The HfP chat thread – Sunday 3rd October

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Are there specific times of year to be on the lookout for a proper business class sale from Qatar or is it just a bit random? I know they have obviously done a few ad hoc things for Covid.

    • ChrisC says:

I’ve given up waiting for or looking for “sales”

I’ve got some good deals by just looking and I book if the price is acceptable.

I’ve seen non sale fares lower than supposed sale fares.

    • Andrew says:

Qatar sort of stopped doing sales a few years ago – used to be great to get a bargain fare and secure your BA status but now their sale prices are no lower than the week before the sale.

      • Rob says:

Amsterdam to Cape Town is currently £1330 …. not sure how low you want to go. You will never see super-cheap UK fares again because Qatar Airways and BA now have a price-fixing JV on the UK-Doha part of the route.

        • Stephen says:

ah ok great thanks. I just put together a matrix of QR to 30 odd destinations with start point of London plus 10 other places in Europe. I saw that AMS-CPT deal you referenced. Munich, Brussels, Paris, Amsterdam and Oslo all look pretty decent starting points for a wide range of destinations. Anything under £1500 for a long haul business return should be considered a great deal I guess? If anyone wants to follow my trip to Maldives, MLE is available from £1544 if you launch from Paris! £1227 to Singapore from Stockholm, £1259 to Kuala Lumpur from Brussels

So Creation moved everyone to electronic statements last month, but neither my partner nor I have a PDF statement to download for September (despite both having balances). Any one else noticed this problem? Worth a complaint to keep them busy?

    • Andrew says:

The last business day of September was Thursday.

Tomorrow is only the 2nd business day of the month, you’re being silly.

      • ee says:

You’re being silly assuming our statement dates are the end of the month. In fact I think all creation CC statements come out around 23rd of each month.

My partner changed the account her Direct Debit comes from so was looking for the statement to confirm it has been set-up and will collect properly.

    • planeconcorde says:

My creation statement is usually 24th, 25th or 26th of the month. My September pdf is still not available to view or download. A balance is due for payment. August 2021 was the last paper statement I have received was received. Thanks for posting as I was wondering if it was just me.

      • Sandra says:

Mine is around the 23rd/24/25th of the month usually and the pdf was actually issued on the 23rd of September – it was the annual statement. Never had paper statements so can’t comment on those.

      • ee says:

Nope it seems not – just another example of Creations shocking service!

    • Yorkieflyer says:

No statements for the Mrs and me either normally 21st and website says balance due on 11th October, paid both and good riddance

  • Tracey says:

My double tier points from BA Holidays promotion haven’t appeared. Outbound nor return, it’s now 38 days and 31 days. What is the least hassle way of getting in touch with BA?

    • Optimus Prime says:

Use the contact form on your BAEC account. I got mine 48 hours later.

  • Gareth says:

BA have cancelled my flight to Capetown in mid November Avios 241. I haven’t responded to email. It looks like South Africa may be taken off the red list. If BA starts flying again to S.A., I presume I can just ask them to reinstate my ticket. Which is why I haven’t taken voucher, or cash back just done nothing

    • JSemity says:

I think you could also push for re-routing rights on another airline

  • BSI1978 says:

    Happy Sunday chums!

    Cape Town early February, recommended?

From the modest DD I’ve done thus far, should be ok and still relatively temperate. Neither too warm or overly hot – fair?

    • AJA says:

Weather in Cape Town in Feb is great, max temp should be around 29 celcius. I think February is the best time of year to visit, not as crowded as December.

      • Genghis says:

Agreed. Best time to visit. Was 37°C in Franschhoek in Feb 20 but around 30°C in the city.

    • Aaron C says:

      It’s lovely then.

    • Gareth says:

Great time but still busy. If you have time also rent a car a soft 4×4 if possibland go inland for wine I’d reccomend Roberston valley ,just through Hugenout tunnel rather than busy Stellenbosch , Frankshoek. Also the back road from Ceres to Clanwilliam amazing. Langebaan to the north is one of the best kite/wind surfing spits in world.

  • Ben says:

    Hi
I need to up my amex payments to meet the bonus sign up. Is there a way I can pay my council tax or something else using Amex?
    Cheers!

    • N says:

Can you get a Paypoint barcode for your Ctax? For your gas and elec? For your water bill?

If yes, take the barcode(s) with you to your local coop.

    • Graham Walsh says:

Top up your amazon account. It will get used over time if spend with them.

    • Rosie says:

Ppal friends and family , one off ok however wouldn’t recommend multiple transactions as Amex /ppal could close account

      • Super Secret Stuff says:

+1 should be ok if it is a reasonable amount as a one off. Max once every 6 months to be safe

        • FFoxSake says:

Can you define reasonable please? Sub 1K as a one-off?

        • Swiss Jim says:

Any experience of using eBay offers (max listing fee £1 etc) to sell to your better half at the same address? She’s really keen on buying some things I own. Using her supplementary platinum card linked to my account of course….

          • Swiss Jim says:

She pays off whatever she spends btw. I just get the points…

          • John says:

If that card has never been used on ebay before (paypal doesn’t count as it isn’t linked), make a new ebay account using public wifi (or VPN with a UK IP address) and enter a fake address.

They don’t match address to card but they do monitor for multiple accounts. Although I’ve shill bid on my own items with alt accounts many times and nothing ever happened

  • Joints&Piles says:

Anyone been able to use the Hertz double points offer?
When I try a quote for renting at LBA or NCL or MAN it says “you cannot return the vehicle to the location specified”, even if I don’t use the promo code.
At other locations eg LHR it says “not all requirements for the promotion coupon have been met”.
The terms are 1 day or more, any car class, until 5th December, at “participating locations”. I can’t find any list of participating locations.
Hertz IT is even worse than ever. Right now I can’t book a rental at LBA or NCL or MAN even without the promo code, even with my Amex discount turned off.

    • Yorkie Aid says:

No amount of points would ever make it worth using Hertz. Go with Enterprise and save yourself loads of hassle.

      • Super Secret Stuff says:

Avis are a pain and now just sub contract everything to someone else. Only hassle free option is Enterprise. OH works for them and they are good with any wear and tear or minor damage. They factor it in to every rental and just absorb things up to a limit

    • Blenz101 says:

Only Hertz location that was letting me pick up was Leeds South a couple of months ago. Dropped it back at LHR and used a discount code.

    • Joints&Piles says:

Turns out Hertz at LBA is closed permanently, though the website can’t be bothered to say so.

  • BP says:

Do you get IHG points for F&B spend at Six Senses? No points given for my recent SSDV stay. Not sure whether to chase it up.

    • Toppcat says:

I chased it up, and was told that the hotel isn’t integrated into IHG Rewards yet, so no points.

    • meta says:

Zero points. I asked and they said SSDV is not participating in IHG Rewards program. Yet, they give benefits based on status and we could book it on points! I pushed and said the above. Got 3000 points as a gesture of goodwill. I was hoping for much more than that, but I left it at that.
