The HfP chat thread – Saturday 2nd October

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I was reading another comment from last night. I also applied for a VM M Plus account and application decision got deferred – anyone else had same issue? It seemed an easy way to get 15k virgin points.

    • Doug M says:

I think that’s often linked to verification of info, stuff like your address.

      • James says:

It’s just that for virgin credit card application I got approved straight away 🤔

  • Michael C says:

Should we be worried about our children being taught creation theory at school?…

  • Matty says:

Curve metal – annual fee due in a couple of weeks. I want to switch to paying the fee monthly. Is there a way to do that in the app or do I have to contact CS?

  • SwissJim says:

I think I know the answer to this, but I will ask anyway. Is there any way of searching the site for old chat posts? Specifically, I want to look back to a question I asked and (clearly I’m getting old) can’t remember the answer to. I know there a search bar at the top, but I can’t get it to work in that way…. I also know I can pull up old chats by day, but going through pages on chat over several days is a little laborious (though something I’m thinking I will have to do…). Thanks.

    • Copperknob says:

Assuming Google is your search engine, in the browser bar type:
      site:headforpoints.com swissjim
You’ll get a list of all your posts.

      • Froggee says:

And if you post far too often so thousands of posts and there is a key word in the question, let’s say sausages, then type sausages in inverted commas, thusly “sausages”.

      • BuildBackBetter says:

You can also filter by date

      • SwissJim says:

        Brilliant, thanks.!

    • Rhys says:

We don’t have an internal search because it was killing the site speed unfortunately.

      • Anuj says:

It would surely be easy to have a comment search box on here where it just directs you to Google with site:headforpoints.com and then the query pre-filled for those who don’t know of that Google feature.

    • Paul says:

SwissJim, previously you suggested our departing friend could join a revolution directly and I wondered if there was any conditions to head straight there?

  • Wollhouse says:

Laughing….. which after my hours on hold and subsequent chat with Virgin credit card service is saying something,,,, just opened yesterday’s post. The first, a new IHG credit card as mine was expiring…. The second, my cancellation. Honestly, they could have saved themselves a stamp and popped them into the same envelope 😉

  • Paul says:

The “Spend £5,000 by 30 November and get 10,000 Avios” offer on BAPP:

My partner has hit the £5k spend and triggered the bonus, however has now received a refund for the triggering spend. The 10k avios have been immediately debited, which isn’t an issue as she will make the spend again by 30th Nov. However the offer has now disappeared from her available or recently redeemed offers, and so I’m wondering if this bonus will be reapplied upon making the (re)qualifying spend?

    • AJA says:

I’m not sure it will but in theory it should do provided the spend is before the end of November. I would screenshot the credit and subsequent removal of the 10k Avios and then call Amex when the spend goes back over £5k ie she can show further spend greater than the amount refunded.

      • Paul says:

Thanks, will pass on! Amex seem a but less flexible these days but hopefully this will be black and white if having to reach out.

        • Andrew says:

I think it must be fine, after all just a £1 refund could push you back under the threshold you met yesterday and then you spend again today and you’re back over. Otherwise what they are saying is you can’t have any refunds to your card on the days following when you hit the threshold.

  • Britbronco says:

Now Ernie is punishing us by delaying the results today

    • Reney says:

your email prompted me to check! I never win anything so don’t bother checking. I won £25 😀. First time ever how exciting.

    • Lawrence Hardy says:

Yes, the delay is disappointing. Results still not showing on the app. I check just after Midnight and most results are usually available but it’s usually two working days into the month before they are announced which makes me think someone’s made a mistake this time, or we will have to wait until later this morning.

      • Alan says:

Results are available by logging in on the website itself. For some reason the app is not updating this morning.

      • Lawrence Hardy says:

Thanks Alan and HH. Will look now.

    • HH says:

They’ve confirmed on Twitter it’s an app issue but results are online at http://nsandi.com/prize-checker

    • JSemity says:

Ernie has rewarded my efforts with £100! Never got that much from them before. Still, paltry in comparison to pulling the 50k out and investing (long term returns).

    • Ali M says:

and here I thought I won big for once and hence the delay ,lol

    • Ikaz says:

      I also won £25

  • Alejandro says:

Good morning! Is it possible to pay off the balance on Amex Gold with my Spanish debit card? Thank you

    • Youllnever says:

No harm in trying and seeing from what I can see?

      • Alejandro says:

Don’t want to try and get my Amex card closed, so any ifnormation will be appeciated!

        • TGLoyalty says:

It won’t be closed it just won’t work.

          I don’t see why it wouldn’t work

          • Ikaz says:

Using curve you might be able to, your Spanish account might not appreciate it and might charge interest

          • John says:

Interest on a debit card? Only if they go into overdraft…

    • BuildBackBetter says:

Why wouldn’t a debit card work?

    • QFFlyer says:

I tried it once with Australian debit cards, no dice – assume it has to be a UK one, but you never know, maybe they treat European ones differently.
