The HfP chat thread – Saturday 2nd October

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Silly “spend £1 get 50 MR” in my Amex gold… what are they trying to do with these?

    • Peter K says:

Seeing as I got an email saying “enjoy winning with Amex offers” promoting this, I assume this is a surprise and delight exercise.

    • Jonathan says:

I’ve got the ARCC card, and my offers don’t appear to update themselves very often at all, I’m using the card enough. Anyone reckon I should try and draw attention to this ? When Rob mentioned about bonus MR points on all (selected) personal MR earning cards nothing showed up for me

    • Mikeact says:

      Ancient news..

    • AJA says:

Be grateful you got at least that. It’s an easy offer to trigger. I didn’t get anything on my BAPP. Instead I have 97 offers that are useless to me.

    • Adam says:

      Going NS&I – route 🤣

  • Definitas says:

Following on from yesterday’s post about Collinson PCR test at Luton. Despite both tests done together (drive through) and being on one booking, Mrs Definitas’s results came back this morning just over 12 hours after mine (and within the 48 hour time limit). I expected an email when both had been done rather than coming separately so was worried hers had gone astray. When there was still nothing this morning I was really starting to stress so it was a relief when it popped into my inbox just after 0800. I don’t know if it is common knowledge that they can come separately so may be useful information for anyone else in the same situation

    • Tracey says:

Had similar with NWP. Postal test, both posted back together, RM tracking showed they had both arrived at the lab together, results came through one at 25 hours one at 31 hours after posting.

    • lumma says:

I worked for the NHS testing for a little while, what’s likely to have happened there is that couriers come throughout the day and one has been taken almost immediately and the second one has sat around on the site and collected by the next courier

  • YC says:

Just noticed hyatt have a new unbound collection in Florence (Il Tournabuoni). Anyone have any info on this? Looks bookable on OTAs but not hyatt. Looks like just a rebranding and no renovations?

  • tony says:

Last night I was in BA’s MMB. I came across a “change my flight” screen where it didn’t tell you the exact cost to change, only that the fare difference was “low”. It looked like a legacy screen. I can’t for the life of me find it again, and can only get the new one that shows the price in situ. Any thoughts where I should be looking?

Curiously, when I clicked through on the legacy screen the fare difference was about half that which was quoted on the new screen.

    • Peter K says:

Try looking in your browser history?

      • Tony says:

Tried that but it takes me to pages that won’t load. The uplift seems wrong on the screen I can see as I booked D class which is free for the change and I only need to pay the fare uplift. V. odd…

What’s excluded from qualifying for the Virgin card sign up bonus £3k spend? Would car finance payments count? Ovo energy top up? Gift cards/amazon top up? I’ve also got an Amex sign up bonus to chase so don’t want to divert too much spend away from that.

    • TGLoyalty says:

All of those apart from car finance (might be considered cash) are straight forward purchases.

  • Sarah says:

Can anyone recommend an IHG hotel in Europe to go to for a few days over Christmas holidays with a 13 year old? Don’t have much preference other than must have an indoor pool and reasonable climate (if that’s possible!) as just want a break away.

    • Anna says:

It depends what you call reasonable weather! For temperatures above 60f you’re really looking at southern Spain but IHG doesn’t have much beyond HIs there. There’s an IC in Malta which might be an option?

    • tony says:

I think you’re going to struggle on the climate front, so why not go somewhere wintery instead? And I mean properly wintery, not the endless grey we’ll inevitably have here between Christmas & New Year? Pickings don’t seem great but I see there’s a Holiday Inn in Andorra with an indoor pool???

      • Tony1 says:

Long bus ride from Toulouse or BCN – think about £40 each way pp – nice views though – if you can find it this years Tour did the run through from Andorra to Toulouse

    • Harry T says:

Amstel Amsterdam if you don’t mind being cold – I don’t know what reasonable climate means for you 😊

  • Malte says:

I’d appreciate some advice on my rights under EC261/2004. Virgin have just cancelled our return flights from NYC (back to London), but claimed it’s a schedule change when notifying me. The flight number has changed and the original flight disappeared. The outbound (LHR-JFK) is unaffected.

Since the flight leaves before travel restrictions eased I’d prefer both outbound and return be rebooked to a later date. Do I have a right to do this, or would EC241 only cover the return flight in this case? Just trying to determine whether I’ve been lucky – the fare was very low, so if I change it to a voucher I won’t get a similarly good deal.

    • Babyg says:

they will let you rebook (pretty much any date) if they cancelled …

    • Lady London says:

You are correct. HUACA till you get it. Don’t back down

      • Malte says:

Thanks, that’s very helpful – I have a bit of time, so don’t mind trying several times.

    • Jonathan says:

Have you called or filled in the rescheduling form on their website? Not sure if you’re saying they’ve denied your request or seeking clarification based on wording of e-mail.

Virgin have upped their game recently. They are now offering rescheduling any date until April ’23 so you shouldn’t have any issues. New flight number = cancellation in anyone’s book.

      • Malte says:

I’ve called, but Virgin claim it’s been rescheduled rather than cancelled. The actual flight has disappeared and we have a new flight number, so it seems clear cut. Will try again – only hoping to reschedule to March next year.

        • Paul says:

Fill in the form on their webpage requesting a rebooking. Took nearly a week but they sorted mine out (and that was with far shakier grounds than yours sounds)

  • Craig says:

Just downloaded Verifly for a trip home on the 5th. It’s still asking for a fit to fly test?

    • TGLoyalty says:

      Just upload your vaccine cert?

      • meta says:

Check that you updated the app. I believe there was an update earlier this week.

    • Craig says:

Well there’s a good start, upload vaccine QR code. Any unexpected error occurred, see log files, what log files?

      • Craig says:

Went to do a manual review and it appears I’m filling things in too soon!
