Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Assuming President Biden allows the opening up, I have booked Avios redemptions 4x CW outbound to LAX on Xmas Day and return (in economy, booo!) 4th January.
Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has helped with advice on this booking, and also to everyone who has kindly given tips on collecting Avios, that has allowed me to give the kids a nice Xmas treat.
    Cheers!

    • FFoxSake says:

Nice. Hope it all works out for you (and that Rudolph and co. manage to pull alongside for Santa deliver the prezzies…)

    • Mikeact says:

Shame you couldn’t get CW on the red-eye back home and down the back on the way out.

      • Freddy says:

That my aim when travelling to USA. Though when I crunched the numbers, economy out and club world return, with taxes to the USA, I just ended up paying cash and will probably cash out to nectar

  • Stephen says:

Newbie question (sorry) – after flying QSuite to Maldives I am a bit more inclined to fly with them in future 🙂 If I want to get TP on my BAEC do I have to book direct with BA or not? May well look to fly QR from somewhere in Europe so not bookable on ba.com. My BAEC account is attached to my Privilege Club account to earn avios – just wondering if thats enough to get me the TP as well?

    • Rob says:

No, you get BA TP on ALL Qatar Airways flights. Just ensure that no Privilege Club number is entered, just your BAEC number.

    • TGLoyalty says:

No need to book via BA to collect TP on Qatar flights (same for all full oneworld members)

  • Degsy says:

Liking the new banner/picture for the daily chat thread. Very autumnal 🍂

  • Stealthy_singh says:

Fairly newbie question. I’ve got CW flights booked to Japan with a companion voucher, no status. Let’s say by some miracle first seats open up and I get to upgrade. If I paid for seat selection in CW what would happen to those as I think you get free seat selection in First anyway? Does it get refunded?

    • Jonathan says:

You need to refer to some articles in the past about getting refunds on seat selection with BA, in short it’s easier said than done, people have their flights cancelled, and not had their seat selection booking fee refunded.

First Class with BA doesn’t charge a fee for seat selection

      • Stealthy_singh says:

        Thank you! 🙂

      • FatherOfFour says:

Had mine refunded via an online form after my flights were cancelled. In retrospect, I was a bit hasty, as I booked under the “Avios sale” and understand that if I FTV my flight, the seat booking would be wrapped up in it. Presumably at the same equivalent seat value.

      • Lady London says:

…and you should not accept BA not refunding your seat selection fees if you chose a refund when they cancelled your flight. Cheap of BA even to try this.

  • Joe says:

Any way to pay British Gas with amex ?
The bill says you can pay at post office or payzone but not sure how this works is it like paypoint where you need to have a special barcode?

    • AL says:

Yes. You take your bill along and they use Paypoint. Paypoint doesn’t accept Amex. No way to pay BG with Amex unless via Billhop.

  • David says:

There are FHR rates where the $100-125 amenity is more than the room rate – anyone else spotted any ?

    • Rob says:

Vegas is often a good place to look.

      • David says:

Yup vegas was where I was looking -£80 room rate $125 property spend.

        • Blair says:

$80 room mate….and then a resort fee….and then tax on said resort fee.

          • The Savage Squirrel says:

            True.

It’s also a reflection that Vegas rooms are still (although to a much lesser degree than times past) subsidised by the casino that is sitting underneath them.

    • Ikaz says:

China can get close sometimes, I am guessing other parts of Asia also

  • TheOtherN says:

Odd. Can’t check in online with BA (BCN-LHR). “Sorry, we cannot complete online check-in for your flight on this occasion.” No option to add PLF/Vax info on Manage My Booking.

Is this related to Oct 4 changes? General BA IT issues? Anyone else having issues?

I’m handbaggage only. I don’t fancy standing in line at check-in counter.

    • Reeferman says:

I had the same problem on Friday – RTM/LCY. I heard the guy in the check in line in front of me saying the same thing.
Seems to be a(nother) BA IT issue!

    • Harry T says:

They need to check your documents at the airport so you will have to check in there. It’s happened to me a couple of times abroad.

  • CD says:

SUGGESTION: a heading and sub-head that everyone must fill out for comments. Would make it easier to scroll through/pick up on info. Also, some formats like this automatically put the person to whom you are replying into the text box (NextDoor does this), making it a bit clearer who is responding to whom (and with the auto Header and Sub head, this would be easier to follow )

    • Rob says:

I think the move to a forum this Autumn will remove a lot of extraneous comment chat. We have now commissioned the IT work required (after admitting defeat on trying to do it ourselves) so it is happening – unless some IT issue comes up which we can’t solve.

      • Youllnever says:

Any update on dark mode as well? My eyes thanks you at night 🙂

        • Rhys says:

          Nope, sorry!

          • Rob says:

It has also defeated our attempts to do it properly via a DIY effort. We’d need throw a couple of £k at our IT guy to get it. Not saying we won’t do it but this is not exactly a bumper year revenue-wise.

        • Sloth says:

          Just turn the brightness down…

        • John says:

Use a browser that does it for you – I use Opera on phone

      • Gormlesstraveller says:

Extraneous comment chat helps camouflage the grey areas / loopholes that many of us can’t resist coming back to read about. The more that those grey areas / loopholes are in the open, the quicker C2DEs from [insert other site] will link to them and fill their boots. (I confess that I am a C2DE who got here from another site!)

      • Voltron says:

Have you tried turning it off and on…

      • BlueHorizonUK says:

Maybe have a daily COVID Vaccine Do I/Dont I thread will clear up these general comment posts no end 😂

    • ChrisC says:

You should see some of the nonsense that people put in thread titles / post titles on flyer talk so I wouldn’t rely in people putting something in that is meaningful without a lot of editing.

      • John says:

There’s one moderator who puts their entire message in the post title (if it’s a short one-liner at least)
