The HfP chat thread – Wednesday 29th September

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

If you have a BA companion voucher which expires after September 23 (very possible) and you use it to make a booking, which you then need to cancel for a FTV, does the voucher then expire on 30/09/23? Yet another dilemma in these times of not being able to cancel online or get through to BA without a ridiculous wait!

    • JDB says:

I don’t think the underlying voucher expiry date changes at any point. While it is held within an FTV it is in ‘suspended animation’ but if, for whatever reason, it goes back into your account in the ordinary way, the voucher expiry date will prevail, so the voucher might have expired, have further validity and/or be valid beyond end Sep 2023.

Rob, no idea if you chose the adverts on site or if it’s via cookies but just got this alert in my chrome browser on my phone:

“This ad used too many resources for your device, so Chrome removed it.”

Just wanted to give you a heads-up because I’m guessing if lots of people get it, it might affect as revenue.

    Hello,

I currently have the free Virgin credit card but I am thinking of switching to paid version. Will I get the sign-up bonus? Any experience from fellow readers?

    Thank you

Morning all, has anyone had and manged to sort out problems with the Amex offer for Spend £200 at IHG and get £50. Mine didn’t track and Amex say the hotel wasn’t on the list (it was) and are refusing to do anything about it. I’m on attempt 4 to sort it but just keep getting the same response. Suggestions to sort it gratefully received !

    • TGLoyalty says:

You received this response on the phone from an agent in Brighton?

      • Jane says:

Brighton, somewhere overseas, and chat. expecting another call back today / tomorrow but getting no-where fast.

        • CH says:

I’ve had the same experience (but have been less persistent). Amex tried to tell me there were two Indigo hotels at the same address in the same city and I stayed at the wrong one!

    • K says:

I and my o/h have had to argue strongly for every offer since august, Morrisons, Hilton, IHG. Chat says that our offer wasn’t qualified. Brighton couldn’t even see the offers saved. In the end, chat has escalated it, after quite a heated exchange, and was resolved. A very painful process.

This was across 2 accounts, across many cards, so can’t even blame a particular card for being the problem

    • KJT says:

I am also waiting for a response. It was passed to a manager for action on Thursday . Nothing back yet. My OH got an e mail saying the offer was used two weeks ago. Used both our cards in France .

    • Richard says:

Had to chase for mine and did receive it. Two transactions in UK, HI and HIX, both were on the list. Sorted via chat.

    • John Gallagher says:

I’m having similar issues with the Annouska Amex offer. Been told one excuse after another as to why it didn’t qualify – all of which were incorrect

    • Barnaby100 says:

Used mine last Thursday and hasn’t tracked – is on the list- going to chase later

  • AG says:

Hey all, with Creation banning bendy, is there any issues (charges) with ATM withdrawals (on bendy) when linked to beardy/VS? or is this treated a purchase by VS.

    thanks

  • Robman says:

I’ve booked a week in Mauritius at the end of November, going there for the first time. Can anyone recommend hotel accommodation and best location to stay etc. I have a Hilton Diamond and Spire ambassador status with IHG. Would like a resort type of hotel, with some type of all-inclusive being a bonus. Any advice much appreciated.

    • Jill (Kinkell) says:

Well, there are a lot of very nice hotels and it’s not cheap! We prefer either the south coast , which is scenic. Stayed at Heritage Awali and Telfair and Lux LeMorne. For AI. Awali is probably best value. West coast is more sheltered. Oberoi is our ‘go to’ luxury. East coast can be windy, but lovely expansive beaches. Hilton and ICare on the west side. It’s a lovely island and we usually hire a car and get out and about. Driving is fine..just like U.K.

      • Robman says:

Awesome Jill, thanks for this advice. Have you stayed at either the Hilton or IC? I’ll check out the heritage awali.

        • Zara says:

We stayed at the Hilton and it was ok but not as great as I had anticipated – not quite sure I could put my finger on why but it missed the luxury wow feel. we also hopped to some other hotels as we were planning to split hotels across the stay. The four seasons was amazing, the lux in the south was also nice. We went about 4 years ago when our first child had just turned 1 so things may have changed since. There were a couple of others we stayed at but I can’t even remember now with baby brain!

        • Jill (Kinkell) says:

No….somehow didn’t fancy them! The last time we went we did 7 nights at Awali and then moved to 7 at The Oberoi. . Since retiring we’ve been on more active and exploring holidays. Mauritius was just the tonic for exhausted NHS workers!

    • Kevin C says:

The Beachcomber Shandrani has one of the best AI packages I’ve experienced. It’s very close to the airport. There weren’t many planes but you could almost touch the A380s as they went over.

  • Peter says:

BA (op QR) flight to Phuket cancelled – r automatically ebooked onto different flight but with QR flight number. Will that still qualify for double tier points?

    • SJ says:

Hi Peter, same situation. BA7011(QR842) and BA7003 (QR843) have been cancelled and QR978/979 reserved to/from HKT instead. Would have been 1120 TP (ie nearly Gold) but my understanding is double TP only on flights with a BA number. T&C states ‘British Airways flights including codeshares and British Airways marketed and/or operated flights only’.

Looking at QR website no other flight to HKT so presumably no BA codeshare available now.

Anyone know of other options for 1120TP BA Holiday options?

  • David says:

Does anyone have any idea what the BA household shutdown is REALLY about ?
