Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Monday 11th October

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Anyone have recent experience on how long it takes to receive amex platinum. Going out of town so wondering if it will come in time.
There is no sign of it on my account. Does this mean I can’t do anything with it till I receive it and activate it, such as referrals etc.
    Thanks

Applied 7/10. Card was waiting for me when I got back today 11/10. Spoke to Amex chat and had the Dining offer added straightaway without any quibble.

    • Ryan says:

My biz arrived in 4 days, personal probably 5-7

  • Dave says:

Probably a very easy question I should know but… we’ve just got our 241 voucher- where do we find it please? Is it on Avios site? BA Executive Club site? Told by Amex today we’ve aren’t it so is it that it hasn’t appeared wherever it goes yet? Thanks

Hilton/Clubcard tie up finishes at the end of the year 🙁

I’m gutted, other than occasional days out it pretty much leaves only Hotels.com as a viable route for getting maximal value for me…

    • Blenz101 says:

Agree it’s a real shame to see a long-standing big name go from the scheme. Limiting that it only ever covered UK & Ireland though. Even at a lower rate the option to convert straight to HH Points would have been a far better proposition.

Guess we have to pin everything on hotels.com lasting as long as possible now!

    • Andrew H says:

      Virgin points?

      • Blenz101 says:

        The casino option!

        • Andrew H says:

Certainly worth doing once if they are still running 2000 bonus points for a small auto- transfer.

          • Blenz101 says:

I’m having my last couple of quarters of max points – already well in excess of £400 in this period. RIP Tesco debit card.

Ideally don’t want to leave it all in Tesco if possible but certainly don’t fancy Virgin Points as a safe alternative.

After singing the praises of the Schloss Lieser in Germany a few weeks ago, I may have to qualify.

I didn’t check out in person, and they missed the dinner charge off my bill, so, at their request, I sent them an email authorising “a debit of EUR 160.00”.

Today, I learned they applied dynamic currency conversion, costing me an additional £5.01. It may be a small amount, but I’m not letting them get away with that.

    • Crafty says:

I’m astonished they have pursued you for a missed charge. Never had that before. For me, once I am off the property with my account settled, that’s that!

  • Simon says:

Applied for a 21 month 0 % purchase and 20 month 0 % balance transfer (on the 1 card) last week

Application successful card came today however when looking online and calling they have only given be 21 month 0% balance … no offer on purchase which seems odd

they said u would have to reapply , reluctant to do as applying for credit twice in a7 working days can’t be good for your credit rating

Any idea if the back office can’t sort without the need of impacting credit score or am in stuffed with it

    • Blenz101 says:

Are they saying this is what you are being offered after your application i.e they assessed your personal circumstances and offered you something other than the typical package offered to at least 51% of their customers.

If it’s a technical issue then you should absolutely complain. If the former (you just didn’t qualify for the 20 months on purchases) you are likely stuffed, check what you actually signed at the end of the application and what your agreement says.

  • Mel T says:

I don’t know if you’ll see this or if its helpful – I used to book via the travelplus virgin atlantic page (google will find the site) – it is a PIA to cancel if you need to as have to call up. I looked for a trip next year to chicago and it was not as ridiculous – worth a look?

  • Jonathan says:

Free year on the Amex gold card has just come to an end thinking of cancelling and going for the free rewards card to keep the points alive.
Is it best to open the new rewards card before cancelling or see if they offer any retention to keep it open?
Roughly when does the bonus 10k points post? Thanks
