The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 5th October

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

A relative would like to visit from Pakistan and has had two doses of the Sinopharm (Chinese) vaccination. I can’t see Pakistan on the list of accepted countries with double vaccination. Does that mean they will need to quarantine at home for 10 days and do Day 2 and Day 8 PCR tests or do Day 5 test to release?

Stupid Eurostar question….. it’s been years since I last booked tickets for anyone other than myself. I’ve just booked tickets for the whole family, with my Club Eurostar number against my name, and the “points I’ll earn summary” seems to show that I’ll only earn points from my ticket, not all 4 – has something changed? Should I have input my number against the other 3 tickets, or do they now need their own accounts? I can’t easily see how to go back and add my number to give it a try. Really keen to get it sorted, as I booked on a triple club points offer for bookings made by today.

Dear HFPer’s Ned some advice/help please. Looking for a nice restaurant which is reasonably priced for a family dinner around the Greenwich/Canary Wharf area. Pretty open to cuisine, would appreciate a nice view and change in my pocket when I leave. 🤠 thanks

    • Bobri says:

Goodman for steaks, Ivy for drinks, Roka for sushi. Wharf is not the best destination for food lovers unfortunately

      • HH says:

None of these are reasonably priced by London standards…

        • JDB says:

Indeed, I am astonished how many overpriced, not very good restaurants have been recommended on here today, seemingly because they have ‘brands’ like Cut.

        • Bobri says:

We’re talking Canary Wharf… Most reasonably priced places only serve takeaway

    • Cats are best says:

Pre-pandemic we went to Kinkao (Thai) on the Thames path, good food and reasonable view from a window table. We were there in winter, but apparently they have tables on the terrace sometimes.

Depending on where you are staying, getting the TFL river bus service to Masthouse pier adds a bit of novelty, the restaurant is a short walk from there. The Greenwich foot tunnel is also not far (it’s not as nice as the boat!)

    • Reney says:

      is Royal China still there?

    • TGLoyalty says:

Plateau has a good view prices vary.

  • Travel Strong says:

Following on from Save The East Coast’s datapoints: Hilton Gateshead exec lounge open in full, plenty of food and drink on offer with many well dressed folk enjoying the excellent view. I knew my place and promptly left, after grabbing a few drinks to carry out with me. I was upgraded to exec after booking a standard double (HH Gold).

Astounded to find ice machines in the corridors, and a proper squat rack in the gym – I will return for these things alone! Rare finds in the UK.

    • The cyclist says:

Always good to spot a decent rack in any Hotel gym.

    • Harry T says:

That’s great to hear about my local Hilton (I’ve not actually stayed). Speaking of great gyms, the Langley is terrific if you like to lift weights.

  • David says:

Marriott – week of wonders ? Is it likely to be same as last year re redemptions ?

  • John says:

Just got a scare from ernie. They sent me a new secure message, but the website was down for about 2 minutes.

I had to withdraw some of my curved deposits as I need the money, I thought maybe they were going to stop the withdrawal for a KYC check or something, but turned out to just be a notification that they had bought more bonds with my first ever prize win.

    • Roy says:

The National Crime Agency took the NS&I site down on the instructions of Interpol, in order to block your withdrawal while they investigated. We already have it on good authority that both organisations are taking an interest. /s

  • Andy says:

Some fraudster clearly realised the creation days are numbered as a £20 O2 Pay as you Go transaction has popped up in my pending charges

  • Aston100 says:

Hi, what is the worst that can happen if I book Swiss/Lufthansa flights to HKG and they still aren’t letting tourists in nearer the arrival date?
I’ll have my semi-decent travel insurance as well as whatever protection Amex Plat provides.

Those Swiss PE prices to HKG (Under £650pp from London) are whispering in my ears at night “do it, do it, come on Aston100, you know you want to”.

    • K says:

Swiss/Lufthansa have terrible Covid rebooking policy aka “book with confidence”. Unless the flight is cancelled, the following applies

Depending when you book, the worst they can offer is to re-book once to the same destination within the ticket validity AND pay price difference or at best, rebook to any destination ONCE and pay price difference. Latter was for bookings during the summer, I don’t think they do offer that anymore.

It makes you think how good BA’s book with confidence policy !

      • Sam G says:

+ if the flight is cancelled they issue you a deadline to accept their new flight/pick a new date or get a refund – none of the sitting on it like you can with BA

    • Sam G says:

travel insurance is almost certainly useless if the flight operates and you aren’t allowed on it
I’ve read some reports that it’s hard to use the free date change as the prices you get quoted are higher than these deals
got to travel within 1yr of booking
HK likely to remain closed for for the foreseeable (well after most of the region e.g. Japan is now opening slightly, Thailand removing lots of restrictions etc)as they’ll be aligning to China’s COVID zero policies
these LH/LX deals to HK & Asia come up pretty often both now and before COVID, I’d definitely be waiting to book until I knew I could definitely go

    • BJ says:

I thought you were now going to BKK?
