Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 28th September

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Lloyds just sent me an email saying “Good job, outgoings from your current account are 25% lower compared to the same period last month”. They’ll probably think that I’ve lost my job and I’m on the verge on bankruptcy now that Creation doesn’t allow Curve anymore!

  • AL says:

VS CC holders – is the awful app the only way to get access to transactions and statements? I hate having to do it to reconcile expenses. Can I get them to issue paper statements monthly by post or something archaic? Really is the bug bear of using that card for me.

    • Rich says:

As far as I know, yes. It’s a pain.

If you’re on an iPhone it’s easy to ping the statements over to your Mac via Air Drop, or email them etc.

      • David says:

Er, it’s also easy to do that on Android. Cab directly email, download to phone, upload to One/Google Drive, print and on and on

    • DarrenS says:

I have always got paper statements by post, even before they switched off the website. Android allows you share the statements with the option to email.

    • mark2 says:

Yes, you can get paper statements: apply online or by letter.
I agree that the app is abysmal; removing the online method was a major downgrade, but since it can no longer safely be used for MS it is moot.

Hi, I had a return booking on a 241 with 4 flights. All 4 flights have been cancelled and rebooked into flights that aren’t suitable. I amended the outbound online to a suitable option and asked them via Twitter to refund the return. They are saying that as I changed the outbound online then I have accepted the flights for the return so they are wanting to charge the cancellation fee. Doesn’t seem fair to me as it’s not clear online that I was accepting the new return flights by amending the outbound. Is it worth arguing?

    • Anna says:

I’m pretty sure some text pops up when you do this that says you are accepting the change and that no further amendments will be possible, etc, etc. A lot of people don’t read all that stuff, which can backfire later.
I’m actually surprised they are letting you cancel the return at all if it’s all one booking; I would have thought any change conditions would apply to the whole itinerary. Why are you cancelling the return leg on a 241 though, it’s a bit of a waste of the voucher?

Just won 2000 points on the Virgin Red recall game. People do win these!

  • Patrick Cold says:

On Sunday I moved a BA holiday from October to February. I have just received an email saying that my final payment is due tomorrow. Is this correct? Thanks.

    • ChrisC says:

No. The balance due date is still 3 weeks before departure.

If you only changed the dates on Sunday I’d assume the reminder to pay by tomorrow was already scheduled in the system and couldn’t be rescinded.

  • FrenchInLondon says:

Hi All… I have 29,600 Miles and More miles, a good chunk of which expiring on 1 October… As usual, I am dealing with the situation at the last minute… What would the readers recommend me to do? Not keen on the shopping option with a value of around .3p per mile !!! Thanks in advance

    • elguiri says:

If you had the M&M Card you should have got 1mile added to your account recently to extend it until end of year

      • FrenchInLondon says:

Hi elguiri, unfortunately I never had the card and they didn/t reissue one this summer ;-(

    • Rich says:

There was some talk a few days ago about making a redemption for far in the future, and then making changes to it.

I don’t know if there are fees for this; I’d be surprised if there weren’t.

    • Rob says:

There’s nothing better – Heathrow Rewards vouchers, gift cards, book a hotel … all as bad.

      • Lady London says:

Amazon if you use the UK site (offers vary by country and nothing stops you ordering off another country’s site)

      • Steve S says:

Can you credit a Best Western stay giving 500 miles to keep them alive?

    • Pid says:

I have about 1700 points and can not find anything to redeem for even gifting to charity. Have to let the expire I suppose.

  • John says:

Anyone else’s curve app not working?

  • Imran says:

Just received my Covid test to fly to India, but it doesn’t contain a “QR Code”. Will it be accepted by BA and Indian authorities?. Got it done from my local pharmacy and they are not too fancy about the QR codes.
