The HfP chat thread – Monday 4th October

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

How do I check / know which plane that BA flies on LHR-SIN has the new Club Suite? Looking at for next year.

    • John says:

I’m scheduled to SIN in February and both ways is old Club World on 777s

    • Rob says:

You shouldn’t trust ANYTHING for next year. Anything more than 3-4 weeks ahead is just a wild guess by BA at this stage.

Anyway, on ba.com you can pull up the aircraft type. A350 is deffo Club Suite, A380 is deffo not. Some 777 have it. Not sure of the current 787 position. For the latter, do a dummy cash booking and go through to the seat selection page. If the arrows on all the seats are pointing forwards in Business, its Club Suite. If half point backwards, its Club World.

    • Simon says:

Search for the flight on Google flights. It will tell you the seat type. If lie flat then it’s old club world seat. If individual suite then it’s new club suite.

A little confused , I’m going to Germany at the end of October , I’m fully vaccinated with Astra , on the sky news website when checking tool to see what country requirements are by adding Germany , it’s saying that I have to take a pcr / antigen test before leaving the U.K. and need to show when arriving in Germany , however looking on other websites it doesn’t mention the need for a test … confused.com don’t want to arrive at LhR and then be denied boarding

    • Ja says:

I was just looking at that. It says for Canada you have to quarantine even if you are vaxxed which I think is wrong

      • Rosie says:

Fco website doesn’t mention it either however if you check on the German federal office advice , it says u do need a test for arrival , plus as the U.K. is classed as area of concern antigen rapid test has to be taken within 24 hours (not 48)

      • Tracey says:

I thought Canada said you had to have a quarantine plan, in case you were in contact with someone positive

    • GeorgeJ says:

Why are you using a Sky news site for something as important as this, these sources are often hopelessly out of date. Use the official German Government site or reopen EU (the official EU site, which in turn accesses national guidance).
You will need to complete a passenger locator form but vaccinated persons are exempt from testing and quarantine. You will probably be asked to show proof of vaccination, though on my latest journey I was just asked if I had taken the vaccine (though my hotel in Stuttgart asked to see proof).

      • Rosie says:

I looked on the fco website , no mention of a test in the U.K. , looked on the German website and you do need test and as we are high risk area it says to be taken 24 hours before arrival (antigen rapid test)

        • Pete M says:

Definitely no test needed to go from the UK to Germany if fully jabbed. Do the journey every couple of weeks.

      • Harry T says:

Agreed, go straight to the source of the information and guidance. The FCDO is a good starting point as they usually link to the right local resources.

        • Pete M says:

Except that the local source is often unclear and/or in poor English, so people end up even more confused, like in this case 🙂

    • Mike says:

      Hi Rosie,
I’ve just got back from Germany after 3 and bit weeks there. You just need to be double vaccinated and complete their plf. That’s it. I had the PLF and vaccine cert printed out and the immigration guy thanked me for being organised. I did need to show my vaccine cert at the hotel so worth having ready. You can show your phone instead, but I don’t like giving my phone to people, one slip and I’d be without my phone for the trip (especially problematic if all your certs etc. are on there).

  • stevenhp1987 says:

About an hour after I called them it seems I’ve been manually verified!

    Quite quick!

  • David says:

Returning a hire car to Heathrow tomorrow evening – any local info on the petrol situation as would prefer not to give Hertz the job of filling at £4/litre.

    • N says:

changing every hour. tesco yeading is regularly popping up on my local fb group as being a station with fuel, but it is a good few miles away from LHR!

    • graham says:

fill up within 40 miles of LHR to the brim and it will still show full on return and even at motorway prices you will save

    • Allan says:

They told me last time they were doing it for 1.24 per litre but the bill seemed higher. Waiting to hear back after contesting it.

      • graham says:

In my experience I think that price is if you buy a full tank on collection and return empty, which is obviously impossible, (they also believe that the tank holds more than the manufacturer of the car does), rather the fill up price on return

        • Allan says:

Ah! So I fell for it!
The guy made out that it was a better deal. He also failed to remove the extra insurance on one of the 2 cars I hired and charged for an extra driver despite being am Amex plat code booking.

    • Scallder says:

Esso on the Southern Perimeter Road yesterday was all fine – no caps on amount to fill up. Unleaded was 143.9p/litre

    • AL says:

      Four quid a litre!?

  • Andrew H says:

Is CHE fairly safe with VACC+? Have a Euro deposit to pay for a skiing holiday.

    • Youllnever says:

I believe you’ll get hit with the 5% cash advance fee immediately so no.

      • idontflymuch says:

@Youllnever but if I top up ernie I will be ok with metal bendy?

        • Youllnever says:

I believe it’s still okay for now, but they’ve updated their T&C to say these payments will be charged the cash advance fee – when that comes into effect, nobody knows.

      • Aston100 says:

Have you tried overloading Beardy before paying Che?
Its fine when doing this with Solihull to Che without any fees (or is when I try it now and again).

        • Youllnever says:

Solihull is different though – they didn’t charge the cash advance fee but rather only the daily interest, hence why it worked – credit balance wouldn’t change this.

          • idontflymuch says:

surely this route is still open until Solihull close the cards on the 3rd Dec no?

    • idontflymuch says:

not for me, topped up CHE with Bendy backed by VACC+ and got 5% cash charge.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Using bendy serves no purpose as they pass through the original MCC and you can use credit cards to top up directly

    • Jeff Greene says:

Use a fruit machine to top up your flake 99 and then use the interest from your Ford Focus to generate some extra points

  • Thomas says:

Planning next US trip… So with Astra/Zeneca vaccine you are considered “fully vaccinated” or not?

  • Thomas says:

I believe we should be good: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/travel-during-covid19.html
“* This guidance applies to COVID-19 vaccines currently authorized for emergency use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration: Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson (J&J)/Janssen COVID-19 vaccines. This guidance can also be applied to COVID-19 vaccines that have been listed for emergency use by the World Health Organization (e.g. AstraZeneca/Oxford). See WHO’s website external iconfor more information about WHO-authorized COVID-19 vaccines.”

    • Sandgrounder says:

You are too quick for me and my unrefreshed mobile page Thomas 🙂
