The HfP chat thread – Thursday 30th September

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

If a concert is cancelled should the Booking Fees and Ticket Download Fee be refunded with the Ticket Cost? Alt Tickets say not, however I’d have assumed the Consumer Rights Act would have required it as no service has been supplied.

It’s small beans, so more interested about views than actually chasing the company for the money.

    • JDB says:

A bit of a grey area. They should have told you at the time of booking that “the booking and transaction fee is non-refundable” which are their terms. They will say that they have provided the service, it’s not their fault the concert was cancelled etc. It is questionable whether that is fair but realistically may not be worth the effort of pursuing a small sum.

    • Memesweeper says:

I’d say say it’s unfair and thus a breach of consumer rights act. IANAL.

      • Lady London says:

Unfair. Same as BA refusing to refund seat reservation fees that ‘have become part of the flight’ when they refund flights they cancelled, also won’t stand up in court.

        • Matt says:

Ticketmaster refunded all but about £2 recently, which I wasn’t too bothered by. Seetickets kept £9 of about £45 total, which I’m attempting to charge back through Amex.

Not 100% sure which way the law falls, but from my point of view I’ve paid to attend a gig that isn’t happening. If you say the charge includes a booking fee, an admin fee, a toilet provision fee, a bar staff fee etc makes no difference to me.

  • CM says:

Just had an email from BA moving my LGW-AGP flights next year to LHR. Same times / flight numbers!

    • Richie says:

Yes it seems many have been moved to LHR.

    • Gruntfuttock says:

Me too, LGW – TIR, now to LHR, earlier by 2hrs all round. Happy with outcome all in all

    • Marina says:

Thanks for info I’ll keep a watch out for mine

      • Gruntfuttock says:

Indeed, email said we’ve changed your seats. They omitted to say and your departure airport and times 😂. Luckily it all works 🙄

    • Genghis says:

Same for OPO for us next year. Will leave for as long as possible as a free option.

  • Doug says:

What’s the cheapest pre-departure covid test around London for a vaccinated couple traveling to Italy? I guess a lat flow rapid will do, just need a 72h before my next Sat flight

    • Harry T says:

Depends on the requirements of Italy regarding the type of test they want.

    • YC says:

Previous responses suggest chronomics/qured was fine for Italy

    • JDB says:

My wife and son used Qured a couple of weeks ago which worked fine. Note test to go to Italy is 48hrs ahead, not 72.

    • YC says:

However, if/when the UK joins the EU vaccine passport scheme, presumably pre-testing to Italy and other EU countries would also drop? Some news last week but have no seen any further murmurs recently. Anyone know the latest?

  • Josh says:

Haven’t touched beardie & ernie since the mass email. How’s the situation atm? My virgin card just renewed and want to get the upgrade voucher!

    • Travel Strong says:

the consistent advice is: try a small amount and see, could change any time. If a cash advance fee hits, it’ll hit instantly and you’ll know.

    • John says:

Suggest not doing it at all unless you want to share your finances with curve or don’t care if they kill your account

      • Paul says:

Have she confirmed that Curve are indeed swiftly killing since their email?

        • Paul says:

          ^* has anyone

          • Donna says:

Not good. I had a transaction (after maybe a 3 months break) and got a stern email from curve about suspected abuse and recycling. I don’t even withdraw the money from ernie so there is no recycling from my perspective.

    • Reney says:

Someone claimed on here that they did a transaction after the email and got swiftly shut down. Your choice as to whether you believe that. It is the only data point I have read to date.

    • Reney says:

      see page9/10/11/12 for update

  • Josh says:

Also, has anyone had issues receiving a referral bonus? I’ve referred 2x people via my platinum for the 24k and it’s been over a month with nothing updating. The bonus was on their side too.

    • Andy says:

I’ve noticed problems with receiving bonuses with adding supplementary cards to accounts and it does seem things are much slower than before. However a month is a major problem! Have you contacted Amex?

      • Josh says:

I have, they keep flogging me off with the “it can take up to 8-10 weeks”

However I know that 99% of the time, if it hasnt arrived in the last 4 weeks, there’s probably an issue. They just wont do anything more about it until I wait past that time 🙁

        • MinR says:

IN my experience, if the referrals don’t hit your account within 48/72 of a successful application, there’s an issue.
I missed out on two referrals – Amex eventually telling me the referral link wasn’t used after investigating.

When it happened the third time, I went mental! I was ready to cancel, but was offered the referral points after a manager intervened. Strangely, the manager asked me to take screen recordings of future referral applications just in case they don’t track 😐

    • Rich says:

2 applied yesterday, and points posted today.

Still waiting for a supp I added last week though.

  • Andrew says:

New LBG Community offers just popped up. 10% at Sainsbury’s (max £30) on BoS and 5% (max £30) on MBNA.

  • Anon says:

I am going to apply to VS for status match . I therefore need to book a economy ticket that i will cancel after i have been granted the status . Slightly concerned it could go pear shaped . I know i have to book a flexible ticket – U class by the look of it – are there any pitfalls i need to look out for ?
    Thank you .

    • Doug M says:

I’ll bite. Why do you want status when you’re not flying?

      • Anon says:

Because i am only red and if i want to use my companion voucher the companion ticket will cost me 57k points whereas if i am silver the second ticket will cost 0 points plus taxes .

  • Travel Strong says:

Eastern is pulling out of GIB after not much time at all. “Eastern Airways is cancelling flights from Gibraltar to Southampton as from the 11th of October, saying it has not seen a growth in demand for the route. It is also suspending flights to Birmingham from the 14th until spring next year.” Source GBC.gi

It’s not suprising when you can fly Easyjet from BRS for half the price. I really like flying Eastern but they want 260pp round trip at the best of times.
