The HfP chat thread – Saturday 2nd October

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

HfP Kindle Unlimited readers: 2 Months free ATM,just Googling ‘Kindle Unlimited should bring up the page. Might also work if you just sign in and access it from within your account.

    • Lady London says:

Is this the one where you don’t keep the books after the trial, or is that Audible?

      • QFFlyer says:

That’s Kindle unlimited (normal Kindle you keep the books you purchase), everything you buy/get with Audible, you keep.

      • BJ says:

@LadyLondon, it’s as QF explained. With audible just be sure to use up any credits before cancelling subscription or you lose them. There is a good guide to getting the best out of audible on MSE. Kindle Unlimited is essentially a library while audible is essentially a store. Now that most audiobooks are unabridged I have come to love audible as you can listen whilst doing mundane chores. New Reacher book out 26/10, not do good as tge early years anymore though.

    Morrisons sold.
RIP 10% deals and the multi-stacking.

    • Sloth says:

I think more to the point RIP Morrison’s…bet it won’t be around in 20 years time…

    • Andrew says:

Got my 10% deal at Sainsbury’s on BoS and 5% on MBNA.

  • James says:

Does anyone know if my wife signs up for the Amex Bonvoy card, for the bonus that I can’t get, can the points and night credits go to my Bonvoy account in my name?

    • Rob says:

No, but she can ring up and transfer the points to you for free. Can’t transfer the 15 nights.

  • Saiz says:

BA cancelled our flightd to Istanbul in July. Can I ask for a full refund or do I have to take a FTV?

    • Richie says:

You must be offered a refund.

      • Saiz says:

        Thanks.

      • ChasP says:

you are entitled to choose between a refund, rebooking to a time of your choice or a rerouting on another airline – what you are offered by BA (esp initially) is a different question

    • Lady London says:

Can also choose own preferred date to rebook to, whenever, and without needing avios seat availability even if you’d used avios for all or part of your booking.

  • Josu says:

sorry for the repeated question but hoping for a definitive answer!

Does beardy charge cash advance fees instantly or do we need to wait until the statement? Current have a pending transaction that might be classed as cash advance but would like to know when I can say for certain before spending more.

    Thanks

  • Can says:

Wife plans to fly to NYC with our toddler to visit family during Christmas. We were wondering how strict the mask policy for 3y olds aboard. We’ve heard a lot of stupid horror stories, and wondering if any of you have had any experience?

    • Anna says:

It depends on the airline, some mandate for over 2, some for over 5 etc.

    • Froggee says:

It varies by airline so nobody will be able to offer definitive help.

    • Harry T says:

Why would a three year old need to wear a mask?

    • GHT says:

Just fly BA, children under 11 exempt from requirement to wear a mask

      • Andrew says:

Quote from “The Washington Post”, 28th September:-

“If TSA’s age limit is lower than a foreign air carrier’s age limit, the TSA age requirement applies and the younger child must wear a mask,” spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein said in an email.

That means foreign tourists who may have traveled under less-strict rules outside of the United States will need to prepare young kids to mask up for any visit to the country once the widespread travel ban is lifted in early November.

        • Froggee says:

          Wow. I missed that.

        • Can says:

That’s the problem exactly. But I am wondering how much that will be enforced in reality in nonUS airlines.

          • Lyn says:

That may apply only to domestic flights within the US, where I think the rule is indeed that children over 2 must wear masks.

  • GaryE says:

Booked the Hyatt Andaz via Emyr – is there a way of spending the F&B credit of $100 on lunch and drinks after you have checked out. Going out with friends for dinner and breakfast is included, but unless we get a late checkout out hotel tab will have been closed. Any suggestions appreciated

    • meta says:

Just ask the hotel not to close the folio until later, but vacate the room.

    • Ikaz says:

I used it on lunch on checkout day when I stayed there

      • GaryE says:

Were you able to check out after lunch – or did they allow you to keep your hotel folio open until then?

    • Crafty says:

Be aware that service charges at F&B outlets must be paid by you and cannot be funded by the credit.

  • aviosnewbie says:

thanks to everyone who posted about LA yesterday – so I booked flights and we’ll be spending 8 days over Christmas. I also booked 2 nights using the Ambassador certificate at the Intercontinental in Downtown LA. My other nights are still open, and I’m thinking it will be good to split the stay somewhere else than just downtown. Are there any hotel recommendations? – I’m thinking of beverly hills or hollywood…going by the comments yesterday, I’ll probably not rent a car for the entire trip (maybe just for a day). Should we consider a day trip somewhere, or is there enough in LA for 8 days? thanks again!

    • Kevin C says:

Hilton Beverly Hills is worth a look.

I like the area of West Hollywood. Some great hotels in that area. Sunset Marquis, Sunset Tower are two. You could always stay a couple of nights in Santa Monica.

    • Richie says:

Consider some nights around Newport Beach.

    • Simon says:

West Hollywood Edition is very nice if you have any Bonvoy points to redeem.
