Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 5th October

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Is £650 return in PE to NYC a decent fare for December?

  • Mikeact says:

Book now..all Southampton/Europe flights loaded for next Summer, May onwards.

    • Richie says:

      Anything new?

      • Mikeact says:

Only the Winter Salzburg route but at least we can get out to Europe without the Heathrow or Gatwick hassle, and once there its pretty easy to get around, ie Mykonos, we shall use the island ferries.

  • Chelseafi says:

Is the £200 dining offer on Plat still being added to new applications, will be applying this month just wondering what chance of getting offer. Thanks

  • HH says:

Chase 5% round-up has gone live. In-app click Add > Save spare change. Never going to be an exciting amount, but better than nothing. I assume this counts as interest subject to tax (above annual PSA)?

  • Scottydogg says:

Anyone had to make a claim through Amex Plat travel insurance and is it any good ?
Due to the changes to travel yesterday im going to need to cancel a trip to europe at the end of this month . I have 2 sets of Easyjet flights , 2 premier inns and an Airbnb reservation to cancel.
Looking on their website , doesnt look like they are offering a straight refund so wondering if i can claim the money back ?

    • Louise K says:

Has there been a change in travel advice to your destination?

    • Sam G says:

You’ll need to give us more info but the likely scenarios I’m thinking of aren’t going to allow you to claim

  • K says:

Lloyds Upgrade Vouchers: I understand earlier this year they were mostly extended to the end of this month. Has anyone any insight as to what the latest position is now?

    • Michael says:

I requested an extension last week and they refused, so 31st Oct may be the end of the line!

      • Mikeact says:

I guess any changes/cancellations (BA/Avios/Lloyds,) the voucher will be lost…one time usage only, regardless.

    • Nigel W says:

I forgot, do we need to book the first leg of any voucher by 30th October or both legs?

    • TGLoyalty says:

Pretty bad if that’s a Dreamliner seat. Cost cutting shines through with the lack of quality.

      • Lady London says:

You give BA a nice new Dreamliner airplane and they can’t even keep it clean

    • Russ says:

Travel influencer’s greatly overestimate how important their input actually is…..

      • Aston100 says:

        You are wrong Russ.
He managed to get his story into the media where countless people will have read this and may reconsider their choice of airline.

If a ‘normal’ person had this experience, it may not have made it into the media.

        • Youllnever says:

Agree – not quite sure how he overestimated his influence. The fact that an article was published on a well-known website and received 800+ comments that same day goes to show that people have taken notice.

          • Russ says:

Well people do tend to overestimate how important they are and how much weight their voice carries. The people sitting on the tarmac of the M25 are perhaps thinking the same thing…

      • Paul Pogba says:

True but this is a second hand ten year old Ford experience at brand new Bentley prices; Arthur Daley would be proud. If these parts wear quickly they need to find a way of swapping them out before any one notices.

      • Rob says:

        OK Russ …

The record for hotel rooms sold from a HfP article is £156,000. And that is only sales we tracked via our links for that offer – the actual total will be far higher.

        • Russ says:

…and is testimony to the amount of work and relevance it has to the people who regularly visit and return to this site, including myself.

        • The Savage Squirrel says:

Rob, I don’t think Russ was referring to you when he said “influencer”. You have a proper business. Most of the “influencers” we encounter are the ones that contact you demanding give-me-your-service-or-product-free-and-I’ll-post-it-on-Insta-and-you’ll-get-1000-new-clients types. So basically digital beggars. When I reply with a suggestion of them paying full price then we’ll refund £x per new client they generate, then they disappear sharpish despite the fact they’d make far more money that way if their claims were true…. 😂

          • His Holyness says:

Who is Jarvis Marcos? The Mail is so rubbish, they can’t even get his name right. Did they just make it up? His name is Adrian Hall.

          • TGLoyalty says:

            Uh?

DM us the right name for the Instagramer / blogger who calls himself The Luxury Traveller. Seems a decent enough guy with his opinions even if he might come across a little entitled.

I can’t see him boycotting BA he’s probably got a stick of points to use up.

          • His Holyness says:

At Abbey National, his name was Adrian Hall, it must be an alias he uses on the blogs

          • Russ says:

Yes indeed, thank you Savage Squirrel and digital beggar seems a fair description. No offence meant Rob *hat tip*

        • Paul Pogba says:

FWIW I see Head for Points as specialist journalism, this chaps website is so vain it would make a moderately attractive teenage girl blush. The luxury traveller is self promotion with a virtuoso webform attached.

        • JimB says:

Yes Jarvis Marcos is Adrian’s online alias. Has his own website under that pseudonym.

Almost certainly would have used points.

          • Rob says:

He did. See the Flyertalk comment he posted. The Mail made up the £4k number.

  • Chelseafi says:

What Gordon Ramsey restaurant (that’s included in the Amex dining offer) would you recommend for family of four (boys 23 & 21), will be midweek, prefer steak & burgers. Thanks

    • HH says:

Check that it’s included, but Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill on Grosvenor Square meets your needs.

    • Rob says:

If they are 21 and 23 I’d be forcing them to try something a bit flashier ….

      • Chelseafi says:

They are very good tbh but it’s to mark son’s 21st which was in summer but only just getting date for us all to go out, so I’ve suggested a Gordon Ramsey place, as he does like a good ribeye.

        • YC says:

From the list, I would go to hawksmoor over gordon ramsay for steak. Or if you want something high end, check out Cut at 45 park lane

    • K says:

21 and 23? Boys? They are men.
