The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 28th September

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

If the antigen test doesn’t need to be done in person then go with Chronomics – £23.50. I used this to return from Greece and all worked fine.

  • Ming the Merciless says:

Morning Re Octopus energy. Anyone topped their account up above £5k?

  • Ming the Merciless says:

And another thing – Any points/discount angle on buying a Tesla.
Amex direct for the full balance? Top up and pay with revolt with a card of my choosing?

    • Rich says:

Are they still offering free supercharging if you get referred?

    • IanM says:

Don’t do it, get a proper car like a Polestar

    • Tom says:

The deposit can be done on Amex. Rest is bank transfer.
Dont buy an iPace or Polestar unless you want to turn up to broken chargers and ones being hogged by plug in hybrids. Superchargers are next level.

      • Andrew says:

        “Hogged by”…

Isn’t one of the problems the new regular “Chogging” events at P&R sites? (Every Thursday night according to the poster at Stirling p&r).

        • CarpalTravel says:

Just had to Google that. Not sure the Urban Dictionary is in line with whatever you are referring to!

      • TGLoyalty says:

There are plenty of fast chargers around.

        Check Zap Map.

      • Eoc says:

Again, people extrapolate their own experience to the general. Use Zap Map and lever turn up at a busy or broken charger.

    • BLT says:

Bought my original Model S with the offered Alphera finance (with guaranteed future value) and paid the monthly balance for 4 years by Amex. Changed if for a mode 3 last year and as it’s a company car paid via Amex Fx. Worth it for me. Otherwise Tesla don’t do discounts.

      • Memesweeper says:

        ^^^
        this

Buy with a deposit on Amex. Take the finance, and pay it off with a credit card. Alphera are no longer their partner AFAIK but they took Amex a few years ago.

        • Ming the Merciless says:

But which finance? I usually buy cars outright.

Looks like Blackhorse deal with hire purchase. Anyone got any experience paying them with Amex? And preferably paying off early.

  • Jaime says:

In the past I was able to add the name of a 2nd guest to an IHG booking on the web site, but can’t seem to find it as I am trying to add my daughters name to a points booking this coming weekend. Have they removed that option?

  • Super Secret Stuff says:

A side note about our trip to London over the weekend, I lost my voice watching Bring Me The Horizon at the O2. The Amex lounge is very nice and speak to Guest Services and show your Amex’s to get free passes. Definitely the cheapest place for drinks in the O2.

One of the disabled viewing areas is just in-front of the Amex Advantage seats. We were in the disabled viewing area and had a great views of both the stage and the crowd, which meant I saw a lot of people limping out of the crowd or being stretched off! Also one of the most orderly queues for the tube ever, no pushing or queue jumping. Rock crowds get a bad rep

  • Tazzy says:

Heading to Bordeaux for a long weekend with friends. Staying in an apartment. Any restaurant or activities suggestions?

  • idrive says:

Octopus discount: is the £50 off after referral (new client) applied immediately (ie. first bill) or per month over 12-24 months?

  • David S says:

Just had Nov flights to Portugal cancelled for third time in CE. Limited to Nov 4th or 12th but in between these dates, Economy flights are available on four separate dates. Put on a bigger plan please BA or release more CE rows of seats

    • Babyg says:

BA pull the curtain back half way down the plane it seems these, i usually book WT and i often get bumped from my exit row (row 12) because the curtain has been moved so far back, they should put on a widebody plane thou, we have one trip recently from FAO to LHR on a 777… that was a nice change.
