We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

How long do Virgin points take to post from a Clubcard reward order?

  • Mr. AC says:

Thinking about Sri Lanka for late October / early November. We like Hikkaduwa, but the hotel we stayed in before (and loved) has closed down. Anyone has any recommendations of hotels around that area?

    • BuildBackBetter says:

This year? They just came out of lockdown with a lot of restrictions still in place.

      • Mr. AC says:

Would it really affect us if our intention is to stay in the hotel and on the beach?

    • JRC says:

Possibly too far for your liking but we stayed in The Fortress Resort & Spa which is an hour from Hikkaduwa.

Thinking about my unused 241 which expires March 22. Can I use my existing BWC voucher AVIOS and cash to book a one way booking using the 241 obs in the phone, if possible! Then cancel for another voucher with the 241 in the wrapper?

  • Suze says:

Can anyone recommend a decent taxi firm in Nice? The normal one we use for getting to and from the airport have doubled their rates!

    • Rich says:

Uber are active in Nice, aren’t they? Unless you want something special, I wouldn’t look any further than that.

    • HH says:

I’ve always used Uber. I’m also aware the tram now serves the airport, which may be a good option if you’re downtown and without bulky luggage.

    • Andrew says:

Don’t bother with the taxi, if you’re going to Monte Carlo, book the helicopter transfer.

Spain travel question. I have postponed the travel by a week, Strangely the Spanish website doesn’t let me change the flight details. Do I need to let it expire and complete another one later or is there anyway to change the flight dates?

    • Sam G says:

I made a mistake with mine and just did another one. No point doing it until 48hrs before your new flight

      • Shaw West says:

thank you. I will let this one expire and create another one. 🙂

    Hi All,

SO & I want to plan a trip to NYC and treat my mother with joining us as a surprise.

What would you say are our best hotel options for 3 adults? We would love to stay in Chelsea/Greenwhich area however I’m hoping for a cheaper solution than booking 2 hotel rooms (i.e. a suite with 2 rooms/bathrooms?)

    Any recommendations? Thanks!!

    • Louise K says:

Not quite Greenwich / Chelsea but I believe the Conrad in lower Manhattan has big rooms. I’m sure Rob wrote a review on here.

I’ve stayed at the Hilton Doubletree in Chelsea and found the rooms decent – two large beds and large closet.

      • Rob says:

There are two Conrads now, I’ve only stayed in Downtown. Both are ‘all suite’ so huge rooms, by NYC standards.

    • Richie says:

There apart’otels across in Jersey City.

    • ChrisC says:

Not your location but I like the Mint House (previously The Lyric) on Pine Street in the Financial District which has a number of suites with 2 rooms 2 baths plus kitchen and seating area.

And these would be 2 proper bedrooms not someone sleeping on a sofa bed in the living area (though they have those as well)

Next to Wall Street but easy access to several subway lines.

I have some 3,500 Hyatt points that expire by the end of the year. As far as I can tell, the only realistic way to spend them is to get some meal/drinks vouchers and spend them in a Hyatt Hotel restaurant.

Hyatt have a few decent hotels in London (Old Scotland Yard, Liverpool St Andaz and the Regency off Oxford St) but we aren’t really tasting menu gourmets, so there is little point in spending £300 just to save £30. So maybe its down to cocktails in a swanky bar then on to a more down to earth restaurant.

Is that our only option or does anyone have a suggestion?

    • Josh says:

Take advantage of 30% bonus and buy lowest amount of points. Hyatt has incredible redemption value so trying to top up to 10/15k might be worth it to redeem a good night.

      • BJ says:

Anybody heading to Yosemite might want to consider Hyatt El Capitan JdV in Merced, buying the points cuts the rate by over half at times. There are better bases than Merced such as Mariposa but I’m not sure there are any chain options.

    • Lyn says:

You can also earn points through spending in one of their hotel restaurants, so that would extend your points.

Hyatt have a promotion at the moment for earning extra bonus points for dining. I think the London hotels are included.

    • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

The Andaz has a serviceable pub attached if you want an entirely down-to-earth experience.

  • BJ says:

Seems like there has been more e-gate misery at LHR this morning, 2-4h delays according to Sky News.

    • Joints&Piles says:

I arrived into T2 a week ago and it took almost 2 hours because there were only 6 e-gates open. Spent the whole time adjacent to the one man who didn’t want to wear a mask and kept banging on about it. He was very annoying. Fine, don’t wear a mask, just don’t go on about it for an hour. Even more annoying was his delight when they started handing out water, which of course led to half the queue removing their masks.
