We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Easyjet package to Amsterdam, they cancelled our flights and moved us to later flights on the same day – 2 hours later on outbound, which is ok, but the inbound is over 3 hours later arriving at 9.15pm – which does not work.
There protection promise states that we can cancel but the deposit (£120) is transferred into a credit voucher to be used at a later date (not sure if it is transferrable).
I understand that the rules relating to flight only and packages are different, but is there any way in getting a refund rather than a credit note from Easyjet?

    • Jonathan says:

If there is a material change in package holiday bookings then you are entitled to full refund. 3 hour time change is probably a grey area so you’d have to justify why that didn’t work for you. I’d try & push back with EasyJet in writing explaining why you need to cancel & throw in a reference to pursuing through MCOL but not sure I’d actually follow through if it came down to it.

    • Harry T says:

Are the flight numbers the same? I don’t think you’ll get very far arguing about a flight change of three hours tbh, if it’s the same flight number.

    • Jonathan says:

It can be very sticky and grey area when you’re only offered a credit note and not a refund, since insurance companies view it as ‘a voucher’ and if you’ve been offered one, you’re not covered.

One available method is S75 (if you paid by credit card) or Chargeback.

Something that makes me fuming is that being offered a credit note is essentially blackmailing someone to travel somewhere they not want to go back for whatever reason, and why the government and the Association of British Insurers think this type of resolution is acceptable in any form is beyond me, especially since if you’re doing the right thing by following government travel guidelines, or your holiday wasn’t cancelled on your end

      • GaryE says:

Hi – Flight numbers are different, but it is a package holiday. If it was flight only then I know Easyjet would give a full refund. I cannot even see anywhere in their price promise that if I took the credit voucher I can a) transfer it to someone else to use or b) I could use it on a flight only booking – really don’t have energy to call them – but might have to!

        • Jonathan says:

Like I said, it’s a very grey and sticky area, and unfortunately sometimes needs good legal knowledge to fully understand your rights

  • Asim says:

I bought a £1100 flight with e-vouchers online. Flight’s now been cancelled, and I’d like a refund. If I request a refund online, it says it’ll be paid back by the same method I paid (ie another e-voucher).

To get the refund as a payment to my credit card, do I need to call them?

    • Phil says:

      Unfortunately, yes.

    • Jonathan says:

How BA help themselves so well !

Have their phone lines clogged for a simple and easy request, that you’re fully legally entitled to, but here’s the catch, they can’t get to you straight away since there’s so many other calls going through that they then just put an automated message up telling you they’re too busy to talk, and you need to try again another time ! (if you’re unlucky to need to talk to them when this sort of problem comes up

      • Lady London says:

Just keep records of time and date, and method by which you tried to reach them, and the result.

        • Asim says:

          Thanks all!

Not in urgent need for the money so will put it off a couple months until they’re less busy.

Had to rebook a cancelled flight last month, and got cut of 3x after 1hr (UK numbers, USA everything). Then finally got through after 58min and asked them to call me back when it disconnected, which they did so. So 5hrs to do a simple rebook which could have been done online if they’d give codeshare options!

  • Sina says:

Has anyone used statusmatch.com? Me & my wife both applied for status matches on different airlines and never heard anything from anyone!

They just took our $2 and that’s it!

Just wanted to tell you not to risk your 1$ for this as seems like a scam! 😀

    • John says:

Seems like one of those services which charge a fee to tell you how to use a website

      • Sina says:

well it claims accepting status match from a number of airlines who don’t publicly offer any status match! now it seems the website only claims they do so they can take your money! 😛

    • Rich says:

      The crowdsourced one is statusmatcher.com

  • High Grade says:

    Hi all

If I buy IHG points and use my Creation IHG black card, do I still get the bonus for spending with IHG (i think its 4 points per £/$). Do creation charge a 3% fee for transactions in US$.

    • Sina says:

you don’t get bonus points in my experience as points.com is the merchant and it would add Currency exchange fees unless you have an offer on your card!?

  • Jamil says:

Hi, I have a ba.com booking with my companion voucher. The flight is on Saturday morning. I want to cancel it. What is the best way to get a flight voucher issued? Shall I just go through the online process on the website?

    • Jamil says:

Follow up question. It looks like they would issue an e-voucher or a Future Travel Voucher via the website? Does it really matter which one I get? I just want to be sure my companion voucher is extended.

      • Rob says:

EVoucher can only be issued for cash tickets.

      • AJA says:

If you want to extend the 2-4-1 then make sure you go for the FTV. I think you will get a FTV anyway as it’s 2-4-1 and Avios booking. You should just be able to cancel for the FTV within MMB. You have until 1 hour before scheduled departure (close of check in?) to cancel although I’d do it sooner rather than later. BA will appreciate that too as it will be less hassle for them too.

        • Jamil says:

Thank you for the replies. I cancelled the ticket earlier and received an FTV within 15 minutes!

  • Augustiner says:

Anyone had any experience booking Virgin flights through Kayak? Looking for Florida next summer and they are substantially cheaper than on VS website. It appears VS take payment via Kayak and indeed on current rebooking page VS mentions Kayak as avenue where VS can rebook for you. Is there a catch I’m missing?

    • Richie says:

      Is Kayak a travel agent?

      • Augustiner says:

No they are an like Skyscanner

        • bill says:

I noticed a button last weeek hwen looking at Loganait tickets which was to purchase via Skyscanner rather than any other named travel agent.

    • ChrisC says:

Make sure these tickets are the one you need though.

Remember VS has 3 different Economy types – Light, Classic and Delight

Light is hand baggage only and seat allocated at the airport for example

  • Tobias says:

Could someone kindly remind me the way to charge business bank payments to an Amex platinum via Amex directly not bill-hop. I have a large spend offer which may be worth hitting if the numbers add up.

  • Kai says:

SSDV – sent an email inquiry and got offered €60 / €100 per person for half-board / full-board options. This is the discounted rate as breakfast is included for Spire.

Are the rates in line with what other people got? I vaguely remember seeing them much cheaper.

    • Richie says:

Is a premium vodka double bloody mary included in the €60 breakfast rate?

      • meta says:

Got half board 35 euros per person if I remember correctly. But I had to negotiate a bit harder for that to happen.

        • Kai says:

Yeah, I was under the impression of €35 too 🙁

          • meta says:

Given they denied me spa treatments incorrectly prior to stay and when I arrived there were no slots available, it all evens up I guess.

    • BP says:

I paid 60 euros pp for half board. Tried to negotiate without success on the basis that breakfast is 35 euros pp.

At 60 euros I thought it was well worth it but I am a big eater and had 3 courses every night! Here’s the main restaurant menu for reference. Everything was included including the steaks and even ordering multiple side dishes was included. The 90 euro BBQ was also included.
