QF) it will give you your baggage allowance in Amadeus terms (e.g. 2PC/32 means 2 pieces at 32kg each). The BA ‘email my e-ticket receipt’ option used to do the same, but haven’t checked recently if it still does. Officially the ‘heavy bag waiver’ is supposed to be for BA operated flights only but this method will show you if it has by chance carried over, which it sometimes does by mistake.

        • Niall says:

Legend. This was a good call. I put the code into finnair site and it shows 32kg x2 for both sectors. I’d have been happy but I decided to also check Iberia and it shows 23kg x2. Which do you think I should believe?

Oh the Iberia PMI – IBZ flight doesn’t have a BA flight number.

          • Niall says:

To answer my own question, I believe Finnair, not Iberia. BA website says I should get most significant airline (flight distance) baggage allowance, which in this case is BA. Also found out 2 bags at 32kg is the standard allowance for club Europe. So Iberia have no reason to deny.

Can u upgrade k class premium economy with miles on virgin

  • Donna says:

Has anyone actually managed to get through to BA Holidays over the past couple of days?
I am now sitting on 109 calls with getting cut off after the “blah blah blah, press this press that”. I cant even get in a queue.

    • Amo says:

I got through after 45 mins yesterday, when I called at approx 12:00. Took a few attempts but it is possible.

  • BlueHorizonUK says:

From Oct 18, SAS will become first airline in the world to make face masks optional. Mandatory requirement will end..

  • David says:

Are virgin having a laugh? My upper class tickets I bought in the Black Friday sale for £1900 for the pair are currently £22,000 !

    • Paul says:

      Which dates & destination?

    • Andrew says:

All the virgin pricing seems to be all over the place at the moment, possibly a fault LHR to MIA quoting £349 economy and £1900 in premium – which is absurd

  • David says:

    lhr-lax sfo-lhr 24/11-4/12

  • Rosie says:

Do BA offer special club Europe upgrade rates at check in (subject to availability) if so any idea what the cost is ? Going to Berlin in October , MMB the upgrade is additional 550 for 2 of us 1 way OTB (79pp coming home ) which is way to much for short flight

    • Nick says:

Yes they do. 550 is not a promotional upgrade rate, it’s a fare rules upgrade – so keep checking in case the config changes and this triggers a POU.

If not, then ask at check-in. The price and availability will be very easy for the agent to find and they’ll have no issue telling you what they are. How much do you think is reasonable?

  • RichardH says:

I’m looking to book LHR-BKK-LHR for Christmas and have found a great deal with Singapore for £1600 in business for the dates I need (25/12-11/1) which seems like a great deal for a quality airline.

The problem is that the flights are not available booking directly with Singapore, but only via OTAs – most are brands I’ve never heard of, but the fare is available on Expedia. Has anyone had an experience with Expedia lately? Is it worth adding some accommodation to get the ATOL protection. Booking via Expedia saves £1000 so I’m very tempted but worried about some of the horror stories over the past 18 months…
