We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Any thoughts on the Chase UK bank account which appears to be offering 1% cash back?

    • Rob says:

Weak deal, no Section 75 on debit card spend, lots of exclusions to 1%.

      • CarpalTravel says:

And the card is really bland looking….

      • jack charlton says:

Is there another free card that offers 1% back on all purchases in cash, and is taken virtually everywhere ?

The exclusions list for chase, result in cash advance fees and daily interest with most credit cards.

        • jack charlton says:

or when you said weak, do you mean they would not partner with you for the launch ? 🙂

          • Rob says:

We don’t work with bank products which don’t have a miles or points option.

Your 1% means you are giving up a) normal card rewards which are worth FAR more than 1%, eg BA Amex 2-4-1 and b) S75 protection. And its just for a year. Do you really want to swap your current account for that?

If it was a credit card offering 1% then we’d be very positive about it.

          • Youllnever says:

They’re not forcing you to swap or switch current accounts though, so I’m not sure that point stands.

    • DJ says:

For day to day shopping is fine. Though I’m only using it as a backup current account and for foreign currency transactions.

A little bit disappointed that direct debit is not supported yet.

    • Youllnever says:

Good for use on the weekend when travelling abroad.

      • Sophie says:

What about the “Boost your savings with 5% interest on round-ups”? Could you make a whole load of individual transactions for £0.01 (stamps?) and get 5% interest on the £0.99?

  • Sunny says:

Is there a way to search for the extra seats that are made available with the new companion voucher, without triggering the voucher?

    • Peter K says:

If you have the voucher in your account then do a search using it, just don’t book with it.
Otherwise, no I don’t think so.

  • Simon says:

Is there anyone who has triggered a new 2-4-1 who could do me a favour. Looking for 4 business class LHR-FNC departing 10 August returning 24 August – want to see if it opens up seats and worthwhile triggering mine

    • JDB says:

Don’t have a new voucher to help you but on ExpertFlyer for those dates it shows:
J9 C9 D2 R2 I0 – exactly the same outbound and inbound, so it doesn’t look like anything extra will come up. It does show 3 Avios Club seats outbound and 7 inbound.

    • MW says:

Out 2, back 4, so doesn’t seem to align with I buckets for some reason.

    • Peter K says:

There are 2 business out, 4 business back.

Price for a 12 day car hire from Hertz in Birmingham city centre on their own website is £1092.62 (pay on collection).
Exact same car, dates and payment arrangements when made through Priceline = £277.23
I note however, that Priceline presumes your licence is issued in the USA.

Anyone know if this is going to go wrong if I go ahead and turn up at the Hertz branch with my UK licence?

I know that whenever I have hired cars from elsewhere, my licence is checked, but I don’t know if they compare it against the country of issue on the booking.
    Any thoughts?

    • Brighton Belle says:

Just don’t bend the car and force them to trawl through your documentation. “Sir….you actual licence and what you told us don’t agree. The insurance cover was therefore voided.” Chances are a broker will get you a sensible price without taking an insurance risk.

    • Rich says:

Prices for the US market tend to have low or even zero insurance, because most renters will be covered by their own cover.

    • Reeferman says:

Coincidentally, I emailed Priceline on this very subject a few days ago (the price for my car hire in USA more-than doubled when I switched to UK for driving licence!)
Priceline gave a very clear response saying leave it as USA as the information isn’t passed on to anyone – it only says USA to obtain their discount codes/rates

      • Aston100 says:

        Thanks guys.
Just found a car directly through Sixt for about £260.
I’ve got beef with Sixt and they are not happy I did an amex charge back for an upgrade fee that they weren’t supposed to charge.
Guess I’ll have to get the wife to book it with their supp card and hope the address doesn’t raise a flag!

    • Reney says:

Last week I did a road trip in Scotland. I booked a car via expedia.com which is cheaper because it is the US version and includes NO insurance. I checked with Amex plat and they said that’s ok. Europcar said they cannot let me take the car without any insurance no matter what I said about my amex. They would only let me take the car with basic insurance added. Which worked out slightly more expensive than had I booked a car from a UK website. So my lesson is Don’t book via a US site for the UK (unless you are actually American resident?) I think the insurance at the counter was twice the price than if I purchased the expedia.com add on.

      • Reney says:

Europcar said at the counter*. I did not call ahead to check. Probably should have.

  • r* says:

An update on the issues I was having getting BA to move a cancelled flight to a new date that was outside of 12 months of the original ticketing date but within 12 months of the flight date incase it helps anyone… they have now moved it to my new date via twitter. Took like 2 weeks of messaging and was probably due to getting a good CS agent rather than BA changing policy again, but it avoided the need to mcol.

  • Nicky says:

Sorry if already asked….but is there any hint on when sleepy Joe is going to re-open the US borders yet??????

    • Save East Coast Rewards says:

Feels like he only said this so the UK and EU leaders didn’t keep hassling him about it!

    • ChrisC says:

Don’t know about “sleepy Joe” but President Biden will announce the date when all the regulatory ducks have been aligned and this being the US it’s not an easy thing to do when you need several departments to sort themselves out.

      • Blair says:

Nonsense though; that argument only holds water if the US had been closed to ALL arrivals for the last 18 months.

  • Dave says:

Hi all. Does any know if you re-sign up for Amex Business Gold (after 7/8 month gap – half previously for year) whether they try and re-verify the business? Nothing underhanded going on, but it was just a pain to get the necessary evidence sorted the first time for various reasons and would rather avoid a re-run! Trying to make the call between business gold and platinum (clearly much bigger bonus on the latter, but a significant cost attached, even if I don’t keep it long term..)

    • Rob says:

It’s bizarre they even asked for verification. They never asked for anything re HfP and we have no corporate structure.
